I think the backlash is due to two reasons
1. Nfts generally aren't considered as a good thing by many people. Other comments go more into detail about that, so I'm not going to elaborate.
2. You could've sold a part of the ownership of the documentary through nfts. That way you actually get something back and are invested into the success of the documentary. The way it's done now just feels like buying something worthless.
Your fanbase would either support you out of the kindness of their hearts, or to buy something. The way you are doing it now seems like the worst of both worlds. You buy something, so you don't feel the happiness from donating to a cause you support, but you also don't get anything of value in return.

It is also inherently against your cause. Yes Theory is about coming together without any borders. Helping where you can with the means you have. Gatekeeping the help to 50 dollars, which may be half of someone's monthly salary in developing countries is just wrong. Restricting it to 10,000 People also prevents it from being a community effort and makes it a donation from just some people who can afford it.
The selling of a part of the ownership is such a good idea. 👏

I'd really like to support Seek Discomfort but cmon man... nobody wants to show NFTs to each other, make some kind of Kickstarter and give people perks. Signed posters, behind the scenes, maybe some ice man shirt or hoodie. Literally anything except an NFT. Also setting a minimum of $50 is probably extremely limiting, especially for a digital picture.
If they did 50$ an NFT with all the subscribers bought from this account it would be 29 million.
Why are you against NFTs? It’s an exciting technology and I love it, I am actually really excited that they didn’t do it the way you proposed
@@tobislo What's the point of doing it in a currency most people dont have (by their own admission)? There is no significant benefit or innovation, just hubris in their language. NFTs are easy targets for theft. Why do they think a thank you email is less meaningful than some dumb piece of supplemental art? Everything they want to do, they can do with an Eventbrite/Kickstarter/GoFundMe, and in USD/GBP/etc. There is nothing special about doing this in crypto. Just do it with real money.
I've seen the title change around 3-4 times before deciding on actually clicking the video and now I see why.
Really really dont like this... I love this channel and have supported for years, and the film really does sound great. But this has a feel of manipulation too it which really doesnt match the character of any of the YesTheory guys at all. Pay up and spend your money "if you believe in Yes Theory", and get your NFT "ticket". Anyone watching this believes in YesTheory, hence why they're watching the second channel, and this feels in a way like those who dont pay arent real supporters. Idk this felt really wrong...
Sad thing is I'd happily donate without a reward or a "ticket" but I dont want a semi-pointless NFT, nor to be pressured to donate to become a true fan.

I really feel like you are moving in the wrong direction with this move. I totally understand that a project of this size needs funding, but NFT's are not the move. With the last documentary, I didn't hesitate to pay the amount I felt was right for the movie (20 bucks), and I was glad you made it an option to pay the amount I could. But with this thing? 50 bucks is a lot of money for the majority of the people watching you... And to pay over 1500 (!!!) bucks for two movie tickets and a meet and greet with Ammar? How can you be inspired to seek discomfort in your everyday life by a group of whealthy and famous people travelling to everywhere on the globe. Just compare that to the video of Matt running an ironman. A little bit sad. I still 100% support their message. They aren't really in a position anymore where they can spread it though....
If you want to count on your fanbase for support on this project, You should listen to the feedback they are giving now. It's not too late to turn around. A simple Kickstarter campaign would very much be a lot better. If you're worried about fans not receiving anything outside of just a simple thank you letter, there's plenty of ways for you to make it work!
Maybe I should make it clear that Im not exactly against anything they decide to do. There's plenty of options available to them. Kickstarter is just one of them. They already have a big community that's still growing. use that. if people believe in what they are doing, they will support their project. It's been done before by another community. Who's to say Yes theory's community can't do it?
Everything they said they wanted to achieve with NFTs (receiving a minimum amount of funding, giving something back to supporters) literally just sounds like 99% of Kickstarter campaigns rofl. Just jack the price up a bit and make some physical assets/bundles to purchase to support the film. It's that easy.

