lets be real most americans don't know how tariffs work the consumer pays more not the country.
Companies like the Koch brothers and Walmart will be paying the tariff when they bring the Chinese crap here, but if they try to pass on the cost to consumers, their product can't compete with the same US made product. There'll eventually be other US companies that start having it made here with US workers and selling it cheaper, which means Walmart will go under. It's gonna take time and 25% is just the start. Later the tariffs will be going up alot more, until Walmart and the ones buying Chinese things to sell, will have to pay so much that they will either go under, or buy US made things.

Canada can simply ban any US aircraft from its airspace, stop all natural gas and oil exports to the US, close the crossings between Detroit and Ontario to automotive products, and halt timber exports to the US. We have lots of global trading partners who will support us.

They have been ramping up these meetings at breakneck speed this year. President Xi is meeting someone or some delegation literally everyday. They are ready. And their trading partners are ready too. I do wish Canada and Mexico right now are working on other suppliers of goods than the USA. If they succeed, they can meet US tariffs with double tariffs to punish the US heavily.

Tariffs also affect the businesses who export the goods, not just the consumers who buy the imported goods. If you have a product for $11, and we have a similar product for $10... a 25% tariff makes it $12.50. Who do you think the consumer's going to buy from? This will hurt Canadian businesses, and will also raise prices on American goods that require resources from Canada or Mexico to produce. And don't forget tourism... 20 million Canadians visited the US last year. We are your biggest group of tourists. How will you replace the billions of dollars we don't spend in your country if we boycott you?

Inflation of 2% is good and the goal. 3% was typical until GOP starting ruining the economy and now people are less likely to have babies. So now 2% is expected average.
What would have been a smarter plan is to incentivize American businesses for the first two years to make things we don't manufacture domestically and only import from other countries, and then impose some tariffs. However, this is similar to the "build a wall" situation, where it's just putting a Band-Aid on an amputated limb. Hope you don't need something we don't make here.

Could you help me understand how that would work? I mean, cheap labor in other countries would be a savings nullified once tariffs jacked the price up as an import to American vendors.

America de-industrialized a long time ago. American economy is pretty much financialized. To bring back industry will take a long time. In America’s case, it could be an entire generation because of the lack of trained and educated labor force. It’s easy for politicians to sell that line.
