  • Welcome Home (Sanitarium) by Metallica of Master of Puppets
    Lyrics:
Welcome to where time stands still
No one leaves and no one will
Moon is full, never seems to change
    Just labeled mentally deranged
Dream the same thing every night
I see our freedom in my sight
No locked doors, no windows barred
No things to make my brain seem scarred
Sleep, my friend, and you will see
    That dream is my reality
They keep me locked up in this cage
Can't they see it's why my brain says "rage"
    Sanitarium, leave me be
    Sanitarium, just leave me alone
Build my fear of what's out there
    Cannot breathe the open air
    Whisper things into my brain
    Assuring me that I'm insane
They think our heads are in their hands
But violent use brings violent plans
Keep him tied, it makes him well
He's getting better, can't you tell?
No more can they keep us in
Listen, damn it, we will win
They see it right, they see it well
But they think this saves us from our hell
    Sanitarium, leave me be
    Sanitarium, just leave me alone
    Sanitarium
    Just leave me alone
    Fear of living on
    Natives getting restless now
    Mutiny in the air
    Got some death to do
    Mirror stares back hard
kill is such a friendly word
    seems the only way
    for reaching out again

This is the Metallica song that I can relate to the most to because as a child my adopted mother who couldn't handle the responsibility of being a parent kept putting me into mental hospitals in a failed attempt to get me committed so she could get a check off me. There were moments in my childhood where I questioned the reality of what was happening to me. Back in the 80's it was legal to do that to your kids. Thank God the insurance ran out in 1993.

My father went to prison when I was young, he came back when I graduated Highschool. He's not the same, I believe he's still stuck there mentally, drinking everyday and I want him to be free, even when he's already a free man. This song reminds me of his struggle. As a kid, I spent a lot of time locked up in various mental health facilities, and I remember feeling like this song spoke of how I was feeling. Many years, decades, have passed, yet this song still speaks to me, and every time I hear it, I'm taken back to those days. I doubt I'll ever escape that past, none of my attempts have ever been successful. I think some people are just not meant for this world.

Maybe the greatest songs are the ones that are most relatable. Battling severe depression because of Covid, this song seems to tell my story, it seems to mirror my life and often it feels like it mirrors my future. Cliff Burton gave Metallica a level of spiritual energy that not many bands could ever have, and every time I listen to their first three albums, I feel the presence of an angel. He’s a key reason for why many people consider this album to be one of the greatest ever. His legacy should never be foreshadowed. Sorry for the long paragraph.

this song is one of the most important songs ever written in my opinion. Especially for ANYONE struggling with any sort of mental battle that most people cant understand. this song has always connected to me since I was a kid and the meaning of it has only got stronger as I have aged. I only wish more people would listen to this now a days, and I mean really LISTEN to it since everyone is so keen on mental health, instead of the the garbage music that comes out today.

chusss Music I love Metallica, the good, bad and the wah. But back in the day, they were raw, primal and driven to make perfect songs. They made albums where you play the whole album, and they made several like that. The first 5, I play the whole thing. I'm pretty sure I don't personally listen to any other bands that I can say that about. I'm about the same age as these guys, I was introduced to them after Ride The Lightning by my then boyfriend. I have not stopped listening to them since. I was lucky enough to see them 4x back in the late 80's and early 90's. No matter how many times I listen to them, I never get tired of it. 🤘❤🤘

This song has so much significance to me, as I'm sure you all do. But my little brother was diagnosed with schizophrenia at 16 years old, me being only a year older. I've lived with this. The struggling pain of seeing him trying to deal. The lyric, "keep him tired, it makes him well, he's getting better can't you tell". Seeing my brother drugged, always kept a hole in my heart. But this song always got me through. And that's why I fucking love Metallica.

4:50 on I feel like musically the repetitive riff represents the struggle of trying to move on but being or feeling trapped, then with the solo finally being victorious and breaking free and running away from the thing that kept you down.

I grew up to Metallica. My dad was and still is an old school rocker. During elementary when kids were singing and listening to the new stuff (1989) I was jamming metallica. They all thought I was weird but nah, I don't regret any bit of it. I was jamming metallica, Ozzy, Seger and many others