NFT’s?! C’mon. If you want to reward those crowfunding beyond the gift of the documentary, just do upcharged merchandise. I read the details on the site about the blockchain you’re using and how it has less of a carbon impact but at the end of the day, I as well as most of the people commenting would rather have a tangible object than support the NFT idea. We don’t live on the internet. I seek discomfort in real life.

They do not increase the value of any art piece either, its inflated.

Let's say the merch is hoodie , it saves you from buying another hoodie which requires the same energy of manufacturing and about delivery , all clothes that are in shop,mall, showroom s,etc also require transportation from point to point (even from distant countries) which requires nearly the same energy as shipping of merch .
The idea of a “two way relationship” sounds nice but NFTs and the whole web3 ecosystem has become clouded with people that are only in it for the money, and not this “two way relationship”.
This might be the first time someone buys an NFT, but then they feel safe to get more NFTs and they’re bound to get scammed (I know I’m describing it like a gateway drug).
Time to change that image of web3 then. Crypto and nfts were made for this normal kind of exchanges in the first place.

Do not do NFT's, please. It's not right for your demographic and your image and persona as a channel. If you're trying to obtain money from people, trying to utilize the new NFT space. "Giving people a sense of ownership of a project"...You say that is the goal. But why with NFTs? There are other ways of giving people the sense of ownership/participation in a project.
I just want to know why NFTs instead of anything else, with regard to what I've previously mentioned. Always supported you guys, I just want to understand this "project" and reasoning for the integration of the NFTs.
I just don't think this video was very well explained for those who are not very familiar with NFTs, and it makes for a clouded, disconnected viewing experience for someone like myself who has always been a fan of what you folks represent yet I'm disappointed in the presentation of this video being that it seems to lack some elaboration on the NFT aspect you're incorporating into this "project" of yours, leading to the feeling of a slightly disconnected, not well-relayed information that was intended to have support. People do hate NFT's. But I think it's the way they came into the world as pictures of monkey that mean nothing. This one is a proof that you have supported and will have to show it for the premiere.
Simply don't think about "it's an image", it is a Proof of ownership. Maybe one day we will have our birth certificate as a NFT's, who know? We are living in a technology era and Yes theory do believe in this way.
If they actually wanted to '"money grab" they would have taken the 1 250 000$ offer. They are making 500k with those NFT's. But I do agree, this is for alot of people a misterious world at this moment, almost nobody have a wallet and know nothing about it. I'm pretty sure like they said they will do a help support after the launch of the collection.

I was totally behind the last film with paying what you can. With setting the minimum price as $50 is very limiting… also I’m not sure who will be paying $1,500-15,000… honestly I don’t know much about NFTs but it seems like you were pushed into this. Setting a minimum price for what is actually a disguised donation actually feels pretty… insulting? I don’t think that they realize that $50 is a LOT for what is probably the majority of their subscribers. Plus, if I have an extra $50 to donate on a cause, it’s going to feed and clothe people in war zones, not to a film I have not emotional connection to. I love Yes Theory’s films here on RUclips, but I just have a difficult time feeling a pull to fund one personally, in this climate at least.

