Turning the Tide on Police Surveillance

- The stories seem non-stop. The NSA, FBI, and other federal agencies are spying on us in new ways and with new programs or authorities. But surveillance that is most overlooked, but is equally as pervasive, is how state and local police spy on their own residents. In Baltimore, the police department secretly deployed Stingrays to track the phone calls of residents in primarily black neighborhoods. In New Orleans, the police entered into a six-year contract with data mining firm Palantir to conduct predictive policing. When residents found out, their opposition was so fierce that within two weeks, the city canceled the agreement. And in cities and towns all over the country, police departments are tracking people’s movements with surreptitiously installed automatic license plate readers.
These examples are just a taste of the many ways police departments acquire and deploy surveillance technologies to constantly spy on average people as they go about their lives. And in most jurisdictions, including the District of Columbia, decisions to acquire and use these surveillance technologies are made by police departments without any knowledge or input from the public or elected officials, often through secret agreements with the federal government or private companies. This significantly threatens civil rights and civil liberties. Addressing these threats has gained additional urgency with the growing efforts of the Trump administration to identify and deport millions of undocumented immigrants, track Muslims, and even more aggressively police communities of color.
But cities and towns are starting to take control. In September of 2016, the ACLU and partners, including the Open Technology Institute, launched the Community Control Over Police Surveillance (C-COPS) effort. The purpose of C-COPS is to ensure that residents and lawmakers are empowered to decide if and how surveillance technology is acquired and used by local law enforcement agencies. To date, seven cities and counties in California, Washington, Tennessee, and Massachusetts have adopted C-COPS-style ordinances, and dozens of other jurisdictions are considering similar proposals. Join OTI and the ACLU of the District of Columbia for a discussion about why governing the use of surveillance technologies is critical to civil liberties and civil rights, and how grassroots efforts to pass these bills have been so effective.

Ask any family members who have a relative in law enforcement if they've been transformed into an unknown person like your little brother or sister who was close to you always asking about you and family how before that relative was kind humble and involved with family affairs but changed into a bully distanced and now rarely seen and now angry all the time at everyone, that's because in the academy they are bombarded with suspicion on everyone even their own parents, they are indoctrinated into a brotherhood of bullies promised a great and wonderfull future of freedom and a great retirement pension with the support of the government leadership always praised for doing as they've been told to do specially behind closed doors away from the public eye when they do dirty things for the leadership (new family) and given promotions after killing someone's family member with extra pay extra vacation perk endless medical leave and extra defence when dealings in criminal behaviors and permitted to do crime out of uniform, the leadership will make a new cops 100yrs old grandmother look like al cappone after 6 months in uniform and in class and in the department they are drenched with the reminders of loyalty to the blue and consequences of their own betrayal to the police culture (gang rules)

Surveillance is the result of irrational panic and is severely in violation of the right to privacy.

I have been under surveillance, cyber stalked and harassed for at least a year now after being bullied off a mobile gaming platform. I believe I have been targeted for my Palestinian heritage, my human rights activism, and my politics. My iPhone often shows the green indicator light that alerts when the camera is being accessed remotely, and this happens all the time when none of my apps are open. I have no sense of privacy and constantly feel deeply violated.

I am currently under 24/7 surveillance. Drones, many people, and vehicles. They’re everywhere I go, often before I get there, (obviously due to technological surveillance), and near my home at all times. I’m not crazy, paranoid, or delusional. Look up gang stalking and targeted individuals. This has been happening to me everyday for 6 weeks now. I’m no one! I’m a widowed single father who recently lost my job and home. I remember that number was low. 8 officers made that grade. 4 were horrible personalities. I dreaded to work around them. 2 were supervisors. I did not trust them. In my mind they were

They were the still fewer in number, but they seemed to easily climb the ladder, thus the supers were infected as well. It was 30 years of doing what the God of Heaven wanted me to be. I grew to be content with that, praying for change in men who were sworn to uphold. I hid my true feelings with God. He kept

Giving more power to a group (law inforcement) that already willfully disregard citizens rights and abuse their power, is crazy. There is no accountability for them. They investigate themselves for wrongdoing and unless there is fear of a public storm coming at them, problems are all too often swept under the rug and/or passed on to another county. @@biscaynebool6807 I've seen judges raise their voice and start yelling at a defendant and deny evidence showing a fraud upon the court all while knowing that she was also taking park in on that fraud [which was forged court room photos and exhibits] so as to conceal her involvement, the prosecutors involvement and the 7 different public defenders involvement who were suppose to be representing their client but were actually conspiring against him. i have seen the forged court room exhibits that were intended to lie to two different juries by placing a black fuzzy box over the area on the photos showing the police suffocating the Defendant who was then charged with assaulting the same two cops that were suffocating him at the time.
It is my experience that nearly all judges are this corrupted at the direction of the scumbags at the fbi and dept of justice!

I find it surprising that there is so much of a debate regarding the use of these technologies. The point of this conversation is to inform the public about the unregulated invasion of privacy that occurs when authorities use this technology. There are many valid uses for these technologies but they should be regulated and the public should be able to weigh in on the proper implementation.

