If you consider how little acting experience had Jack Gleeson when he was portraying Joffrey it makes it more impressive how amazing he was. In every interview his cast members describe him as the sweetest, kindest person.

Jon Snow didn't miss, he couldn't do it. On a deeper level, he was listening to the voice of his father "the man who passes the sentence must swing the sword". He didn't think the girl was guilty, so he couldn't execute her.

The Hound is the textbook example of the "jerk with a heart of gold" trope. He's perpetually angry, he's rude to everyone, but hurt someone he cares about and the hell he sends you to will seem like heaven after what he does to you.

I love how Tywin knows Arya is hiding her real identity but since he likes her, he deliberately avoids prying too much because he doesn't want to feel obligated to imprison her or something because he found out she's part of some important Northern House and it would prove strategically advantageous. Of course, since Tywin operates on "real world rules" instead of "fantasy story rules" he never in a million years would suspect this girl is Arya Stark because it makes no logical sense for her to be there in Harrenhall, so far a way from King's Landing. He's assuming she's the daughter of some minor Northern noble House and that allowing her to keep pretending to be a peasant girl in order to survive the war is harmless to the interests of House Lannister. And he likes her so much that he even gave her an honest answer when she asked him about his father, which is one of the rare moments where Tywin lowers his guard and shows a somewhat vulnerable side, which he hasn't even shown to his children in the show, though I assume he has shown it over the years since he told Arya that she reminded him of his daughter, implying that's part of the reason he likes her. I would've happily watched a whole episode of Arya serving Tywin wine while they talk about the war and their families.
Tywin is one of the best character I've ever seen on any of the series and movie. I'm honestly not a fan of tywin during first time watch. But after Seeing hotD i decide to rewatch got. And dang tywin is a legend.

There's also great parallels with the Jon, Theon, and Robb storylines - Jon and Robb both being "tempted" by women, and Jon and Theon demonstrating the difference between real strength (Jon's code won't let him execute Ygritte) and cowardice (Theon enacting false "strength" by executing Ser Rodrik). Btw, the actors who play Jon and Ygritte are now married with a son.
And it was very special for Jon as he married his "wildling" in real life! He'd have never met her if not for GoT! 🤗 I saw a video of him singing "Wild Thing" to her but he changed it to "Wildling". It was so cute. 😊❤
14:44 yeah, and on top of that, ser rodrik is the one who taught theon to fight with a sword. It becomes even more tragic when you consider that his death means the end of house cassel (he and jory, the guy who got killed by Jaime in season 1 when the lannisters attacked ned were the last male members)
The fact Tyrion says "well done Clegane" is a small thing but The Hound is caught unawares as he's that used to being called "dog" or "the hound". You can tell he appreciates it.

The scene with Theon not being able to behead Ser Rodrik cleanly is in part because he was using the wrong sword, but more importantly, it was done this way to show that Theon is weak and is not a leader. You can see it in other scenes as well, Theon basically seems to have taken Winterfell from the Starks just so he could say that he did it, that he was finally better than them, but these were people he'd grown up with, so he didn't want to hurt anyone. He's constantly getting talked into it by other members of the Ironborn because he's essentially as insubstantial as a leaf, and will blow in the direction of the person with the strongest breath.
There's also a contrast between Theon killing Ser Rodrick and botching the execution, and Jon Snow refusing to behead an innocent--from Jon's moral code--girl.
Alfie Allen's acting after he decapitated Rodrick is incredible. You can totally see the guy who pushed himself too far and he is torn between "What have I done ?" and "Did I do it right ?"
Theon is definitely conflicted, but he not only wants to do well by his father for acceptance, but his sister's taunting probably pushed him into wanting to outdo her.
Dagmer and Theon's plan that you didn't quite get last episode was to send the bulk of their forces to attack Torrhen's Square, causing the Starks to send their men there to help and leave Winterfell unguarded for Theon's small force to take over.

