McCartney brings out beautiful tunes from his socerer's hat and decorate them with delicate textures and touches from his magic wand. A genious who chears up the world to whom we can only say thanks.
What a great analysis, Amy - you really added to my own impressions of this, one of my (many) favorite Beatles’ songs! I always had the sense of this being a rather vaudevillian-type song, an old-style feel brought completely up to date. The harpsicord harking back to an earlier, more prim and proper time, Ringo’s sticks imagining the start of a soft-shoe dance, and then Paul’s bright announcement of repair and renewal. You completely opened my eyes with your analysis of the lines “And it really doesn’t matter, etc.” Just as Beethoven’s Third Symphony exploded the former rules of the symphony and Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring caused outrage at its opening, Paul announces his intention to go where his muse leads, regardless of what may have previously been considered commercial music. I now read those lyrics in the context of a declaration: “If I’m wrong (in a commercial sense) I’m right where I belong.” Followed by a reassertion: “I’m right where I belong”. It makes me think of the great Groucho Marx’s (talk about vaudevillian) line: “I refuse to join any club that would have me as a member”. The Beatles left the “pop music” club: they entered legend. Loving your exploration, Amy - enjoy
A song from youth ... now a personal space song? A song which opened and explored the possibilities of it all ... contemplation, wondering, thinking, planning, imagining, dreaming ... the musing! The tone, the instrumentation, the feeling, a place we all need to go to ... :)
I've always interpreted the gentle quality as being psychedelic. For me, it produces an atmosphere that conveys its psychedelic elements to the listener
Always thought of the harpsichord intro as the raindrops falling through the hole and hitting the bucket :) very mindful song for me, about knowing deep inside who you are and what you’re doing with your life, very in character for Paul, I think
Here was me thinking this track was a minor one on the album. You have revealed much more! Regards George's guitar, it is said that he played with treble- heavy settings on his Stratocaster, double tracked.
Christmas came early and I managed to see Paul playing in Madrid. Set list:- 1. A Hard Day's Night 2. Junior's Farm (Wings song) 3. Letting Go (Wings song) 4. Drive My Car 5. Got to Get You Into My Life 6. Come On to Me (Wings song I think) 7. Let Me Roll It (Wings song) (with "Foxy Lady" by The Jimi Hendrix Experience coda) 8. Getting Better 9. Let 'Em In (Wings song) 10. My Valentine (dedicated to Nancy Shevell) Not sure provenance of song 11. Nineteen Hundred and Eighty-Five (Wings song) 12. Maybe I'm Amazed (Wings song) 13. I've Just Seen a Face 14. In Spite of All the Danger (The Quarrymen song) 15. Love Me Do 16. Dance Tonight (Wings song) 17. Blackbird 18. Here Today (dedicated to John Lennon) 19. Now and Then 20. Lady Madonna 21. Jet (Wings song) 22. Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite! 23. Something (dedicated to George Harrison) 24. Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da 25. Band on the Run (Wings song) 26. Get Back 27. Let It Be 28. Live and Let Die (Wings song) 29. Hey Jude 30. Encore: 31. I've Got a Feeling 32. Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (Reprise) 33. Helter Skelter 34. Golden Slumbers 35. Carry That Weight 36. The End
This song really does make me look around my gaff and realise with shock what a hole it is! Then my mind starts wandering where're it'll go and it doesn't bother me anymore. Thank you , you loveable mopheads. And Amy of course
❤ I'm happy to watch this reaction 😊👌 So funny that you get the inspiration that you are in your studio sitting in a fixed hole 😂 I love how you explain the decending line in this one chord (I think it's F minor 7). It would really miss something without it. Looking forward to watching the next reaction to a Sgt Pepper's song now 🤞😊
The harpsichord reminds me of The Addams Family with Lurch playing the instrument. If GM would have put Strawberry Fields and Penny Lane on the album, the two song I would have deleted would have been Getting Better and Good Morning Good Morning. Can't wait for your reactions to the rest of Sgt. Pepper.
This is a great song. I always liked this one. The intro could be the intro to Benefit of Mr. Kite. Playful, carnival like, but then it goes in a different direction. It has a slow tempo, allowing the instruments to have their own space. They may have added more echo because it sounds like they're in a huge hall. They say Lennon played bass on this one. This is a great bass line, but it sounds so McCartney. Maybe he showed John what to play? Well, maybe not.... Just the way the guitar fills come in, very deliberate, perfectly placed. Like the part you played on the harp. Spot on. Mal Evans, their roadie, helped Paul with some of the lyrics, and received royalties, but Paul was like, you know Mal, we can't credit you being part song writer. Lennon/ McCartney/ Evans doesn't really work. Yeah, and try to run that idea by Lennon. Hey Amy, you could probably play a bit more of the Beatle songs in your videos. There's another youtuber, "Call Me Caroline", who did the same thing a few years ago, and she would play much more of the Beatles songs, and her videos are still up. Maybe, check out one of her videos and see how she did it. Don't get hung up on the first listen thing. It doesn't bother me if you were to listen to a song two or three times before sharing your thoughts. Some songs grow on you. Thanks for another upbeat review, and a growing appreciation for the Beatles. As a reminder, throw in Karen Carpenter, you'll be very impressed with this woman's voice.
Can't wait til Amy gets to "Wild Honey Pie" or "Dig It". 😉 But here is yet another tasty slice of bouncy McCartney Brit-pop. This is one of those 'Sgt Peppers' songs that wasn't as famous as "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" or "With a Little Help From My Friends", but when you hear it for the first time, holy cow does it grab you. There's just so much charisma to this tune. It verges into Broadway show tune quality IMO, which I mean as a compliment. That guitar feature is basically the same as the one in "Nowhere Man".
You need to do things in the right order, as per the song: 1) fix the hole where the rain gets in 2) fill in the crack in the door, *then* 3) you can get your brushes out and paint the room. Works every time.
I can't imagine why you don't like it? It has always been my favourite song on the album right from the first listen back in 1967. Eventually "Within You, Without You" become my other favourite on the album. I mentioned that because I've noticed a lot of young people saying those two songs are their least favourite on the album which I find unfathomable.
McCartney brings out beautiful tunes from his socerer's hat and decorate them with delicate textures and touches from his magic wand. A genious who chears up the world to whom we can only say thanks.
genious
In 1963 we had Please please me the first album, fast forward just 4 years and we have Pepper, what a progression.
Definitely an underrated track. I love the way that George's guitar interacts with Paul's vocals.
What a great analysis, Amy - you really added to my own impressions of this, one of my (many) favorite Beatles’ songs!

