  • There was about 15-20 cm of new snowfall with strong winds, during the early hours, and this bike path (like many others) was being cleared of new snow for the fifth time already on that day. At 08:54 am! This contractor is Oulun Konetyö, they're doing amazing work!

    OMG. Your bike paths are wide enough to drive a tractor down. Scotland is soooo far behind...

      Also this is one of the narrower ones. We need compatible infrastructure and machinery, otherwise the maintenance cannot be efficient.

      Shared with pedestrians (not too busy for that) and at the same time compatible with regular maintenance equipment. Can imagine it depends on many factor which is the optimum configuration.

    What is that on the back of the machine? A snow blower? Surface texturizer? I didn’t see it working in this video but I have in some of your other videos.

      Yes, a snow blower/thrower. Kinda works also as a surface improver, as it eliminates tire marks and also cleans any snow rolled down from the side banks. And by using either or and the front blade and the blower the driver can control where to push and put the snow. For example to not block crossing paths, as with the thrower you can collect snow for a short moment and then unload later.

    How did you mount your camera on the bike to make it looks so smooth? Or what kind of camera did you use? Here in Canada, I could not get such smooth video in the winter with my setup. Thanks in advance!

      It's a smooth surface, and I'm using a gimbal too.

    Hello - What is the temperature ? Thanks !

      @PekkaTahkola  3 года назад +3

      This day it was about -10°C and lots of wind. It can be anything between, say, +5 and -35, usually around -5 to -20 this time of the year.

    Hello isn’t this too expensive? Plowing the same path for 10 times a day?

    • @PekkaTahkola
      @PekkaTahkola  3 года назад +8

      We've never really had conditions where 10 times per day would be needed, and even this 5 times in a day is quite rare. Anyway, winter maintenance costs of bicycle and walking infra is peanuts compared to what is used for motor traffic.

      @@PekkaTahkola And who are those who pay for both? It’s the motorists who need cars to get to work. Those riding bicycles don’t pay anything.

      @@auvomesilampi6325 Bullshit. Cycle path maintenance budget is paid from municipal taxes, just like street maintenance. Everyone pays tax, not just drivers, even though car people want to believe so.
      And Oulu spends over 10 times more money on street maintenance than on cycle path maintenance.