It's not an anthropological study. Explaining things that were not meant to be missed makes future reactions better not worse.

Theon Greyjoy is a really fascinating character both in the show and the books. He obviously makes some bad decisions, but if you put yourself in his place you can kind of understand why he does so to an extent -- he was really put into a difficult situation given his family and life circumstances and that conflict makes him compelling. And I honestly think Alfie Allen's performance as Theon is one of the best and most underappreciated in the whole series.
Yeah but his internal thoughts in his POV in the books just make him worse. Like, his very first POV (the only one I've read so far) shows that the answer to Bran's "Did you hate us the whole time?" is actually "Yes." And the way he treats that poor girl... ick.

If someone killed your family members and then took you away from your home, I think you would hate them too. Even if they were nice to you.

Was close with rob but the other kids are to young. Sansa is like 11 (and isn't nice to theon or Jon at all). Rob is 13 and theon is 19. He was scared shitless of ned who would sometimes be nice and at other times be cold and distant probably because he reminded himself of having to kill theon if balon rebelled and all the servants treated him worse then Jon because everyone in the seven kingdoms despises the iron born.
I maintain that Theon’s most critical mistake was his decision to be prince of winterfell and not just capture the stark boys and retreat back to the iron islands.

Agreed. It’s nice to have a new upload every 3-4 days. A lot of other reactors upload once a week at best, and often much longer. It takes time to edit and upload these in addition, so I appreciate this channel very much. It’s nice in 2022 to find someone who has t seen this show yet, is seemingly truly interested in it, and upload frequently.
I've seen this series at least a dozen times. Watching reactions makes me want to watch it again. It is awesome watching peoples reactions to the amazing characters' story arcs.
Theon is such a sad character. He didn’t feel like he belonged anywhere. He was a well treated hostage at Winterfell, but a hostage nonetheless. He wasn’t raised in the ways of the Iron Islands so their ways were foreign to him. Robb might have been the only one to think of and treat him like a brother. I don’t recall Robb treating Theon different to Jon. It’s just sad how alone theon must feel, even though we as viewers know he wasn’t alone as long as he stayed loyal to Robb
The wildling girl is actually pretty ingenious in her tactics -- she is aware that Jon has a moral problem with killing a fighter who has surrendered, and even more so that it is a young woman. In his world, the women don't fight. So, she is keeping him in a state of confusion so that he cannot resolve his moral dilemma by killing her. As long as she keeps talking and introducing uncertainty and potential benefits for him (shelter, warmth, sex, being accepted by Mance Rayder), she is keeping him mentally and emotionally off-balance. It's a survival tactic. Plus, it's fun messing with him.

Every time I hear Bran being hysterical I cry. It's so hard to handle hearing a child being so desperate but not being able to do anything about it. I felt the same way about Sansa when Ned got killed.

God that scene with Theon and Ser Rodrik gets to me every time. The music, the children crying and screaming for him to stop in the background, Theon’s face…Alfie Allen’s acting in GoT is one of my favorites in any show.
the little things Asha does in this season are some of my favorite in entire show, the loyalty she shows, is incredible. Protecting the Stark boys like her own. Tear up to this day.

Theon used Torren square to draw out most of the remaining troops guarding Winterfell as a distraction, with the thinking that it will be a win his father and sister would respect.
The man that Theon executed in the beginning is Rodrik Cassel, the Winterfell master-at-arms. He trained all of the Stark children. He even trained Jon Snow and Theon himself. If he's the reason Jon Snow is so good with a blade you should expect him to go out like a badass.
Execution by beheading using a normal sword is always going to be a 2-3 swing affair, unless the steel is very strong, very heavy, and/or very sharp. That's why Ned Stark used Ice, the Valerian Steel Greatsword (Valerian Steel is very strong and keeps an edge) and why real life executioners used heavy axes.
@@mellertid as far as executions go, I'd not complain about the guillotine. It stacks up well against "modern" methods in terms, on the "client" side. And if you're there to watch someone die, its at least not sugar coating the affair. And you can use a shorter casket, if you're cheap.
I bet the Hound or young Robert Baratheon could’ve taken Rodrik’s head off with one swing with a relatively sharp blade… not saying your argument isn’t accurate but the strength of the one wielding the sword factors in. This scene was to ensure everybody knew Theon was not to be respected, he looks weak even when he takes the “strong” action.
@mate There is a huge difference between the typical medieval sword and swords of today. This is something that has been spoken of many times by historians and weaponsmiths and weapons experts, and even described by original historical accounts. The average sword made today is much sharper and more capable than the average medieval era sword.
I absolutely LOVE how much Pudgey cares about all this--seeing her emotional reaction for Theon's downfall shows how much she really feels empathy for the characters/hopes for them to do the right thing

