I would love to see these growing guides span more time and techniques for newbies like me-what the plants look like (and should or shouldn’t look like) at different intervals, how to prune, how to harvest, etc. I have raspberries in my new backyard, and I’m wondering if I’m taking care of them correctly, and how I can do better. To me, these videos are more like “initial planting guides.” And if the videos could be a bit more concise and zoom in on more details, that would be great. I do love the channel, though, have learned a lot here, and really appreciate it! Love your knowledge and passion!

Just fyi, there are other garden channels that do show growth at different intervals etc but a vid like that takes about a year to edit as it would require going through an entire growing season or two…from planting to hopefully, some harvest. If you don’t buy a 3 yr plant, you likely won’t see fruit for 2-3 years. Thus, you won’t see many vids like you want out there. Just jump in, do some research on raspberries and adjust when needed. It’s hard to mess up raspberries so I’m sure you are doing just fine. Don’t let being a newbie overwhelm you. Just Dig in..apply fertilizer, mulch, water, and enjoy the wait. Maybe you could make a vid on what you have done and do clips through the first couple of years and create the kind of vid you want to see for others? Enjoy, whatever ever you decide.

Raspberries grow very well in my area, and once the raspberries plants in my backyard started making raspberries, in spring and summer, when I picked them, they grew back within 1-2 days. I think it's a lot better to grow raspberries than buy them, and they are also very easy to grow.

To help you from having to fix the soil pH often, you can use tree bark as mulch and over time as it breaks down it will acidify the soil, and also prevent evaporation! also, you could add some peat moss to the soil as that is known for its high Hydrogen cation count (and excellent CEC to boot!). Thanks for the video, I will be tuning in often this year and going through the VODs

It might be useful to mention how the roots behave. They will spread, and you need to keep on top of them. The roots grow horizontally underground and will put up a shoot every few inches, so if you have a healthy plant you may find shoots coming up several feet away from the main plant. Just dig down a few inches and pull out the roots, and you'll see from whence they came. If they are in good shape you can replant them if you like, or give them to friends to plant.

I got my first thornless raspberry plants this year, and they're currently in pots (because I lack space, and it's convenient if we don't want them to spread like wildfire).
Because they're in pots, I can place them wherever I'm able to, and I figured since wild plants I find out in the woodlands tend to be in shaded, partially shaded and sunny spots, I decided to place my raspberry pots on the Northern side of the house. It keeps them out of the hot sun until at least the afternoon when we do get hot summer days.

I *strongly* recommend the *Joan J* raspberry variety. I grew *Joan J* last year and like it so much that I'm replacing all my other varieties with it. *Joan J* is a thornless variety. I buy my plants from Burpee in the spring, and by July they are loaded with berries. I live in the Seattle area.

I have grown those along with many other over the years. To day I only grow the caroline everbeariing. They can be grown two different ways . As a summer bearing or a fall bearing. Either way you will get berries the first year planting even is the rabbit get at them in winter and eat them down to the ground. It won't matter .you will still produce a patch of great size and taste...Same goes for blackberry varieties . The one that produce berries on last year primocanes . If rabbits or dear eat them up then that year harvest is gone. So try the new varieties that make berries on the same year canes and it won't matter. I had 5 acre patch of berries and lost the whole field a couple times. It was a real hard lesson for me. I almost quit . Unless you devise a way to protect them from nature then consider what I am sharing with you.

We have a massive bramble of wild blackberries in our backyard. I started working to tame it last summer. It runs basically N to S, and is over 6' wide /and/ tall in places. Some of this season's new canes are nearly an inch thick. Because of it's position and width, it is it's own shade for a little under half the day. With virtually no effort put into growing them and just casually picking, we got like 6 lbs. of blackberries. This year, we're going about it in a more structured manner, so hopefully yield will be much higher.

Richard Sabo I planted a raspberry bush and my mom mowed over it and it was pretty much dead for a few years but last year it grew about 7-8' long and 3-4'wide and I had so many raspberries that most of them didn't get picked. It had one of those tomato cages because it kept on falling over and I had multiple stalks grow to be over 1" thick.

There is also a hybrid purple raspberry that is a cross between black & red types. These purple hybrids are double the size of the black jewel variety & also about 50% larger than most red types. No free lunch however as the canes are also larger & take a bit more space per plant than the red & black types.
I hope this is of some interest.

Hey Luke, I just ordered some Killarney Red Raspberries and I have never cared for any in the past. I am reading so many different things on planting and pruning of these!! Some say when you plant them to cut them just 2 inches from the ground (they say this is a must) and others say do not do this. When pruning some say take out only the 2 year old stalks and others say to mow everything down to the ground every year!!! I know this is an old video, hopefully you still see this and answer my questions. Thank you.

