This show and “upping the ante” are 2 of my must watch shows each week between Nov and March each NH season, informative, relaxed and light humoured but spades of professional insight. Keep up the great work 👍👍👍

No wonder Ruby was a brilliant jockey, his read of a horse is spot on. Love your programme 😊

I think people are often OTT in their condemnation of Nicky, but on this occasion I have to agree with some of the jibes. It cannot be a coincidence that yard seems to have such an issue keeping the real good ones fit. There is such a thing as being too precious with a horse and I think there lies the problem at Seven Barrows. It’s why we rarely see his stars progress over hurdles onto becoming chasers in the Gold cup sphere, they’re just not hardy enough. For Nicky Henderson to have only two gold cups to his name given what’s come through the door is quite eye opening.

Great episode, did have a laugh at Ruby talking about Burdett Road and people comparing every Greatwood winner to Rooster Booster. Just to indulge how good Rooster Booster was that season he won a Greatwood off 155 by 11l nudge out from the last. There where only three hurdlers rated 155+ in the 2m division at the end of last season. Speaking off him would love to see State Man try and match his 2nd in the tote golf trophy off 166 probably the greatest weight carrying hurdle performance this century a shame we don't get this generations giving the biggest handicaps a go

You can’t minimise the risk of horses having a heart attack. Yet again pandering to the people who hate horse racing

It's pretty tiresome the narrative around pandering to people who hate racing, same goes when at attempts are made to make things safer (i.e. the GN) .
As someone that loves NH racing, i'd say it's pretty worthwhile trying to reduce the risk and of course you can reduce it. I accept you cant eliminate it. I'm happy people are trying make a difference whether monty thinks it's worthwhile or not.

I agree with most of what Ruby and Lydia on the Ahoy Senor ride, however, Lydia can’t just say “he probably would have won had he gone earlier” and not say the jockey should be given a ban for not riding out for his maximum position.
The horse is a “bit of clutz” isn’t really a defence when you watch that race back. Young lads get given bans in class 5’s round Carlisle. The rules don’t change round Aintree on a Saturday.

One for the show folks. Why are suggested changes to the Mares’ races at Cheltenham often regarded as an attack of National Hunt mares. Can one not be mutually a supporter of the advancement of National Hunt mares whilst also seeing the bigger picture that the mares' races at the Cheltenham Festival have a negative impact on the competitiveness of the meeting.
Changing the Mares' Hurdle back to a Grade 2 with Grade 1 penalties should have been considered as it may have resulted or encouraged elite mares to run in the open-class championship races.

Please could you ask Ruby his thoughts on GDS after the John Durken? I believe he ran the best race & should still be Favourite for the GC.

    Lydia, Ruby,
Hopefully this is a worthy contribution. Valgrand is going for the Cheltenham County Hurdle no? He is making his 5th 'run' on the 30th so will qualify. I have him backed for this haha so I hope Im right. Let me know your thoughts? Thanks

Do you think they have ruined the cross country race ? Half the field ran out the handicap and surely this should have max rating to enter to avoid this.

    • @madforit2
      @madforit2 7 дней назад +3

I'd rather see the cross country left alone. If there are 3/4 former greats running against each other makes a better watch and betting heat than a handicap personally

Dont go telling me Burdett Road has any chance in the Champion Hurdle,i agree completely with what Gavin Lynch stated earlier on in the week which is he should be 80/1 for a Champion Hurdle not 50/1.

Aidann Obrien had eyebrows raised when he said Troys heart rate was up in the 2000 gns. Heart monitors on horses. Looks like he was ahead of the game as usual. If used in training could spot a problem before they raced. U can never make racing 100% safe nothing is

Why are trainers and pundits sponsored by Bookmakers? This programme for instance is sponsored by Paddy Power, as Ruby works in the Mullins camp Paddy Power wouldn't want to be losing money on his input. Nicky Henderson is also sponsored, it was noticeable that the betting exchanges on Constitution Hill were affected before the announcement of his lameness. Footballers cannot bet on football matches, trainers and their staff should receive no money from Bookmakers. It leads to all manners of skulduggery.

Willie Mullins would have won the last two Melbourne cups with constitution hill, c'mon we all know it, Henderson just looks for excuses not to run the horse or better still scratch the horse off for yet another season.

My thoughts on the Constitution Hill gallop, look if he needed the gallop badly and is not near where you would want him at this stage for a Fighting Fifth Hurdle just come out and say it Nicky and Nico.Every grown up could see the look of glumness or disappointment written all over your faces after the gallop and no doubt you had hoped he would look better than that even with his extended lay off,but dont sugar coat it because lots of us over the years have seen 3 mile chases come back after a race looking less shattered than Constitution Hill did.All i hope now is that come Monday we hear Constitution Hill is fit enough and well enough to run in the Fighting Fifth Hurdle or hes not where we want him to be just yet fitness wise and we will wait until the Christmas Hurdle.I dont think anyone wants to see a Constitution Hill not able to do himself justice a week on Saturday if hes not fully fit and ready.

If Nicky/Nico had said before the gallop this would be the case, would we be questioning it? Our lack of knowledge/understanding means why we think it looked bad, it may well have exactly what the doctor ordered.

I have watched racing for 50 years and your not going to beable to do anything about a lot of deaths of horses, its very much like human beings iam affraid if you have a heart attack some will survive and some will not.Lets not kid ourselves they are race horses and we ask them to run to there maximum and have jockeys onboard them asking them for there all in a finish there not pets.
