      True. It's "Spieglein Spieglein an der Wand." in German. Maybe that's why I thought the English version would be mirror mirror too in the movie ^^. Strange. Also "Spieglein" is technically a little mirror while "Spiegel" is a normal one.

    • @Games_and_Music
      @Games_and_Music 7 лет назад +14

      Yeah i grew up with the Dutch version of it, which is similar to the German one, "spiegeltje spiegeltje aan de wand, wie is het mooiste van het land?", "spiegeltje" also means (like in the German version) a smaller mirror, but "wand" means wall, so it was probably to rhyme with "land". Because its a bit odd to hang a small mirror on the wall, but eh, its not like its all based in reality anyway :P
      But yeah in this case, it is Disney who changed it, "Mirror mirror" is the original.

    My theory is that through the years we've heard these line misquoted by commercials, tv shows and other movies that purposely misquoted them to give better context to what they were referencing. I don't think the average person just started accidentally misquoting famous lines and it spread like wildfire. I think we just accepted that these must be the actual lines because we didn't think a commercial, tv show or movie would get it wrong.

      Christopher Craig There's a version of the film that was recorded in 1980 in the actual theater, it was to show people's reactions to the reveal. That clip did include the line, "No, Luke, I am your father." However, the word 'Luke' is edited in, it was sampled from a previous line and plastered onto the final take. Lucas probably just cleaned it up for the remasters.

    Its really great how a lot of these quotes also came to be iconic misquoted phrases in German. So maybe its less the words themself that cause all the misquoting, but rather the meaning and impact of a dedicated scene, that make people form simple, yet impressive versions of the original to keep in mind.

    It seems to me that it's easier to remember the scene rather than the actual lines and the words are only a way to reimagine that scene in our heads.
    I mean some of these misquotes have the names of the characters in them so that we can communicate the scene better in words. If we just said "I am your father", the context of the scene is lost despite it being incorrect.

      All the people mentioning the German translation are really missing the obvious reason of English just sucking as a language. We have no qualms slapping the same syllable back to back in a sentence and then wonder why the language has odd quirks.
      "Interview With the Vampire -> "Interview Withthe Vampire -> "Interview With-e Vampire" -> "Interview With a Vampire"
      That change is so obvious it's astonishing that he didn't mention it in the video. It's just the TH sound running together and the leftover E picking up the A sound.
