No, root is not required Maybe by installing drivers you can connect your phone, try the given procedure You should try this 1)Install Miuiflash tools to unlock bootloader 2)Connect your phone with fast boot mode 3)Click on the settings on the top right corner 4)Click install drivers and now reboot your phone and try connecting to the PC again simple words- You should try watching a video about unlocking bootloader that will help you install the drivers for the phone
