Maple Leaf Rag in 12 keys and 4 time signatures, 2 pianos

- Daniel Souvigny, right, challenged Tom Brier to play Scott Joplin's 1899 hit "Maple Leaf Rag" in all 12 major keys. Daniel is joined midway through by Max Keenlyside, who has famously played this rag in two different keys at the same time on two differently-tuned pianos ( • Maple Leaf Rag on two ... ).
Max then suggests playing the rag in waltz time (three-beat rhythm). Later, Tom throws them off by switching to a half-and-half (five-beat rhythm), then switches to a compound march meter (6/8 time) before returning to five beats.
This was during the afterglow party following the 2014 West Coast Ragtime Festival in Rancho Cordova, California.

I can't believe they just challenged the god of ragtime
But isn't this song like 1 of his standards?
It's all in fun. I'm sure the kid knew who he was "challenging." So cool to watch😊
@@bouncingsoul777 lmao calling Daniel Souvigny a “kid”. Hes arguably the best pianist in his generation
@@ohboi9578 he’s still a child. And good you said arguably because there’s a lot of different styles of piano
In those days, Daniel Souvigny would challenge ANYONE on the piano. That’s why he is duetting with so many people after hours in these videos.
Ref: Rag-off. Ready? GO!
10 minutes later....
Tom: You were good kid, real good. But as long as I'm around you'll always be second best see?
HartlessSC
Kid: well from that head of "hair", I can tell you won't be around for much longer
Jacqueline Leiman Too soon
You do know about the car crash, right?
I am so sorry about that crash. I am glad he is getting better, but what a loong time! Poor guy!

How can there be people talking with this amazingness going on?
+Kemanorel Kin Well, it was a dinner party...
Keeper1st
I know, but if I heard that, I'd have to stop talking and listen.
+Kemanorel Kin Well, you also must understand that this was at the end of three solid days of ragtime performances going on simultaneously in five different venues. So, by now you're pretty well used to it!
Kemanorel Kin this is ragtime not classical.
So true. XD
Lol challenging Tom is a death wish
You're not wrong...
XD
This man is a legend!
So, you chosen DEATH?
Yup.
exactly :)
The musical IQ needed for the amount of improvising here is mind-blowing
There are pianists and there are guys like these! 👏👏
Its just transposition duude come on be smart
@@aymanelbouzidi3252 Exactly, like what improvising?
@@aymanelbouzidi3252 there is lots of improvising, he just makes sure you can hear the melody so the tune is recognizable. He even switches the time signature to 6/8 and 5/4 and others
Musical iq is a way for phd’s to bully actual musicians also there is no improv just transposition
I wish I could play ragtime a fourth as good as Tom Brier
I wish I could play ragtime a 16th as well as Tom can even considering the car accident.
A fourth of infinity is still infinity. Sorry, but you're asking too much.
A hemidemisemiquaver as well.
quarter
Tom’s maniacal laughs when he’s just living with what he’s playing are what I love the most about him
"hey man what key you in?"
All of them
I get the reference
GreenLeaf5656 haha I get it!
Yes
I get it😂😂
I love when these show up in my recommendations.
Praying for Tom
I like to believe that the flash at 6:22 turned Toms waltz mode on.
Indeed it did!
I love how one of the people in the background in the beginning just went "Oh no... oh no!"
He recognized the song, and knew what was coming.
This is so ridiculously amazing I couldn't help but laugh. The 5/4 change blew me away!
at the end, I shout "Now seven!" Tom's brief attempt ended with him saying, "I can't think in seven! YOU do it!" I had it in my head but I can't translate to the keyboard so quickly. I did start writing it out in 7/8 though -- the first two strains thus far. Here's a very rough rendition to show the idea: www.keeper1st.com/music/mapleleaf7.mid
@@Keeper1st Although I won't say it fits best, I still think that 5/4 and 7/4 (or 7/8) sound really interesting if you have a hang for it. And for those who are not that well musically educated (I asked some), it sounded "weird", but "refreshing" at the same time.
@@Keeper1st Could you also provide a .mid file of the 5/4 version?
@@ryanaueong I actually wrote a 5/8 version of my own, but I'd have to write it down again. I can play it, however.
@@draco4569 How about a sheet music for this version?
5:55 lmao, the looks Max and Daniel were giving Tom here made me think that they thought Tom was inventing a new key or something LOL. These guys are on another level, jesus.
Edit: I didn't even notice that laugh was Tom's, ROFL. HE KNEW WHAT HE WAS DOING TO THEM. THIS GUY IS HILARIOUS.
actually they were playing in b, a ridiculously hard key for ragtime. Tom messed up and laughed at himself
B is a ridiculously hard key for any kind of music, in my opinion! (Maybe unless you're a string player... I'm a wind player and enjoy my flats.)
+Michael L. Bowie classical piano music in b isn't too bad
+Joshua Sobel Like I said, as a wind player, most of us hate sharp keys. Cool that classical piano isn't bad for B though.
Michael L. Bowie of course it's hard for wind and brass, they're transposition instruments.
The guy playing the spoons laost it when he played in 5-beat. I liked it.
how did this even
what
At times it sounds a bit like Daniel is either improvising on a blues scale (but not really) or he isn't keeping up with Tom on the key changes. Still, he does a good job, and I don't blame him for being outdone by one of the best ragtime pianists I've ever listened to. If he keeps at it, he could have a very bright future.
The blues scale can save you when you run out of ideas, it's a safe melodic line to return to and fits with major or minor.
I wouldn’t be surprised if Tom was related to Joplin
i hate to say it, but tom plays better than joplin ever did
@@thonk7611 yup, Joplin has some really bad stds and health issues, he was a very shaky player.
@@donaldowensiii7478 Scott Joplin stds?
Joplin was born to two ex-slave parents, which, given that they are of African descent, makes this practically impossible.
@@jacobschiller4486 yeah, but tom is pretty damn good though
This video makes me smile so much...seeing such talented musicians play their instruments with so much joy and having fun together is awesome
That's part of why I keep coming back to watch this video.
@@Mr_Original I do that as well😂
tom brier is one of the few people on earth that would be able to make me feel star struck when meeting him
I found this video in 12th grade. Been 4 years since I graduated, and I still keep coming back. I'll never get tired of this.