So, when a potential client tells me they are being surveilled, I first interview them to find out why they are so incredibly important that a government entity or even a corporation, would spend Hundreds of thousands of dollars to surveil a person that has never once done anything important their entire life. 10 times out of 10, There is nothing there and the person claiming that they are being followed or watched, is simply paranoid or just extremely lonely.
I was a close family friend of the lieutenant at the local sheriff's office a few years ago where him and his brother ended up getting caught in a pedophile situation it was on the recording of the sheriff's office main phone as the mother found out they were messing with his teenage daughter. They got let go quietly and no one was charged however I knew about it and I became a very serious target. I was already at Target but at this point it was unbelievable. I can get into the details but you get it but it was past the scale of being a targeted individual. Just use your imagination on that I want to say this it's years later many years later and I am still recovering from getting hit in the back by one of my neighbors I don't get around well but when I go to the park or even go to the grocery store I have police City and ambulance fire department it's horrific I get Street Theater I get my neighbors are surveilling me 24 I can put that I carry growpro I can put that out there but they literally stay outside and in case and take turns that severe. I have the false report of arson the officer got fired in the city here right after all of this it's been continuous dog attacks local dogs. I've been subjected to this my entire life. People don't understand that this is the most pervasive and life long manipulation and destruction of your life. Today's technology only makes the suffering more extreme. I was born in 1966. I was abducted from my home in the middle of the night and later returned. No one woke up not even our dog's. I woke up in a car with people I didn't know, they drove me home wrapped up in a blanket and put me back in bed. I was 4 or 5 yrs old. I've since learned that they will run a hose into your house and gass everyone inside. This explains it. I don't know where they took me or what they did with me but I don't think that it was the only time it happened. And so it began and it only increases over time. The only reason for this is to destroy your life.

One of my family members fell last night and while we had to drive far for availability at a hospital I saw two police helicopters watching me - I am worried ans scared and they have the gall to add to my pain. Those LED have been installed here in Cleveland OH. They have a feature that is imo a cause of concern and that feature is a strobe light effect. Almost a mile of street lights simultaneously went strobe light mode. People driving on that road had to stop because it caused nausea, headaches and dizziness. I think, the police, the courts, and the legislature have done a bang up job in putting the fear of law enforcement into the minds of the free-est people on earth, in the free-est country on earth. They have obviously been working like madmen, all, without the use of all that new technology in spyware, and by goodness, these poor cops are obviously overworked, which could explain why they tend to always be in a hurry and generally in a bad mood. Idk, but it might take some of the pressure off the police if they were allowed to use all this stuff, and it might even save Americans money, imagine, getting pulled over, and they never asked for a driver's license, they just knew who you were, and so much more, like whether you own firearms, imagine how much safer they would feel just in the scenario of the traffic stop. By golly that's impressive, and proves my point, that this group of people, whom we truly trust as the most upstanding, honest, law abiding people on earth, without a mark of shame, or sin, have been working night and day, diligently since the 1970's war on drugs was declared, and, basically, without the use of technology, the police, courts and legislative branch, have managed to find so many criminals in the free-est country, just goes to show, how hard at work they've been. But, now imagine, how much safer the law abiding citizen would be if say, we gave them all the tech they wanted, making their jobs easier, less stressful, we wouldn't be so scared of getting shot by the side of the road, And, I betcha, by golly, they could improve their already impressive 25% of the people in prison, oh, to somewhere in the high seventy percentile of Americans in prison! I think that each member of that panel, all members of Homeland security and others involved, along with each employee of 18,000 police departments should all get a street light with camera and voice activated placed at each one of their homes for one year. If you are me and had to live my daily life of helicopters over my head when I try to go to the park or police at the grocery store I'm a little old lady 62 years old that walks with a walker most of the time and they have to follow me around by the droves or send people to my neighbors to surveil me 24/7 I've never committed a crime however they set me up a million times and even got caught. I found them with a false report of our stand behind my back and I got the officer fired for it. I was delivering a court document they lied right in the paperwork saying it was a personal letter malicious and vicious like I was harassing this woman. When clearly I went to the court it was stamped and it was instructed to serve the document to the person no one was home I posted on the door and somehow a fictitious fire existed. Of course they do, because people lie to them all the time, 24/7. Because they're cops. They're not surprised by the truth, especially if it's bad or wrong, but they are unaccustomed to people telling the truth, especially if it isn't bad or wrong. They won't believe it. They seem to have no reason or desire to. In fact, unless the truth IS connected to someone's wrongdoing or is terrible in some way, they seem to find it frivolous and rather unnecessary, a waste of their time. How would the truth even matter to these folks when they prefer to think you're a liar? Even though they've only just met you and there's no proof of that. The only time the truth affects them is when they find it's exactly what you told them.
And weirdly...that seems to annoy them. Not always, and they cover it well, but often. TOO often, really. Might be the only thing that just shocks the hell out of them. They certainly don't like that.

First of all, check your states law regarding surveillance by law enforcement. Then just know that if they want, most states allow any publicly transmitted data to be considered not private.
