    I got into the hobby through watching old Dice Tower videos. I've learned the hard way that if Sam Healey likes a game, and if he's the only one, it's a bad game and Sam likes it for the theme, and it's also likely horribly "basic". Pillars of the Earth is a Sam Healey game.

      Tom really likes Pillars of the Earth too. Btw this game really shines with the expansion which they didn’t reprint

    I would love to see a 2nd edition of Pillars of the Earth. I think the core of it is great, but as you said, it has aged some. Would be curious to see what a 2E would bring.

    Ra -the pieces look really nice, but I'm glad I've not had to pay for that version!

    Majesty was reimplemented by Middle Ages, exchange it for the new one, it's better :)

      It’s coming out from Hachette this UKGE. The drafting mechanic has been changed to be more like the kingdomino drafting, but still similar games.

      I was going to say that Majesty 2.0 launches at UKGE with a different drafting mechanism and other tweaks. Having said that we enjoy the original as a quick, easy teach filler.

    For Ra, you can have two bags, or lay the tiles upside down around the board. Ra has in my opinion the best implementation of auctions.

    • @TheBrokenMeeple
      @TheBrokenMeeple  4 месяца назад

      That's a LOT of tiles to get out of the bag and lay upside down though.

    I like Power grid, which I own along with an alternate set of powerplants, and Nidavellir, which I do not own, better than Ra.

    I have never played Pandemic Iberia, though I really like Fall of Rome.
    It's so thematic to place your legion and castels at strategic positions and the movement paths of the Migration of Peoples.
    Also the abilities of the characters and the action cards add theme to the game.
    I dont even dislike rolling dice in combat....I would say I even prefer this approach.

    Fall of Rome killed Iberia for me. Its like a tower defense version of Pandemic. I love the idea of leaving legions behind. It similar to placing purified water in Iberia but you dont have to discard. The dice are an exciting addition for removing cubes and the "treasury" in solo mode is excellent.

    Pillars of the Earth is totally still in print and is often available for $20, its still considered to be great, it was the game that invented worker placement after all. The problem is that there are design issues that are fixed with expansion. And expansion is out of print. Its a chicken and an egg, publisher said theyll put out expansion into print if base game sells well. but people arent buying base game because most recommend only to get it with expansion.

    • @ElGrandoCaymano
      @ElGrandoCaymano 4 месяца назад

      I agree with all you said except it was probably Caylus, Stone Age or maybe Aladdin's Dragons which first used worker placement. Both Pillars and Agricola came out at the same time, but I think only in German originally, so if not Caylus, it might have been Stone Age first out in English.

    Nice episode Luke. But oh nooo! You sold Carcassonne -- what a crime. Lol! Isle of Skye looks like Carcassonne; even the rulebook you are showing has the same layout as Carc-rulebooks. Carcassonne (with all expansions) is still in my top-10 with many medium to heavy games. Carc is still supported and just came out with a few polyomino tiles, it is also better that Catan INHO. I would like to try Isle of Skye though. Pillars of the Earth is a phantastic book (of a "Trilogy" with now 5 brilliant books). The first are made into 2 different miniseries. Always wanted to get my hands on this game! Now my daughter got the German edition at a market recently; guess what I will be doing on my next overseas visit back home this July!

      Isle of Skye is a pricing game first and foremost. Definitely a forever game for me. Its physical similarity to Carcassonne is misleading. You have a private island, nobody is fighting for control of roads, cities, fields. The challenge is buying your opponents' tiles for sale and correctly pricing your own. Pricing allocates your cash at hand- if you put all your money down pricing your tiles, you will have none to buy your opponents' tiles with unless you make a sale. If nobody buys your tile, you buy it with the money you used to price it.

    • @TheBrokenMeeple
      @TheBrokenMeeple  4 месяца назад

      I have Isle of Skye and Small Islands, both beat out Carcassonne.
      I disagree that it's not a physically similar game to Carcassone. The pricing element is certainly new, but you still have considerations of how to build the little map and where you place tiles has importance, but instead of 4 fixed rules the whole game, you have a variable amount of scoring rules that can apply.

    I dont like about RA that a lot of times the auction is not about the actual tile(s) but about the coin value you get as exchange.
    This absolutely ruined my feeling a good auction game should create. You are limited by the coin values you have.
    I much prefer an auction in which you can freely offer up to what you have (until one player is left) or in which everybody puts the offer in closed hand and reveals at the same time (e.g. Spartacus).
