Nearly everyone seems to have moved to the Swiss side because the headquarters are in Basel and the taxation on the airport is done due a treaty specially for the airport. AFAIK only Air France ands its low cost carrier HOP! uses the French side. The two restaurants you showed are not bad, and 1/3 to 1/4 the price of the ones on the "Swiss" side - but again it is a treaty with an exclusive road between fences in France to link that "Swiss side" to mainland Switzerland.
We will end our Viking River Cruise in Basel and fly home to the U.S. from there. Is BSL the only airport? When I pull it up on American Airlines it gives 2 choices.
The passport control is not separated, but you have separate exits. When it comes to passport check, you have points for EU and for all other passports, that's all.
What might be confusing there is that Switzerland is a Schengen Zone member but not a EU member. So, because of Schengen, there's freedom of movement for people between France and Switzerland, but there are still checks for the goods, because you're entering or leaving the EU. In other words, when switching between France (or Germany) and Switzerland there are no border checks for people, but there are customs checks for goods.
Rotten airport. Inadequate signage, insufficient seating, apathetic staff. And security who make their own rules up (since when has chocolate been a liquid)?

The nearest is Zurich (1:15 by train from Basel SBB), which offers flights to the US.
Our Basel airport experience was a nightmare and will never fly out of there again. If given the choice, always choose Zurich! @@ziadmamlouk

Do they enforce this BSL-invented rule of 'chocolate suddenly being a liquid' frequently? And does that even include perfectly solid chocolate bars?