In addition to the whole NFT-topic as a whole, im kinda bummed that the minimal contribution is 50$. I would really love to support you guys and the project, but 50 bucks is like a week of food to me and i can not afford to support you this way. Seeing the 15k package with an advisors seat is just an addition to that. Im sure that a big part of your community and your 'grassroots' is in another economical sphere and it's sad to see how people can only join 'your mission' if you have the financial possibilities. Im sure that seeking discomfort is not about money and you have proven it a lot of times in countless videos, but here it's obviously not the case.
I completely understand and I'm not saying I can buy it either (broke college student here) but art takes money unfortunately. Buying the $50 ticket is as much as buying a seek discomfort hoodie, just a donation this time. They have to finance this film somehow, and although I also do wish there was a lower price point to be able contribute, I completely understand why the price is what it is. They want to get an Oscar! And they don't have a studio budget. Art can't be given out for less than its worth if the Artist wants to benefit from it too.
Yeah, i've noticed that in their more recent videos, it's often about extravagant travels which really only they can easily do because of their financial resources and their fame. It's not really about seeking discomfort being the message anymore, since their experiences are so detached from what ANY average viewer could experience. Also, I don't think their 'grassroots' are necessarily high earners, since their videos started with relatable ways that anyone can become a better person. I think this 50$ ask can only really be payed by the small percentage that has been familliar to this channel after it's steep growth.
I have been scrolling through so many comments and not one of them was positive - I really hope that you take this feedback to heart and don't loose touch with the community. Please don't move forward with NFTs. Just give us some overpriced merch or a patreon or something like that...
Clearly most of you guys need to educate yourselves about nft and blockchain technology. Other than writing negative comments try to learn about what is this technology and how it works.

I don't get the moral outrage. They travel by plane all the time (tons of energy). They sell merch all the time (tons of energy to source materials, create product, and ship). You ask for merch but these digital assets are the environmentally friendly option
Why are they using nft as a medium to get money? It seem like nfts are basically nothing right? So they could just ask for the money. Why would someone want an nft of this documentary?

I just watched Project Iceman, and it was amazing. What’s funny is these comments saying “NFT’s are the wrong way to go”, but the whole movie is designed around the haters. You can’t do this and you can’t do that. Maybe NFT’s weren’t the perfect answer, but neither you or I have experience in releasing a film so how about let’s just let ordinary people do extraordinary things.
Ditch the NFT we simply do not think it is a good idea.
People believe in you, we know you need the money for the film, just ask for it.

Whoever decided to make a passive agressive pinned comment should take some time to cool down and not alienate more of your subscribers. Never in the history of the world was the phrase 'educate yourself' received well, especially when the comments demonstrate that most people are in fact educated well on nfts.
It is telling that whoever made that comment ignored the vast majority of comments not talking about the environmental impact but rather the predatory nature of NFTs, the gambling aspect, and the volitile nature of that economic bubble. NFTs are not good, especially when geared towards a younger audience.

I think Ammar adressed the concerns with valid points, however the whole NFT space is so incredibly toxic at the moment that people don't want anything to do with that technology, which I can understand. While Crypto and blockchain is the future, there are too many out there scamming people, mining still leaves so many with a bad taste in their mouth and the volatility and major thefts, for currencies that are pitched towards addressing the volatility of fiat currencies and the security of blockchain, crypto has publicly been failing miserably at both, it doesn't matter what the reasons are.

@@racerex340 Scams are everywhere, it's not unique to crypto. Mining is phased out in the newer blockchains and the environmental impact is minimal. The volatility can be addressed with stable coins, look up USDT and USDC. Yes I tell people to get with the times because this is here to stay. The same people who are against crypto are the same people who would say that internet is a fad in the 90s and early 2000s.

Also, while I'm not "against crypto", I'm against the average person diving into the deep end right now because it's the wild west out there. You're argument that being against crypto is age-based is moronic, the majority of people I know who are maximum gung-ho with crypto and NFT's are mostly 40-65. I was an early internet user, actually used BBS's prior to the internet skyrocketing. I've spent more years using and working with internet than most 30yr olds who have never lived in a world where the internet didn't exist. Crypto is still immature and there are far too many who are only into crypto and NFT's as investment and financial gain, with is 90% of the problem, trying to rapidly mature a technology while the majority of users are just attempting to use it to get rich quick rather than solving the issues. ETH just delayed the merge, originally slated for 2019, and that's just one single cryptocurrency with a boatload of issues.

I have been a big fan for a long time and you have helped guide my life down a better path but I really hope you reconsider using the NFT. I was gonna chip in to help this film come to life but I no longer feel comfortable doing so. I believe your hearts are in the right place but I beg you to reconsider raising the money in a different way.

