- In episode 11 of how to build a house by yourself I install the block and beam suspended floor.
I show the complete process of fitting a pre stressed concrete block and beam floor system.
DPC gets explained and shown how to fit under the beams.
All of this gets done by one guy :D

Love that attitude. Do the job alone, it may take longer but the satisfaction can't be topped.
BLWP . What a god forsaken job block n beam Is . Well done for getting it done solo ! The new B& B floors have 200 + mm polystyrene block in between now , nice and toasty warm 👌🏼.
I must say you make a lovely Ripley 😙😏🤣. 🧱👍🏼
More videos i watch the more i wished i was there to help you and gain from your knowledge, great job!
Absolutely fascinating, your a keeper Rodian.Well done in doing it yourself an inspiration to may young people.
Thank you Maria 👍🏻😁
I am in shock you did all that on your own crazy .could of hurt yourself but at the same time i admire your grit and determination fair play great job .
Justin brickright 👍
That was hell of a job, good work.
Epic work mate, thats some heavy manual work, well done.
Hie long can that slurry be exposed to the outsode elements before the shell is built.
Im doing my own build extension so any advise wouild be helpful.
Hi Rodian I started watching your videos when you completed the fireplace. I have been watching a lot of your videos but recently just started looking back to the start of your house build. I have dreamt of building my own house for years and seeing these in depth videos are very enjoyable and there is great information being at each stage of the build. I just finished my level 2 and I'm currently applying for my first ever bricklaying job. I'm so excited and passionate about bricklaying and the possibility of moving to Australia or New Zealand in the near future is really appealing to me mainly because of the weather and the adventure. I want to save money over the next few years so I can start building houses myself and turn it into a business but obviously I need experience first and I know its going to be hard but I'm determined and I want to achieve my dream. If you have any advice on my journey I would appreciate it very much! I want to say a big congratulations on your house you must be very proud! All those sweat and tears gone in to that house and your able to admire it everyday and share it with the people you love. I'm loving your content mate keep up the great work!
Quality work and quality nod to Aliens!!!
Well done Rodian , know exactly how you feel , doing this on your own and why .Started my similar own build last October ,now upto DPC but using Tetris floor seemed easier
Its definitely a big commitment. Learnt so much along the way. Good luck with the rest of your build!!
Crazy man. I gave myself a hernia lifting them floor beams on my own in my younger days
Fair play to you though, keeping costs down👍
Hahahahaha
best episode yet love tge timelapse .so satisfying
great video and the one man show
Cheers Tim 😁👍🏻
Haha, I know every word to Aliens lol. Not seen it in years either. Gonna have to watch it now
Great job doing all that yourself. 👍
Ha ha love the aliens reference 😂😂 great video.loving watching the progress
Cool when I did mine I left a gap in the wall and got the machine through on some floor place a lot easier lol did it on me own like you your doing a excellent job
🤔 Good idea! It helped a lot using the machine to get the beams at least part of the way. Those suckers are so damn heavy!! Would deffo get an extra set of hands next time
I started watching this playlist and can't stop... Excellent!
Would it be advantageous to lay down a vapour barrier on the ground below to prevent moisture under the floor, for your climate?
Also. you could use a small bottle jack to lift the beams for you when installing the damp banding or lifting anything, easily. I have been working alone all my life; a couple of small 2 ton bottle jacks, 2 scissors jacks and wood blocks in 2 milk crates are an important kit in my tool collection.
Interesting addition to a tool kit. There will be a gas membrane spanning the whole floor just before the floor screed goes down. That will stop any moisture getting in
Top man this is what I do for a living it's hard work
Definitely a hard job! Kudos to you buddy
brilliant mate laughed my ******* off Your dad must have been a Scouser!!
Hello Fella well done seen most of your clips one question what insurance did you get to cover your own works on your own sight I’m doing what you’ve done by myself and I cannot seem to find insurance?
Great idea. Will this work to raise a 6m x 3m patio up by about 350mm?
Thanks for the video. Brave man to complete all that by yourself. What is the thickness of the brick slips.
If memory serves me well I think they were around 40mm ish.
@@RodianBuilds Thanks for the reply, most people don't bother. Hope your house building went well.
It's going well 😁👍🏻 I do my best to reply to everyone
Hi, how do you go about putting in the mains water? Do u put a duct in under the block and beam?
Thank you so much this was very helpful and motivating
On hell of a heavy job
Great effort mate
Cheers Jay 👍🏻😁
I admire your can do attitude you will go far in life you will have success but mind your back I’m serious about that.
good vid, well explained when compared to most vids on this subject
Cheers buddy 😁👍🏻
What are the beams for? Is it suspended floor? Air flow?thanks and fair play to you
just found your channel great stuff, in regards to dpc under floor beams maybe a trolly jack may have helped?
That would have helped for sure 🤣
Nice video mate.You just earned a sub.👍
Cheers buddy, welcome to the channel. Glad to hear you're enjoying the videos🤙🏼🧱
Top job dude👍 admire your efforts what nm blocks did you use
If ever you do this again, 3 small scaffold poles, so you can roll them on your first section.😉
NICE! That was very awkward trying to roll out a full roll. Cheers for the tip 👍
Looks great but too hard on your own I’ve done roofing on my own bumping up on ladders hard work ok while you’re young
Fucking fair lad my other half does this for a living and says it’s a killer. Fair play to all the tradies out there
you good man, why do you think you dont have enough subscribers.
