The Model 3 has THE lowest rate of depreciation rate of any car at 5.5%. EVs cost about a third for fuel per mile compared to an ICE vehicle. EV maintenance is next to nothing compared to an ICE vehicle which by comparison is a Rube Goldberg machine. Go look up Rube Goldberg as you're obviously rather ignorant and wouldn't get the reference, grasshopper.

Tesla is now both faster and more fun to drive. You don't have to believe it but once this virus thing is over and all the tests can resume this will become apparent :D

Merch should depict "exploded" engineering diagrams of interesting (Novel + Awesome + Tesla (Anything Tesla specific comes ready made with a legion of slavering fan nerds (like me))) subsystems. Ideas: Tesla regenerative braking system - depicts and calls out the "magical" components. Anything with question marks where a descriptor or explanation should be will provide an air of mystery and awesomeness. Tesla Induction Motors: show an exploded diagram of how the rotor magnet is made of of all those laminated layers - include prominent callouts for the mysterious components. Annotate interesting things with US patent numbers. (geeks love that shit) Tesla battery management system: Tesla FSD computer circuit (mother) board: label the prominent items: RAM, GPUS, DATA BUS, CPU(s), block out the redundancy-ness (Thing 1 and Thing 2) Overall the Munro mystique is that you plumb the magical depths of automotive manufacturing tech. Play up the mysteriousness of this in your merch. Might work for other carmakers' stuff too. I've heard there are other carmakers, though i personally pay exactly zero attention to any of them. I'm a technologist, not a paleontologist.

Hey Sandy, do manufacturers normally have a closed system? I am quite surprised there is an oil filter - I would assume you never change it like a differential or gearbox once or two a lifetime
@@accountname1651 It will probably last a long time, but in a gearbox, small pieces of metal filings come off from gears and bearings over time. These need to be removed or it will turn the oil more and more into grinding paste, accelerating the wear. Normally it is a closed system. On some truck gearboxes, they use magnets at the bottom to collect the metal filings, but that would only work if all materials used are ferromagnetic.
I have a few ideas.... crabs, dui's or gold diggers. I'm going with like Mud or Cherry scented lip stick. Mud is a reference to "treat them like dirt, they stick like mud" or Jack Off Jill - Cherry Scented Lipstick... "turn that tattoo into a bruise."
You should consider monetizing your videos to make extra income. We would not mind commercial here or there. Thank you for the excellent content and fantastic insights.

The rotor of the e-tron is ludicrously old-school, technology-wise. Very much what you find in standard, industrial AC induction motors. Induction motors of the Model S used copper rotors instead of aluminium rotors, which is a lot more efficient because copper is a lot more conductive than aluminium. Man, i understand now why the e-tron is so inefficient... that's German engineering for you.
Actually aluminium is more conductive compared to it's weight (specific conductivity) compared to copper. And weight of the rotor is important because of inertia. So while copper helps with efficiency it's not always the best choice when it comes to performance. Also aluminium casting is really cheap compared to machined copper. It's always a trade off.
@@ytxstream Well, I don't think rotor inertia is a huge issue there, because it's negligeable vs. the inertia of the whole car you want to move. So the important point here is the electrical resistance, and should be as low as possible for better efficiency (because the currents inducted in a rotor of an induction motor are quite large, hundreds of amps in that case). Imagine an induction motor as a transformer in short-circuit at its output, the primary being the stator, and the secondary the rotor. But anyway, the e-tron efficiency is catastrophic, so for an EV, this kind of AC induction motor with aluminium rotor is a poor technical choice.

@@ytxstream I dont' think that machining copper is that expensive when looking at how important the efficiency is and how expensive those cars are. Also, I would assume that inertia is almost negligible in the automotive use case(the energy of spinning rotor vs the energy of whole car moving). Copper is also way denser making the whole rotor smaller so the radius can be smaller further reducing inertia if you want that. Tbh I don't think there are any real positives of aluminum other than a lower cost(which maybe makes sense in some cheap devices and not a car for 100k).

@@skaltura While technically true, it is not that simple. If you use Tesla patents, you also have to release your own patents that are associated with similar technology. It is a bit like a GNU license but for patents. The automotive industry being conservative as hell, it is unlikely to happen. It could with some newer and smaller startups. But if you go too far, Tesla will sue you, as hast happened with Xiaopeng Motors.
@@butterflysleg9649 Yeah, i think Tesla sued the employee because he uploaded autopilot source code to his cloud and that gave that to xpeng motors. Just search "xpeng motors stealing" and you should find plenty of articles going into detail of the story.