I understand what you guys are trying to do, I appreciate the concern with giving the community something in return, but NFTs are nothing but an elegant pyramid scam, don’t wanna sound aggressive, but NFTs are just, well, nothing, I would love to donate for the sake of helping people I believe in realise a project they believe in, you’ve mentioned a ‘two way relationship’, if that is what you seek, I think the names of the donors in the film’s credits would be awesome, a special shirt design that you’d sell, maybe a numbered bracelet of some kind, there are many different ways you could approach crowd funding, the use of NFTs isn’t one of those ways.
I like these ideas. I don't think that you should rule out the ethical and positive use of flawed technologies tho. The supporters do not need to resell the nft's and I think this project is set up in a way that almost makes the resale of them pointless because the real benefit is supporting the project by donating. @@masken8355 Here’s where the confusion lies, NFTs are not art, the nft is a jpeg, it’s the address of the art form or whatever picture you ‘own’, in truth, it is own by whomever firstly created it, and has control over the server, NFTs are not yours forever, they are ‘yours’ for as long as the owner pays for the server, so many scams and failed projects that resulted in people losing their payed for nft property have happened.
I would love for artists to have more ways of monetising their work, NFTs are not the way.

Are you talking about the Axie Infinity heist of about 620 million worth of Ethereum? This was done by the North Korean state level hacking group, Lazarus. This has more to do with malicious intent by a country lead by a literal clown than it does the existence of NFTs.
I wish you would believe in us to give you the support and financial help you need without resorting to something like NFTs. NFTs are not accessible. NFTs do not fit with this community. Also, Carbon Capture just isnt a good solution to an increasing carbon footprint. Its better to NOT produce an large carbon footprint. Offsetting your carbon is NOT helping.

@@TheRealByron What they are doing right here is a perfect use case for it. buying an nft represents ownership of an art piece (or whatever it may be) that shows you were part of something. You can also use nfts to donate to charities, or provide instant relief to people in situations like ukraine. This is especially powerful technology because it can't be stopped by a government or any single entity because it is runs on a blockchain. I could go on but I suggest you do some research.

Hey! I really love you guys and I’ve been a long supporter since the days of project 30. I love that you’re making this documentary but please don’t make it through an NFT. I know that you’ve already probably spent a lot of money in gas fees to mint them, and probably even more money to design everything to be minted in the first place. But please please please turn back. Many of us including myself would rather buy a piece of merch or do a pay what you can to support this project. I would much rather have a piece of clothing that can show wear to show my support than having an NFT. After all people seek discomfort in the real world and having a piece of clothing to wear would spread the message of seek discomfort way further than through the use of an NFT.
I am saddened to hear, that you guys feel that there is no other way to raise funds than through NFTs. I have recently watched fewer of your videos but hearing about the new film has brought me back big time.
Your issue with having proof that one participated. : There are so many more beautiful ways to signify support and participation than an entry on the blockchain. If you'd tell me I had to pay extra, to get a challenge coin or a limited edition T-shirt, I would gladly do that. Then I'd have something physical that could remind me of this amazing community. Instead, you chose a technology that is sadly not going to be here forever. As I don't know the details of your NFT implementation, I can't know for certain, but that NFT is only going to be there, as long as the Sidechain or the server storing the art or other digital information regarding the NFT is operational. If polygon decides they don't make enough money by running the sidechain or whatever else consensus mechanism is used fails, the NFT is useless.
Together with this, the non-neglectible social impact of NFTs and blockchain lead me to the conclusion that I won't support this project through the blockchain.
I love YES Theory/Seek Discomfort, I have been following their journey for years. I am deeply dissapointed by words spoken in this video. The main aim lies in persuading (young) people of the community to buy into the unknown and YT is selling this as [direct quotes:] "the great feeling of discomfort", "to be an actual part of this project", "giving people a sense of ownership". It is misleading. Furthermore, some remarks are just manipulative and will be believed by many young people who have no knowledge (yet) or understanding of what they're actually buying into. This video is essentially pressuring the audience by appealing to their feeling and love for YT. It's manipulative and wrong. YES THEORY has a responsibility to millions of young viewers, this is a big, big blunder.

