As much of a purist as I am for these old tractors, those Vanguards seem to be pretty stout engines. I rebuilt one and was impressed at how well-built and serviceable they are (aside from the starter mounting bolts). I think the few I've had bad experiences with just weren't maintained. Sounds like a great runner. That tractor is ready for another 30+ years of service! I'd be curious to see how it compares to the original Onan.

Yeah it was a tough choice to go this route instead of the rebuild, but I think in the long run I’ll be happy with it. As for comparisons, since the 318 still has its B43G, it’ll be nice to compare these two engines side by side, 18hp vs. 18hp.

Tell me about those starter mounting bolts. I noticed it on my 23 horse Vanguard that side of the starter motor vibrates a little bit against the engine. Is there a solution?

I did notice an issue with mine so I’ll have to check it out.

I see that you kept the original throttle knob... good show, as the kit provides a pathetic little knob... but how did you do that? I don't see any way to get the old one off.

I did use the old one. The knob will just pull off, it takes some effort but will come off. You have to do it anyway to get the old throttle out of the dash.

Please post a description of the kit you used. Model # perhaps?

There are four different kits and it depends on what engine your tractor originally had (B or P series Onan) and what hp replacement you want (18hp or 23hp). Your best best is to check out www.smallenginewarehouse.com and look at the options.