I found this very interesting. My husband and I are learned-gardeners. Meaning we grow and learn as we grow. 🥴
We have been growing red raspberries and blackberries for approximately 6-7 years.
Ours are next to our garden in full sun. We have not had any problems....except now that I’ve seen your video, the red raspberries are thinning out over the years and being replaced by more blackberries.
I’m wondering if this is because of the heat. We get great berries when we do harvest, if the birds don’t get them first. We have been transplanting the new growths in places where some die out just to keep more red raspberries coming year to year.
Do you think this is a sun issue or maybe a berry competition thing going on?
Maybe we can build a sun shelter and see if that helps.
Thanks for sharing! We are learning many things!

Even though I've been growing raspberries for many years there is always more for me to learn, today I learned that the silvery colored areas on some of the fruit is 'sunscald' ,and that dried up raspberries mean not having enough water! My raspberries get the full morning sun and some early afternoon sun, but the rest of the day it is filtered or fully shaded.

thanks for all the info. trying to find a good spot for raspberries at our new house and your info narrowed it down for us. we grew raspberries at our old house ... until our neighbours sprayed Roundup on a few suckers we didn't know about. live + learn to keep suckers under control. do the thornless varieties do well against birds? the birds never went near our old plants.

Just keep in mind where raspberries grow in the wild. In the woods on the verge of the forest, so partial sun, and ideally in dells or near streams. Though they will grow on slopes.

Hi, I love your growing guides! I've been looking for a good growing guide on grapes (directed at zone 5 & 6) with little luck. I was hoping to find one on your channel, but can't seem to find one here either. Am I missing it or do you think you'll make one soon? I just put my first intentional grape vine (lots of wild Fox River grapes pop up but never amount to much) in the ground in April and am hoping to do well with them. Any tips appreciated. Thanks!

Would 2 hours of strong morning sun be sufficient? We have an east wall that gets about 2 hours of solid morning sun in Northern California, Alameda County. It’s size , span I think is ideal...any thoughts?

Luke, isn't it a good idea to stake or weave your raspberry plants to fencing? Also, which raspberries grow only on new growth?

I have a raspberry plant in a container. Do I need to put some kind of support (bamboo sticks, wire, etc.)for it to grow or let it be as it is?

My black raspberries, Haut variety and Jewel produce berries on the canes that grew the previous year. My red Caroline red raspberries will produce on last year's growth and this years growth. I don't bother with last year's growth and cut down all the canes in early spring and let the new canes grow.

Mine had cane borers in them, and I live on the East Coast! The local government agriculturalist hadn't even heard of cane borers before I brought it to his attention that's what I thought I had in my raspberries. Had about 45 raspberry plants in two gallon containers in front yard. They were doing great the first and second years, until cane borers hit late in the second season. Third season was a crash landing. I've kept them for season 4. About five plants grew some fruit early in Spring and now again in Summer there is a few raspberries that make it---but still pretty much a bust. Most raspberries go brown and dry out right as they look like they are about to get mature and plump. I started to notice they needed some shade this year, and you seem to agree they need filtered sunshine---so that's agreement there. A lady in British Columbia on RUclips said the only thing to do was destroy them. I'm coming to that conclusion myself. The weird thing is I've never spotted the actual beetle in three seasons of growing almost! Looks like I may need to build a high tunnel or net off an area to keep pests from getting to my raspberries. What are your thoughts on this?

Can you talk about planting bare-root raspberries when they're going into dormancy? Do they need more phosphorus when planted in the fall, as opposed to more nitrogen when planted in the spring?

What growing zone are you in? I'm in zone 9. It gets really hot here. I've already lost two plants. At first it seemed I was watering too much and then too little. All the leaves dried up.

I transplanted some wild raspberries a couple years ago. I planted them under a large maple tree in a mound of mixed soil that I constantly take the twigs that fall from the maple and break them up onto the soil. They multiplied and filled the area in no time. This year they are going crazy. I just have to fight the blackbirds for them.

Late for the show, but looked up. I have 2 raspberry plants I am planting in 15 gallon Root bags. So I appreciate the info and looking forward to my first crop this season. They are Brandy wine variety, summer bearing. So should I cut them back after production? Do I bring them inside the garage after priduction and let them go dormat until next spring? Or cut back and leave outside until first frost and then bring them inside to the unheated garage to over winter?

Hi Luke thanks for the information my wife and I love your channel! Our raspberries are struggling what could it be? The leave started to yellow and then drying out! We have them in 30 gallon planters. We try to water every day a little bit since we live in NM, and scared of them drying out. Could it be over watering, or is it more likely a PH issue?

Since they only set fruit on new growth, do you prune them down during winter/fall/spring ? Ours don’t really go completely dormant during the winter, since we are in grow zone 10b. So far I haven’t pruned them, since I wasn’t sure if they can handle it when not dormant or if it’s needed

You maybe could have explained the different types raspberries because one type bears on the second year's canes (fall bearing) and the other on this year's canes (summer bearing). They have to be pruned differently also. There are many varieties of each for different climates, colors, and flavors. Also some are great for freezing others for jam/jellies while another will be awesome fresh. Black and purple raspberries are the highest in antioxidants while a couple yellows are rated best for fresh flavor, though the unlearned may assume the pale yellow color indicates a sickly plant‼️ 😊👍🍓🍇🍒