My dream is to meet Tom Brier. Every single Keeper video reminds me.
You're not the only one. XD
Définetly not the only one! :)
Positively not the only one!
Most certainly not the only one!
Surely not the only one!
My cousin and I did Maple Leaf Rag at a steak house in Pasadena years ago. However, whole we impressed the audience, we did not change keys. We did not have Max Keenlyside sit beside either of us to assist. He was yet to be born! God, i think I'm old enough to be his grandfather.
Terrific! I like the change in genres and time signatures!!! Fabulous!
Thanks for uploading this!! 3 fantastic musicians! Super.
Us: This is a hardcore challenge
Tom: Owh it's just one of my daily exercises, don't worry 'bout me
Somebody pick my jaw up from off the floor.
This must have been very fun to witness live! I can't believe how well Daniel did... He's going to be beyond incredible if he keeps working hard!! I wish I could get out to California for the festival.
IT"S SO AWESOME IN 6/8!!!!!!!!!!
Tom knew damn well how to shut the spoon guy up while still wowing everyone in the crowd. What a legend
Playing songs in all 12 keys is awesome. The 12 keys are A, Bb, B, C, Db, D, Eb, E, F, Gb, G, and Ab.
Wow I had no idea
starting key is what was the big deal...
Technically there are 15 keys.

I'm crying over how amazing this is. Hats off to you guys.
Now this is what I call a GRAND PERFORMANCE!
Those guys are just unstoppable and plain amazing. I enjoyed it a lot!
...and did I point out that Daniel is only 14?
Wait 'til he's had a few years of playing under his belt...!
@@Keeper1st Is Tom playing in 5/4 at 9:50? If yes, could you make a score of it?
I've never heard of improvisation in ragtime as good as this!!
There is a great record by Roy Spangler on Rex records (an extremely rare vertical groove company) called “Medley of Snyder and Berlin Hits” from about 1913 or so, that is the single greatest AUDIO RECORDING I’ve ever heard of ragtime piano improvisation from the original era. Unfortunately it’s also extremely rare (less than 10 extant copies) and has never been issued on LP or CD and is not yet on RUclips; but I heard it at a friend’s house and with their permission may put it up. It is not to be confused with the Mike Bernard Columbia record of a very similar name from around the same time.
@@andrewbarrett1537Hey bro, you wrote this 2 years ago but there are no videos on your channel, what happened?
Hot as those pianos got, hope the A/C was on!
Some incredible talent on display here!
This is so awesome....wow!!!!!!
Props to both players. Amazing work!
Work? No work -- all play!
Max, Daniel, and Tom: all of the playing was simply amazing and enjoyable to the last drop! But can we take a second to admire how comfortable and smooth Daniel is with the form, and how well he kept up with Tom even after Tom took over the lead? This guy is a prodigy in the making, if he isn't there already! (yes, I know this is over 6 years old now, but that's how RUclips recommendations work sometimes) Looking forward to seeing and discovering more of Daniel's performance!
He has some recordings out I think. One is titled “Possibilities”
The boy on the right seems like he's played this forever.
Just outstanding. Thank you.
They better give this man a ted talk after he recovers
This is one of the best things I have ever watched!!
Agreed.
You pull up to the tavern and these two are just going ham
All the laughing really adds to the ambience if you're listening while you work.
Almost forgot to watch this today
AMAZING......well done --- very well done!
Made me smile and then laugh several times out loud during those crazy key signature changes!!!!
The perfect pitch in me is very very pleased. Love love LOVE this!!
it just looks like they're having lots of fun. This is amazing :)

