Others then twelve Apostles in the Bible
13th apostle-Matthias
Let us see the names of some other apostles along with the twelve. Matthias may be referred to as the thirteenth apostle. He took the place Judas forfeited.
14th apostle-James
Three years after his encounter with the Lord, Paul went to Jerusalem. He wrote to the Galatians that there he met no other apostle except James, the brother of the Lord (Gal.1:19). According to this, the church had acknowledged James as one of the apostles. After His resurrection, Jesus appeared to His brother James and commissioned him with an apostolic ministry (1.Cor. 15:7). The personal appearance of Jesus is one of the hallmarks of an apostolic calling (1.Cor.9:1).
15th apostle-Barnabas
The Bible refers to Barnabas as one of the apostles. He was one of those who sold all their earthly possessions and laid the proceeds at the feet of the apostle. He was a young man who was of much solace to all the apostles. He had the special grace to strengthen and uplift the others. He was a prophet in the Antioch church. The Holy Spirit had asked him to be set apart for the apostolic ministry. Thereafter, he was referred to as apostle Barnabas (Ac.14:14).
16th apostle-Paul
Who does not know Paul as an apostle? Some argue that Paul would have been selected in the place of Matthias if Peter had not acted hastily to select Matthias. Yet the Bible has no evidence to support this theory.
About eleven years after Matthias received his calling as an apostle, Paul was called into the apostolic ministry. For about ten years, Paul was in the church of Antioch as a prophet and teacher. We don't find in the Bible another person who is as exemplary as Paul for the apostolic ministry. He gives the list of his apostolic evidence in his writings (1.Cor.9).
Yet he never got over the feeling that he had been a persecu tor of the Church and that he had no credentials for such high office. In all humility, he said, "For I am the least of the apos tles, who am not worthy to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God" (1.Cor. 15:9).
Yet, the characteristics and signs of an apostle were much evident in his life. Therefore, he said boldly, "...for in nothing was I behind the most eminent apostles, though I am nothing" (2.Cor.12:11).
In several places, the Bible calls Paul and Barnabas apos tles. Paul never hesitated to call himself as an apostle of Jesus Christ (Rom.1:1; 1.Cor.1:1; 2.Cor.1:1; Eph.1:1; Col.1:1; 1.Tim. 1:1;2.Tim 1:1; Gal.1:1).
Paul considered his apostolic calling not only a great privilege but also a great responsibility. He counted everything else as rubbish in order to gain Christ and fulfill his apostolic calling (Phil3:8). He forfeited even the little comforts and facilities the other apostles enjoyed. He poured himself out as drink offering in the apostolic ministry. He gave up everything even to the point of dying as a martyr. What a price to pay to be an apostle!
17th apostle-Apollos
Paul called the Bible scholar Apollos an apostle (1.Cor.4:6,9). Referring to Apollos and himself, he said, "For! think that God has displayed us, the apostles, last..." Apollos was also a distinguished apostle. All these apostles had been commissioned by God to unite the church; but the believers, led by their flesh, sought to identify either with Paul or with Apollos. Paul condemns such divisive attitudes. He calls apostles as 'God's fellow workers' (1.Cor.3:9).
18th apostle-Silas
Silas was a prophet. The elders in the Jerusalem church sent him along with Paul. He became a missionary with Paul and was henceforth called an apostle (1.Thes. 1:1:2:6).
19th apostle-Timothy
God called Timothy, Paul's helper, to be an apostle. This is the reward God gives to those who are faithful in little things. He carried the mature apostolic anointing upon him even as a youth. Maybe he received the anointing of the apostle Paul as his beloved son (Ac. 19:22; 1.Thes. 1:1;2:6).
20th apostle-Titus
Titus, Paul's true son in their common faith, was also an apostle. Paul left him in Crete to straighten out what was left unfinished and appoint elders in every town. Paul calls him an ambassador (representative messenger) of the church. The Greek equivalent for 'ambassador' is apostle. After all, an apostle is indeed an ambassador (Tit. 1:1,5;2.Cor.8:23).
21st apostle - Epaphroditus
For the work of Christ, Epaphroditus came near to death, not regarding his life. Paul introduced him as ambassador which means apostle. This champion dared to risk his life for his apostolic calling (Phil.2:25).
22nd &23rd- apostles Andronicus and Junia
These two were relatives of Paul. They had become Chris tians even before Paul and were fellow prisoners with Paul. Paul commended them as outstanding among the apostles (Rom.16:7).