I have watched and supported YES theory for a couple years now and love everything that you guys do and stand for, I love the new documentary you are working on and am incredibly excited for it to be finished and released to the world. However, using NFTs to fund the film is not something I, and clearly many of your other loyal fans, are supportive of or agree with as a business decision. It will be interesting to see if the feedback from your audience will induce any shift in the way you approach this project.
Would you prefer they crowdfund from merch? That merch would require far more energy to create and ship. These assets are 3 emails worth of energy. Let that sink in.
@@jefffree3125 in my personal research and opinion, there are many ways to partner with highly sustainable businesses in order to create carbon neutral or carbon offset products (merchandise) and support sustainable companies and businesses in the process. Of course there is more energy going into creating physical products, that’s not the argument, but even if it was there is also a significant amount of energy, resources, and emissions being used/released when dealing with NFTs. I don’t claim to be an expert but I do know that there are a multitude of environmental issues that result from digital currency/NFT dealing and storing. There are environmental impacts either way, considering both and looking at how YES theory influences others to create and distribute content, it in my personal opinion that the use of NFTs in this way is not a smart decision for this situation. Read the comments, most of us would rather just donate without receiving physical or digital property.

Most of the energy concerns around NFTs are because 90% or so of them happen to be traded on ethereum which is energy intensive (proof of work, which currently requires 400k high powered computers). The assets the guys are talking about aren't on ethereum, which make them very friendly environmentally speaking (proof of stake, which requires a few thousand high powered computers). On top of that, in the next few months, Ethereum is actually moving to an environmentally friendly operation as well (proof of stake), which alleviates any concerns I have about the long-term impact of NFTs. Hope this alleviates a few of your concerns too :-)
Also many of those carbon off-set products are from companies buying carbon credits, which is exactly what they are doing with these digital assets despite them being of much smaller environmental impact

I've been a viewer since the group was called "Generation Y-Not" and you all lived in a small house, but I can't keep consciously supporting your work if you're endorsing and producing NFTs. There's a myriad of reasons why NFTs and a lot of the "Web3" movement have negative ethical, environmental, and economic consequences. You're funding a documentary about going to Antarctica with something that contributes to its destruction. I hope you take this as constructive criticism and reconsider promoting something that stands against the values you've sought to showcase on this channel.

seek discomfort, open your mind to new ideas. Not all Nfts are a problem to the environment, these problems are getting fixed day by day, and new projects with better solutions come around. You are only seeing the negative side and not the positive side of the coin. And the positive has much more good than the negative one.. Also this Non Fungible Token in specific only consumes 3 emails of electricity. That's nothing of damage to the environment.

Problem is your critisism isn't very constructive. You shouldn't judge a book by it's cover and that goes for this one as well.
First off: they're using Polygon which is a layer 2 of ethereum. Ethereum has POW (which isn't climate friendly), while Polygon uses POS (very climate friendly in comparison, google if you want more info).
Second: web 3.0 (incredibly overused term) cuts out the middlemen which means the money you give to Yes Theory are what they get. There isn't a corporation taking cuts. + the fact that Yes Theory keeps the creative control of the project, which isn't the case with studios.
Third: if you listened to what they said in the video, you'll know this isn't an investment. Like... wtf is the point of selling this ticket/nft on the secondhand market? Pointless
@@strmmen2359 Even though they're choosing an option that is less damaging to the environment, I still feel like the promotion of NFTs is going down a slippery slope. Most NFTs, roughly 95% (via cryptopotato), are minted with Ethereum and this only encourages people to partake in that community. Aside from the emissions they create, they don't offer much practical and tangible value if at all, further commoditize art and culture, and are often used for bad faith commerce practices. It just seems a little silly to me that these people from a multi-million dollar enterprise went out and shot a documentary, but then decide to put the financial burden on their followers using this sketchy and controversial technology. If their goal is to win an Oscar, I'm sure there's a lot of Academy voters who gladly won't put their vote towards something that uses NFTs. While studio meddling is often considered a bad thing, executives at those studios likely know more about the film industry and what it takes to win an Academy Award than people who primarily make RUclips videos.
Would love to support all the films you release but NFTs are not for me, hopefully you can change from NFTs to physical limited edition merchandise, I love Seek Discomfort hoodies and shirts, I'm hoping that's possible!