There's a lot of really interesting minor houses too that we only get snippets of in the series.. But they're also appearing in HoTD, like House Blackwood and House Manderly
Theon's situation is an extreme case of culture clash where Theon doesn't know how his own people work. He's been raised in the honour-culture of the Starks, in the chivalric and knightly codes of conduct related to the Seven Kingdoms where duty and blood-based authority is everything. But he's a native of the Iron Islands (basically the pirate republic of Nassau) who stand outside the cultural sphere of Westeros, with a people who only value strength and only follow you for as long as you prove yourself ruthless and capable. We see Theon trying to apply the Northern standards he was raised with unto his Iron Islanders but they of course, reject it and demand of him to act in accordance with their ways "paying the iron price". If he does not, he's one wrong word away from being mutinied against and then all support in his homeland is gone as his base of supporters who do follow him solely based on him being their prince is very small. Theon being brought up in the customs of the North was Ned's secret plan all along, that he might one day return to the Iron Islands and help integrate them into the conduct of the Seven Kingdoms as to put an end to their reaving and marauding traditions.
See I don't think that. Why would he sit on this info & not immediately act on it when he was away from Tywin? That just doesn't go with the Littlefinger we know. Arya would be a HUGE asset for him. I always took that scene as he ultimately didn't recognize her.
Littlefinger always plays the long game. Who benefits most from immediately knowing that Arya is alive and in Harrenhal? Not Littlefinger. He also knows he can’t manage her like he can manipulate Sansa. So he put that knowledge up under his hat for later.
No. Absolutely not. Littlefinger would have immediately sold out Arya to gain some favor with Tywin. He would never allow her to remain anonymous knowing that her secret could be revealed any moment, which would condemn him for his silence. He thought she looked familiar but dismissed it because in his eyes he was looking at just a commoner.
it is not because the sword is not valyrian steel, it is because Theon is weak and has no conviction in his actions and thus he cant cut through cleanly and he ends up hacking, it reflects his character as a man
It is also because ceremonial sword for executions and fighting longsword are not the same. Thinking he would cut head clean with longsword with this stance and position of the executed? Impossible
Well, it's also not the proper sword for beheadings. One would normally use a heavier and sharper sword than this. In real life beheadings often took multiple strikes unless using a particularly heavy and sharp executioners armament, unlike how tv shows and films tend to portray them.
@15:50, It has nothing to do with Valyrian steel. Chopping someone clean is a skill (in this world) and depends on the wielder. Theon's failure at getting a clean beheading is a metaphor to his downfall. He is no longer a Stark.
I mean in real life beheadings were rarely a 1 strike thing. Medievall historians, actual historical accounts, and swordsmiths have spoken about this before. I agree its a metaphor for his downfall, but he also was not using a good sword for this job. It was not suitable heavy (executioners sword) or sufficiently sharp, and his stance was also terrible. So in a roundabout way, his valyrian steel sword was definitely a factor in the clean cut, compared to a normal sword the general soldier would carry around.

