STORYLINE:
Thirteen of the 15 officers and men of the Philippine Marine Corps who were killed in an encounter with muslim rebels last week were given a heroes memorial at the Marine headquarters in Manila on Tuesday.
Philippine Marine spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Ariel Caculitan said that the loss of the officers will not affect the Marine Corps ongoing operations.
"We are sad about the loss of these 15 officers and men," he said.
"But this does not mean we are not continuing this fight against these lawless elements because the Philippine Marine Corps is a frontliner in the defence and security of our nation," he added.
The marines were killed when their unit attacked a jungle hide-out of the al-Qaida-linked Abu Sayyaf group near Basilan's remote town of Ungkaya Pukan, sparking a daylong clash during which an air force pilot also died when his helicopter crashed into the sea, the military said.
The military claimed about 40 Abu Sayyaf insurgents were killed, including two commanders who allegedly took part in last month's beheadings of 10 marines on Basilan.