Sandy, you teach me so much about car technologies. I can teach you a bit about allergies: Google the Butekyo method. There are many resources, but www dot normalbreathing dot com (no affiliation) is one of the most comprehensive. Modern man is breathing faster than a century ago. (More stress, more talking, faster living,, diet, indoor climate, etc.). This drops our co2 levels and our availability of oxygen at the cell level (due to the Bohr effect). This makes the immune system more alert and overreactive (pollen, allergens) and you get more of the allergens in your system by breathing more than you need. By learning to breathe through my nose 24/7, and slower, I completely got rid of hay fever and other allergies. Had it for 2 decades!! Many other health improvements as well. I know it sounds good good, but really... You're a science and data driven person.. invest a bit of investigative time into the Buteyko method for a possible huge improvement in health quality. Allergies can be a hell!

1:15 Sandy, I think that PM motor has a special rotor geometry to allow for field weakening. You can see a quite thick zone on the laminates between the magnets compared to other PM designs. Field weakening allows for greater top speed. In a PM motor this is done by playing with the stators field angle relative to PM rotor's field. By making the winding's field go not straight through the magnets, but some of it also bypassed through the iron, you affect the global field. Switched reluctance motors are doing something similar but here I think the goals is field weakening for better top speed. Thanks for the detailed views of so many motors. If a PM motor ever overheats, the magnets lose their magnetism and the motor becomes useless, something like >200F. Haven't heard of any failures due to that, and surely every BEV monitors the motor temperature and warns or shuts down if too hot, but still something to consider. The various cooling systems and their reliability are also of interest.
Sandy these videos in and of themselves are offering value and enjoyment for many thousands of people. Other RUclips channels work with sites like Patreon to raise voluntary funding. I think this series could raise hundreds of thousands of dollars towards "keeping the lights on" as you put it.

So the important point here is the electrical resistance, and should be as low as possible for better efficiency (because the currents inducted in a rotor of an induction motor are quite large, hundreds of amps in that case). Imagine an induction motor as a transformer in short-circuit at its output, the primary being the stator, and the secondary the rotor.
But anyway, the e-tron efficiency is catastrophic, so for an EV, this kind of AC induction motor with aluminium rotor is a poor technical choice.
@@ytxstream Rotational inertia doesn't matter much for highway efficiency since the speed is steady.
@@ytxstream "Actually aluminium is more conductive compared to it's weight (specific conductivity) compared to copper" - Which is what matters most in cabling (when the goal is to keep mass down), but *not* in a motor, where flux *density* is the key. Increasing the volume lowers your flux density.
@@ytxstream I dont' think that machining copper is that expensive when looking at how important the efficiency is and how expensive those cars are. Also, I would assume that inertia is almost negligible in the automotive use case(the energy of spinning rotor vs the energy of whole car moving). Copper is also way denser making the whole rotor smaller so the radius can be smaller further reducing inertia if you want that. Tbh I don't think there are any real positives of aluminum other than a lower cost(which maybe makes sense in some cheap devices and not a car for 100k).

Everyone does their motors differently because everyone has gotten patents preventing each other from sharing designs.
Tesla allows others to use their patents for free in perpetuity
@@skaltura While technically true, it is not that simple. If you use Tesla patents, you also have to release your own patents that are associated with similar technology.
It is a bit like a GNU license but for patents. The automotive industry being conservative as hell, it is unlikely to happen.
It could with some newer and smaller startups. But if you go too far, Tesla will sue you, as hast happened with Xiaopeng Motors.

Sandy, you teach me so much about car technologies. I can teach you a bit about allergies:
Google the Butekyo method. There are many resources, but www dot normalbreathing dot com (no affiliation) is one of the most comprehensive. Modern man is breathing faster than a century ago. (More stress, more talking, faster living,, diet, indoor climate, etc.). This drops our co2 levels and our availability of oxygen at the cell level (due to the Bohr effect). This makes the immune system more alert and overreactive (pollen, allergens) and you get more of the allergens in your system by breathing more than you need. By learning to breathe through my nose 24/7, and slower, I completely got rid of hay fever and other allergies. Had it for 2 decades!! Many other health improvements as well. I know it sounds good good, but really... You're a science and data driven person.. invest a bit of investigative time into the Buteyko method for a possible huge improvement in health quality. Allergies can be a hell!

1:15 Sandy, I think that PM motor has a special rotor geometry to allow for field weakening. You can see a quite thick zone on the laminates between the magnets compared to other PM designs. Field weakening allows for greater top speed. In a PM motor this is done by playing with the stators field angle relative to PM rotor's field. By making the winding's field go not straight through the magnets, but some of it also bypassed through the iron, you affect the global field. Switched reluctance motors are doing something similar but here I think the goals is field weakening for better top speed. Thanks for the detailed views of so many motors. If a PM motor ever overheats, the magnets lose their magnetism and the motor becomes useless, something like >200F. Haven't heard of any failures due to that, and surely every BEV monitors the motor temperature and warns or shuts down if too hot, but still something to consider. The various cooling systems and their reliability are also of interest.