You guys have some of the best content on RUclips. You have a lot of the same thoughts/ideas/theories as most of us did when we first watched GoT. I remember falling down the conspiracy rabbit holes after season 6. I still watch conspiracy videos and Winds of Winter probably wont come out anytime soon
It irks me a bit when people claim the Starks treated Theon oh so well. True, he was fed, clothed and even trained in combat according to his social status. But also, we literally saw Rob being a complete ungrateful shit to him just a season ago - and that's Rob, the only Stark he was actually close with. Not saying it absolves Theon for his treachery, but let us call things as they are
He WAS treated well according to the cultural standards and expectations for someone in his position. Most people in his position in Westeros are treated far worse.

@@Orimthekeyacolite Rob was angry at Theon because Theon fired an arrow within a few inches of Bran. It was a tough situation where Theon saved Bran's life, but also threatened his life at the same time. Rob wouldn't have taken the same chance. However, Theon might have been right since Bran might have been dead otherwise.

There's also great parallels with the Jon, Theon, and Robb storylines - Jon and Robb both being "tempted" by women, and Jon and Theon demonstrating the difference between real strength (Jon's code won't let him execute Ygritte) and cowardice (Theon enacting false "strength" by executing Ser Rodrik). Btw, the actors who play Jon and Ygritte are now married with a son.
Jon, Robb, Joffrey, Sansa, Arya, Daenerys, Sam etc. etc. GoT was all of them having their first professional jobs. And theyre all so amazing.
And it was very special for Jon as he married his "wildling" in real life! He'd have never met her if not for GoT! 🤗 I saw a video of him singing "Wild Thing" to her but he changed it to "Wildling". It was so cute. 😊❤

I love how Ned's words come into reality here with Jon and Ygritte.
The scene with Theon not being able to behead Ser Rodrik cleanly is in part because he was using the wrong sword, but more importantly, it was done this way to show that Theon is weak and is not a leader. You can see it in other scenes as well, Theon basically seems to have taken Winterfell from the Starks just so he could say that he did it, that he was finally better than them, but these were people he'd grown up with, so he didn't want to hurt anyone. He's constantly getting talked into it by other members of the Ironborn because he's essentially as insubstantial as a leaf, and will blow in the direction of the person with the strongest breath.
There's also a contrast between Theon killing Ser Rodrick and botching the execution, and Jon Snow refusing to behead an innocent--from Jon's moral code--girl.

Alfie Allen's acting after he decapitated Rodrick is incredible. You can totally see the guy who pushed himself too far and he is torn between "What have I done ?" and "Did I do it right ?"
Theon is definitely conflicted, but he not only wants to do well by his father for acceptance, but his sister's taunting probably pushed him into wanting to outdo her.
His sister definitely emasculates him with her words and he most certainly feels like he has to prove himself.

Dagmer and Theon's plan that you didn't quite get last episode was to send the bulk of their forces to attack Torrhen's Square, causing the Starks to send their men there to help and leave Winterfell unguarded for Theon's small force to take over.

It's not an anthropological study. Explaining things that were not meant to be missed makes future reactions better not worse.

Theon Greyjoy is a really fascinating character both in the show and the books. He obviously makes some bad decisions, but if you put yourself in his place you can kind of understand why he does so to an extent -- he was really put into a difficult situation given his family and life circumstances and that conflict makes him compelling. And I honestly think Alfie Allen's performance as Theon is one of the best and most underappreciated in the whole series.
Yeah but his internal thoughts in his POV in the books just make him worse. Like, his very first POV (the only one I've read so far) shows that the answer to Bran's "Did you hate us the whole time?" is actually "Yes." And the way he treats that poor girl... ick.

If someone killed your family members and then took you away from your home, I think you would hate them too. Even if they were nice to you.