Cheers bud👍🏻😁 I've never paid too much attention to my subscriber count, I'm super appreciative of everyone who has taken the time to subscribe and watch my videos no matter how many there are 😁
Its a good job your not afraid of a bit of hard graft
Yeah, dont mind a bit of graft. Definitely get me a labourer next time🤣🤣
I feel like you were using your back for some of them. I know you probably know this but a reminder doesn't hurt. Be careful about your back and body. You use it for the rest of your life ;) great video
if a building is 7800 long x 4200 wide would you need 15 beams?
Small wheeled bogie to move things around , the wheel was invented a long time ago .Use it
4:47 wow.. 💪🏻
Why do you usually work alone? And how long does it usually take you to finish projects? Love your stuff by the way. Masonry Apprentice in Florida USA
I don't normally work alone. This is the first project I've done solo. Bit of a bucket list thing I wanted to see if I could do
I would try a Polystyrene floor next time, better insulation and 30% faster, and lighter on the back.
Hey, Riple- er, I mean Rodian.. Thanks for doing your back in for us :)Oh, er, yeah... You know that Bay 12 Loader that you showed off in earlier? Well, they want it back...
🤣🤣
Silly Questian, but those beams look like concrete?
why did you not use EPS foam instead of those blocks ?
Wave rock was an accident waiting to happen to be honest, luckily the collapse didn't cause damage to the neighbours property, which is quite close to the dug out part.
Good effort
Cheers Gary 😁👍🏻
I think you should have had a couple of cheap labours to help with the beams mate to save your energy
isn't it easier to make a pluming, insulation, steel rebar, rough electrical and heating floor at once and pour concrete on top ?
I bet these floor beam cost same as ordering concrete for whole floors
I know things are done differently in different parts of world, just wondering.
And dont you use insulation under floors in england ?
P.S I like your videos, kinda have same dream, seing you doing this alone is really encouraging
All the pipes, insulation etc will be put on top of the beams and then screeded over as per the architect's drawings. Glad to hear you're enjoying the videos and hope you get to live your dreams 👍🏻😁
Yeah seems overly complicated compared to pouring a footer and forming walls, then spanning the crawlspace with either lumber or even these concrete beams, but it's his project so he can do it his way.
love the music
What where the longest beams ?
why did the company not sling the beams onto the correct walls. This is standard practice by those companies. You will put your back out and have lasting damage messing about on your own. Get another pair of hand for the heavy work. Don't forget your BT and Electric ducts as well.
is block and beam cheaper than a slab?
No more expensive
Not a builder so sorry if I say something daft .why did you put brick slips in the ends and not just put a beam on the dpm
I didn't know Adam Lallana was a builder also.
definitely would have been easier and better to do an insulated heated slab. That looks very strong but i sure don't like open unfinished ground underneath.
I agree with you. Unfortunately theres an old land fill site on the other side of the road and the council needed certain gas preventions in place and a solid slab would have be a lot more work and money. The lock and beam was the easier cheaper way to do it.
Cant see dpc below beams?
kerry barnes have you even bothered to watch the video before making a dumb comment ? muppet 🤔
Masons knot make quick works of beams check load ratings first before lifting
Cheera for the tip, I'll look into it. Never heard of a masons knot
Where the damp corse under the beams then
You have forgotten the damp membrane under the beams.
Well done mate, seems like an awful lot of hard graft.. Why did you decide to do B&B floor in stead of a concrete slab foundation (which would be simpler to complete by yourself if you hired a mixer truck?)
Great video nonetheless champ!
There were a few conversations with the architect in regards to the slab. Apparently there is risk of gas penetration so having a solid slab would have been a lot more hard work. Would have needed a specific sub base, not hard core and sand, which was a bit pricy and a ball ache to fit. Also adding vents in the slab. We went with the beams because it was an easier solution. And man were those beams heavy to lift on my own!!!! Ha ha. Wont be doing that again without help 🤣🤣
Rodian Montague if there worried about gas. Shouldn’t you have a gas blanket underneath
Theres a gas barrier going over the top of the block and beam floor before the floor gets insulated and screeded 👍🏻
Rodian Montague I did a block beam floor over a exciting land fill. Had to be piled deep and gas blanketed
Rather you than me buddy 🤣 They must have been deeeeeeeeep piles?!
you shoud have dpc under them beams cant see any
Why would you do that?
Beans aren't connected with anything; dangerous if it collapses.
Serious question......are you a proper money saver? You work alone all the time lol
I try to cut as many costs as I can, without losing quality. I dont always work alone but on this house I wanted to see if I could do it
Rodian Montague fukin fair play man 💪🏻
Don't do that again mate. Its alright until you pull something in your back and it comes back to haunt you later. You will und up with a hernia, piles or a fcuked back. Best to get a couple of donkeys in to do the hard work 👌
You're a grafter, I'll give you that, but I wouldn't have attempted doing that on my own, no fucking way. But as awkward as it looked lifting those beams on your own to get the DPC under, surely you must have had a car jack at hand, that would have saved a lot of chew, and you wouldn't have been taking your balls home in a barrow either lol...but why no helper with you??
I didnt have a helper because I'm stubborn and wanted to do it myself......wont be doing that again 🤣🤣
hmm not really by yourself...
