  • In this second of three videos on how to sing harmony, I'm going to give you some tips on how to sing three-part harmonies. I'll be focusing mainly on Country music and the song I'm using as an example is "Cool Water", famous by the voices of Marty Robbins and The Sons Of The Pioneers.

Thanks for this wonderful tutorial on 3 part harmony. My question is what to do with a passing note. For example, here is a melodic phrase C D E, C chord goes with it. D is the passing note. I can put a G under D so it won't clash with it. C and E would clash with it. But that's just two voices. Thanks

Hey there! Thanks for the kind words. If I got your question right, yes, you can put that G under the D. The G over the D melody will show the dominant chord.

Thank you Cesar. One thing that confuses me is when the melody sings a note which is not in the backing chord. Do the other voices follow to make a triad, even if this is a different chord than is being played?

Hey Tony, thanks for your question! It depends, sometimes only one of the voices may change to create tension. Or sometimes all of them can change slightly off the chord and come back for the same reason. I'm not sure if that answers your question, but if you have an example of what you're saying, I'll be happy to listen and get back to you on that. All the best!