@@ThatsOk83also, if you read from theon's pov you find that life with the Starks wasn't amazing at all. Catelyn never liked him, he didn't get along with Jon. Was close with rob but the other kids are to young. Sansa is like 11 (and isn't nice to theon or Jon at all). Rob is 13 and theon is 19. He was scared shitless of ned who would sometimes be nice and at other times be cold and distant probably because he reminded himself of having to kill theon if balon rebelled and all the servants treated him worse then Jon because everyone in the seven kingdoms despises the iron born.
I maintain that Theon’s most critical mistake was his decision to be prince of winterfell and not just capture the stark boys and retreat back to the iron islands.

Agreed. It’s nice to have a new upload every 3-4 days. A lot of other reactors upload once a week at best, and often much longer. It takes time to edit and upload these in addition, so I appreciate this channel very much. It’s nice in 2022 to find someone who has t seen this show yet, is seemingly truly interested in it, and upload frequently.
It always found it amusing that in all the shots of the far North there are no trees visible for miles yet they always have wood for fires.

I've seen this series at least a dozen times. Watching reactions makes me want to watch it again. It is awesome watching peoples reactions to the amazing characters' story arcs.
Theon is such a sad character. He didn’t feel like he belonged anywhere. He was a well treated hostage at Winterfell, but a hostage nonetheless. He wasn’t raised in the ways of the Iron Islands so their ways were foreign to him. Robb might have been the only one to think of and treat him like a brother. I don’t recall Robb treating Theon different to Jon. It’s just sad how alone theon must feel, even though we as viewers know he wasn’t alone as long as he stayed loyal to Robb
Robb was the only one to treat Theon like family. Even Ned was said to be very emotionally distant from Theon

The wildling girl is actually pretty ingenious in her tactics -- she is aware that Jon has a moral problem with killing a fighter who has surrendered, and even more so that it is a young woman. In his world, the women don't fight. So, she is keeping him in a state of confusion so that he cannot resolve his moral dilemma by killing her. As long as she keeps talking and introducing uncertainty and potential benefits for him (shelter, warmth, sex, being accepted by Mance Rayder), she is keeping him mentally and emotionally off-balance. It's a survival tactic. Plus, it's fun messing with him.

Every time I hear Bran being hysterical I cry. It's so hard to handle hearing a child being so desperate but not being able to do anything about it. I felt the same way about Sansa when Ned got killed.
Discussion on favorite houses was fun. Personally my favorite is the Tyrells because of Margaery Tyrell (Renly's wife) and another cool Tyrell character you'll meet later :) 🏵

God that scene with Theon and Ser Rodrik gets to me every time. The music, the children crying and screaming for him to stop in the background, Theon’s face…Alfie Allen’s acting in GoT is one of my favorites in any show.
the little things Asha does in this season are some of my favorite in entire show, the loyalty she shows, is incredible. Protecting the Stark boys like her own. Tear up to this day.

Theon used Torren square to draw out most of the remaining troops guarding Winterfell as a distraction, with the thinking that it will be a win his father and sister would respect.
The man that Theon executed in the beginning is Rodrik Cassel, the Winterfell master-at-arms. He trained all of the Stark children. He even trained Jon Snow and Theon himself. If he's the reason Jon Snow is so good with a blade you should expect him to go out like a badass.
Jon is supposed to be nothing special with a blade in the books. He just had actual training compared to the others at the wall.

Execution by beheading using a normal sword is always going to be a 2-3 swing affair, unless the steel is very strong, very heavy, and/or very sharp. That's why Ned Stark used Ice, the Valerian Steel Greatsword (Valerian Steel is very strong and keeps an edge) and why real life executioners used heavy axes.
Even axes often made a mess, hence the guillotine. Fun fact, in France such a beheading was done as recently as 1977!
@@mellertid as far as executions go, I'd not complain about the guillotine. It stacks up well against "modern" methods in terms, on the "client" side. And if you're there to watch someone die, its at least not sugar coating the affair. And you can use a shorter casket, if you're cheap.
I bet the Hound or young Robert Baratheon could’ve taken Rodrik’s head off with one swing with a relatively sharp blade… not saying your argument isn’t accurate but the strength of the one wielding the sword factors in. This scene was to ensure everybody knew Theon was not to be respected, he looks weak even when he takes the “strong” action.
I'm glad you made this point. Modern television and movies have given a wildly accurate understanding of beheadings.
@mate There is a huge difference between the typical medieval sword and swords of today. This is something that has been spoken of many times by historians and weaponsmiths and weapons experts, and even described by original historical accounts. The average sword made today is much sharper and more capable than the average medieval era sword.