Once again, another wonderful interpretation. Thank you 😊
My favorite Beatles guitar solo
Played by George and not Paul as some think.
Wow, thank you, looks like Amy is reacting to the whole album, nice!
Yes, she said she would do that 👌😃
Amy's voice is beautifully clean thanks Vlad your the bomb !! 😉
who left the coughing in the edit @ 4:14? fix those holes, vlad! :P

Words are flowing out like endless rain into a paper cup.
Fixing a hole in the ocean
@@ifandwhen-kl2cr And though the holes were rather small. They had to count them all.
Across the Universe.
This and A Day in the Life are the best tracks of the album.

Fixing a hole reminds me of instruments that fix holes. Clarinet, flute, oboe, bassoon, sax, recorder.
QUEEN: MARCH OF THE BLACK QUEEN

Lovely Rita and Good Morning
When you mentioned a song about being active and working I immediately thought of the folk song about John Henry driving railroad spikes. 🤣⚒️
Love the sound of the harpsichord; it’s dated, but it’s so RAW!
Yet another dose of Brian Wilson harpsichord

😂❤...both is not enough ❤😂
So far who would you say were the best songwriter/musicians you have listened to
Paint won't fix a hole.
Yeah it will, but you do need a little duct tape.
You need to do things in the right order, as per the song: 1) fix the hole where the rain gets in 2) fill in the crack in the door, *then* 3) you can get your brushes out and paint the room. Works every time.
I hope he wasn’t using water based paint to fix a hole where the rain gets in. It would be really ineffective and messy
What about the rest of the lyrics?
Can you react to sen ağlama by sezen aksu?
Scarlattish...maybe???
My least favorite song in my favorite Beatles album…
Why is that? Not being rude just wondering. It's one of my favorites from the album and I see quite a few people don't enjoy it that much.
I can't imagine why you don't like it?
