  • Vienna (pronunciation [viːn]) Listen to(i)/? is the capital of the Republic of Austria and at the same time one of the nine Austrian provinces. With more than 2 million inhabitants (October 2023)[10][4] - just over a fifth of Austria's total population - Vienna, located on the Danube, is the most populous city and primate city in Austria as well as the second largest city in the German-speaking world and Central Europe. It is the fifth largest city in the European Union and the tenth largest city in Europe. Around 3 million people live in the greater Vienna area - this corresponds to around one third of the total Austrian population.
Architecturally, Vienna is still characterized by the buildings around Vienna's Ringstrasse from the Wilhelminian period, but also by Baroque and Art Nouveau (Viennese Modernism and Vienna Secession Style). Through its role as the imperial capital and residence of the Austrian Empire from 1804 onwards, Vienna became a cultural and political centre of Europe. Around 1910, when Vienna was still the capital of the Habsburg Monarchy, the city had over two million inhabitants. [11] The historic centre of Vienna and Schönbrunn Palace are now UNESCO World Heritage Sites. With around 7.5 million tourists and around 16.5 million overnight stays every year, Vienna is one of the most visited cities in Europe. [12]
As early as the Congress of Vienna in 1814/15, the city played an important role in international diplomacy, which it has maintained to the present day. As an international congress and conference venue, Vienna is now the seat of over 40 international organizations,[13] including the oil cartel OPEC, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the OSCE, making it one of the world's cities. [14][15] The United Nations Office in Vienna (UNOV) is housed in the Vienna International Centre (VIC), one of the four official headquarters of the United Nations, popularly known as the UN City. Vienna is a large city with a very high quality of life[16] and a high GDP per capita, but it is also one of the most expensive cities in the world. [17]