Theon's situation is an extreme case of culture clash where Theon doesn't know how his own people work. He's been raised in the honour-culture of the Starks, in the chivalric and knightly codes of conduct related to the Seven Kingdoms where duty and blood-based authority is everything. But he's a native of the Iron Islands (basically the pirate republic of Nassau) who stand outside the cultural sphere of Westeros, with a people who only value strength and only follow you for as long as you prove yourself ruthless and capable. We see Theon trying to apply the Northern standards he was raised with unto his Iron Islanders but they of course, reject it and demand of him to act in accordance with their ways "paying the iron price". If he does not, he's one wrong word away from being mutinied against and then all support in his homeland is gone as his base of supporters who do follow him solely based on him being their prince is very small. Theon being brought up in the customs of the North was Ned's secret plan all along, that he might one day return to the Iron Islands and help integrate them into the conduct of the Seven Kingdoms as to put an end to their reaving and marauding traditions.
Joffery is the mad king all over again. Killing anyone for anything at a whim.

See I don't think that. Why would he sit on this info & not immediately act on it when he was away from Tywin? That just doesn't go with the Littlefinger we know. Arya would be a HUGE asset for him. I always took that scene as he ultimately didn't recognize her.
Littlefinger always plays the long game. Who benefits most from immediately knowing that Arya is alive and in Harrenhal? Not Littlefinger. He also knows he can’t manage her like he can manipulate Sansa. So he put that knowledge up under his hat for later.
No. Absolutely not. Littlefinger would have immediately sold out Arya to gain some favor with Tywin. He would never allow her to remain anonymous knowing that her secret could be revealed any moment, which would condemn him for his silence. He thought she looked familiar but dismissed it because in his eyes he was looking at just a commoner.

it is not because the sword is not valyrian steel, it is because Theon is weak and has no conviction in his actions and thus he cant cut through cleanly and he ends up hacking, it reflects his character as a man
It is also because ceremonial sword for executions and fighting longsword are not the same. Thinking he would cut head clean with longsword with this stance and position of the executed? Impossible
Well, it's also not the proper sword for beheadings. One would normally use a heavier and sharper sword than this. In real life beheadings often took multiple strikes unless using a particularly heavy and sharp executioners armament, unlike how tv shows and films tend to portray them.

@15:50, It has nothing to do with Valyrian steel. Chopping someone clean is a skill (in this world) and depends on the wielder. Theon's failure at getting a clean beheading is a metaphor to his downfall. He is no longer a Stark.
I mean in real life beheadings were rarely a 1 strike thing. Medievall historians, actual historical accounts, and swordsmiths have spoken about this before. I agree its a metaphor for his downfall, but he also was not using a good sword for this job. It was not suitable heavy (executioners sword) or sufficiently sharp, and his stance was also terrible. So in a roundabout way, his valyrian steel sword was definitely a factor in the clean cut, compared to a normal sword the general soldier would carry around.

It irks me a bit when people claim the Starks treated Theon oh so well. True, he was fed, clothed and even trained in combat according to his social status. But also, we literally saw Rob being a complete ungrateful shit to him just a season ago - and that's Rob, the only Stark he was actually close with. Not saying it absolves Theon for his treachery, but let us call things as they are
He WAS treated well according to the cultural standards and expectations for someone in his position. Most people in his position in Westeros are treated far worse.

It was a tough situation where Theon saved Bran's life, but also threatened his life at the same time. Rob wouldn't have taken the same chance. However, Theon might have been right since Bran might have been dead otherwise.
