To hopefully clear up any confusion, Playtime Co. started turning the orphans into toys because they had the idea of selling living toys to people. Imagine having a toy that you can actually interact with. The big toys like Huggy, Mommy, and Catnap were made to work into the factory, not to be sold. However it didn’t work because, some experiments weren’t cognitive enough, or were aggressive because, well, who wants to be turned into a toy against their will. PS: The reason they attacked Bron(the red Dino) is because they knew he was an adult and not a child
@slimedragon2700 Actually, they weren't selling real life toys to people, just the regular ones. The alive ones were experiments made from orphans, and sometimes rarely as adults to do certain work around the factory. Huggy was made as a sort of gaurd, Mommy long legs was made to watch over the children in playcare (a place we visit in chapter 2), and CatNap was created to put children to sleep, to help test them. There's also Boxy Boo, the main villain in Project Playtime, who was made to eat anything, mostly people who tried to find the real reason why these bigger bodies were made: to try and replicate how Poppy was created, because she doesn't need to eat sleep or drink anything, but the others do(Also, a person named Dr. Harley Sawyer A.K.A the Doctor made all of these experiments). But, a lot of toys were being starved, abused, or just wanted to leave. So, the prototype (experiment 1006) Made a plan to fight back against the workers. It was called the hour of joy, where they kill everyone in sight, and take all the bodies to eat them. But our character who works there wasn't at work when that happened. Now, 20 years later, we get a message to come back to the factory and find the flower, and the rest is history!
@mayhemmonkeylol I know about the bigger bodies, what I meant was that they were planning to sell living toys once they were able to successfully make ones that could talk and behave but they couldn’t do to bad press and experiments not behaving of failing.
@slimedragon2700 I don't think they ever planned to release living toys? The only reason they've made living toys is because they were trying to recreate how Poppy lives without eating or drinking, and the only reason she was made was because Elliot Ludwig created her because he didn't want her daughter to die, but he never told anyone how he created her.
@mayhemmonkeylol The one who didn’t need to eat or drink is the prototype (probably because he’s made out of metal). Also you mixed up playcare and the game station. Mommy long legs worked at the game station not playcare. Playcare is the orphanage.
@witherscientist Right, I meant it the other way around. But I'm pretty sure both of them didn't need any normal living requirements like eating or sleeping, which is why Poppy was so important, along with the prototype.

And the MAIN antagonist of Poppy Playtime, Experiment 1006, The Prototype
All of the bigger toys except The Prototype were all made by one man, Doctor Harley Sawyer.

(The person in charge of the 'bigger bodies initiative' basically a sort of program that scientists would experiment on orphans to turn them into bigger body toys) was turned into experiment 1354 "The Doctor" So yes, he Was turned into not a toy, but a machine that could watch over the entire prison. and also help with the bigger bodies' initiative.
Fun Fact: Experiment 1160 (Boxy Boo) was the first ever successful bigger body subject, but since he was the first, he lacked IQ and wasn't able to speak due to his low intelligence.

the boy in the photo in the chapter 3 trailer is named Theodore Grambell, he is one who ended up becoming CatNap. While he was human, he got into a serious accident where he almost died but the Prototype saved him, so he treats the prototype as a god.

I like how Poppy Playtime went from being this game that was made just to sell merch to an actual, properly scary game with legit lore and care put into it. Also, this game is less so like FNAF (unless you're talking about Security Breach) and moreso like Bendy and the Ink Machine. Story-based horror game about corrupting your youth in an episodic format.
It was never "made to sell merch". For the longest time, the only merch was bootleg stuff. It's not their fault people horribly misjudged the first chapter thanks to predatory content farms. Just because the story took some time to come out doesn't mean it didn't exist.
I actually didn't know that they didn't make merch at first, that's pretty cool. And yeah, the story took a bit to build, but it's pretty great now

the owner of playtime co has nothing to do with the experiments. it's revealed in chapter 4 that those behind the whole bigger bodies thing had him killed cause he found out what they were doing, that leaf pierre guy who was head of security is the one running everything. it's unknown if he is alive or dead still.

For context on the Smiling Critters, all of them when you pull their tails give off a scent meant to comfort children. Something went wrong with Catnap's at some point so whatever was used for his scent caused nightmares.(It's implied that it might be gas used on the orphans)

SPOILER FOR PEOPLE WHO HAVE NOT PLAYED
Explanation: poppy playtime is a horror game where you used to be a employee and on 2005 you came back looking for your co workers after 1995 The hour of joy where the toys killed everyone and then at the end of the chapter we release poppy from the case and then but i forgot to mention huggy wuggy was one of the successful toys so they made a pink version of him (kissy missy) and then we wake up where we left off and chapter one and then we meet poppy again after grabbing a key and entering elliot ludwigs(the founder of playtime co) office and then she says she has a train code for the train to escape until we meet our chapter 2 antagonist mommy long legs (her human name is marie payne) and she says that we have to play 3 of her games including musical memory, whack a wuggy, and statues, in musical memory our antagonist is bunzo bunny its a room where we have to remember the colors (just like the game simon) and then we press the colors in that order and on whack a wuggy there is 18 sizeable holes and our antagonist there are the mini huggys and we use our grabpack to slap them back (why did i say that) like whack a mole but if they get left untouched they attack you and on statues its basically a obstacle course and our antagonist is pj pugapiller where the lights are off you can move but when the lights are on you cant move but you can look around and after we finish the games mommy long legs kills off the mini huggys and bunzo for failing but she didn't kill pj pugapiller (idk why) and then she gets mad and she plays hide and seek with us and if she like catches us she kills us and then we get down a hallway and she gets her hand caught in a shredder and dies and then we go on the train and then poppy makes the train go the other way because she "needs us" or whatever i forgot what she said and then we derail

I really like the detail that the Nightmare Critters' scents are mostly heavier scents more appreciated by older demographics, very fitting for a brand variant made to appeal to college kids who started a cult fandom of sorts for Smiling Critters.