As far as I understand, the NFTs don't represent a part of the profit that this documentary will make, then an email and an NFT in this case represent the same thing, a "thank you" note to the donors. So why have 2.5 emails worth of impact when you can have 1 email worth of impact?
Secondly, It was a really good decision to not distribute a part of the profit through NFTs because it will only lead to people who have invested to aggressively push this project on every social media platform which will result in a huge backlash for this project from people who have never even heard of Yes Theory.
All in all, since an email can do the job here, why opt for an infamous tech to do it. This is a bad PR move.

As someone who has explored the Web3 and NFT space in the last year for my job, I agree wholeheartedly with the concerns of the community in this comment section. Not only are NFTs unsustainable for our environment, but there is also a huge uncertainty around the future of the space that you are not explaining to your community. There are many negative sides to using NFTs for funding and more often than not, these projects do not succeed because of the negative connotations associated with the cryptocurrency space. Until the NFT space becomes more accessible to the greater population and the unsolved complications in the space are rectified, it is not something that the majority cannot ethically support. I am a believer in YesTheory and the messages that this team spreads but feel as though NFTs will steer you in the wrong direction. Listen to your community! So many people want to support you but not if the means of supporting go against their moral values.
They have have chosen to use the “proof-of-stake’ blockchain called Polygon instead vs ‘proof-of-work’ blockchains like Ethereum or Bitcoin, because this type of network drastically reduces energy usage. The carbon impact of claiming one of the NFTs is equivalent to sending ~2.5 emails.
May I ask which chains you've been exploring nfts on?
@@nicobaad6430 Polygon may work as a “proof of stake” versus “proof of work” which drastically reduces energy use, but since it is not entirely independent of ETH main net it still has a long way to go before supporting their claim of being an eco-friendly blockchain. Proof of stake only serves to be truly eco-friendly with independent cryptocurrencies not associated with ETH at all

I agree with a majority of the other comments - was excited to support you all and this story, but do not support NFTs. I understand wanting to have something that allows people to show their "ownership" but to me this doesn't show ownership and support. It instead feels superficial and is a direct feed into the incredibly toxic NFT community. Seeking discomfort is believing in a community to support you and achieving funding based on our shared heart, not based on harmful tech. Cannot back the NFT route you guys are following. Would rather just back a kickstarter route with an actual physical product as a thank you. Hell I'd even just be fine with a simple letter or email. We all back your guys cause but this is the wrong move.

Why is that? They travel all the time by plane (energy) and physical products in place of these would require far more energy to create and ship. This is the environmentally-conscious choice.

I'm truly baffled by why people are bothered by NFT'S. Do you have a logical reason for despising that technology or is it just an emotional attachment?
There is absolutely no reason to use NFTs. None.
As for a logical reason, I'll give you the same one I give any NFT defender: You literally buy a receipt. You don't own the digital asset, you own the receipt to the digital asset. When the server hosting the "asset" inevitably shuts down, you lose your "asset". Even more than that, selling limited "premiere tickets" as NFTs will inevitably attract scalpers, who will resell them on the NFT market.
For an emotional reason, the NFT market is riddled with scammers, and having a beautiful project such as Yes Theory potentially introduce people to NFTs, and those people getting scammed after trying to buy other ones, is a risk I don't think is worth it for their image