I'd do it. I don't like dancing, and I don't like caus I ng a scene in public, but I'd do it. XD
Amazingly fun!!
I would have loved to be there in person to see and hear this! What a party!!!
Dude whipped the kids hands down and never missed a beat with only 2 hands and they needed 4

Did I just hear part of the piccolo line from Stars and Stripes Forever?
Not sure it was from Stars & Stripes Forever, but certainly a line like the piccolo part of Sousa marches in general.
@@Keeper1st May I suggest, not a line from Sousa but from "March of the Canadian Patriot" Max's own march written at 14 yrs old & played at his HS graduation by the school band.
what a piano celebration, very brave young guys challenging Tom Brier!
And that is how a classic turns into a meme
This is awesome !
Reminds me of the piano cutting contest in the Scott Joplin biopic: "Hey, what key you in? What are you doin' with them keys?"
love in every note
This is amazing
I love how much the piano Daniel is playing on shakes while they play.
Such wonderful insanity!

My god this is a blast! I love this :D
This sounds so cool!!!!!!!!!!
Truly remarkable stuff. I wouldn't believe it if I didn't see it.
I can't stop listening!!!
O,h what a great party piece, what fun.
Wow, I'm just noticing your video description. Do you guys really have that much of a problem with idiots trying to sue you for copyright violations on obviously old public domain songs?
+Melissa0774 Yes. My latest video, also of Maple Leaf Rag, also has a copyright dispute in progress. A company called AdRev is the worst offender in claiming to own music that's in the public domain.
+Melissa0774 My nephew posted a video of his recital of a piece he composed and two weeks later RUclips pulled his video because someone claimed they own the copyright. It might be the same people I don't know. There are a lot of criminals pulling the copyright scam on RUclips.
nunya biznez I'm not a spammer.
Just listen smarty and you may learn.
nunya biznez Sue them for false copyright claims.
This is a serious cutting contest here!!
Incredibly talented! Absolutely speechless
Love it!! Love it! These are my favorite kind of fights, lol.
2v1 and they still can't handle him.
I hope he recovers his piano skills.
Listen closely: it’s so, so sloppy. But they are having fun! And that’s what music is about: bringing joy to others
The dude playing the spoons reminds me of my grandpa. He used to do that at family reunions all the time.
Amazing
What fun!
Although I can't tell from just listening, I'll bet it was interesting when they got to the key of B.
This is crazy good. I get winded just playing this song one time in one key. I need to practice more or something.
Nobody should stop watching until they get to at least 8:00 minutes. But also, if you skip to 8:00 , you’ll miss the build up that makes the whole video so amazing.
Basically watch the whole damn thing, otherwise you're doing yourself a disservice. 😂

Bravo!!!!!
I clearly haven’t been practicing the MLR enough.

I miss the Minor Keys...
Gad, I want to see this anime. Tom is definitely the old master who shows the young protagonists where the power creep is heading in the first few episodes. If they can do a tennis anime, they can freaking do a finger wizard piano anime for sure.
Ikrrrrr
you've got to love everyones great attitude
people dont realise how insanely hard this is!
What fun! How lucky these players to have such wonderful skill that the rest of us can only marvel at and they take for granted!
Jasper de Bock I realise they weren't born able to play! Many of us practice and no matter how many hours we put in, never approach this skill level, that is the difference - its having the aptitude in addition to the desire - Im one of them!
thats fine, Im sure you are as concerned about Tom making a full recovery after his appalling accident, he would be an irreplaceable loss to our musical enjoyment
@@STANLIZ4 I knew a great ragtime/stride pianist in New York whose father had to lock up the piano and have her learn to read music on cardboard keyboard otherwise she would have kept playing each new lesson by ear.
