  • Photographer and Reviewer Dustin Abbott takes a detailed look at the dimensions, features, and handling of the new Zeiss Milvus Planar T* 1.4/85mm lens. The Milvus 85mm f/1.4 represents a far more attainable excellence when compared with the Otus 85mm f/1.4 - a lens Dustin directly compares the Milvus to. I got mine for my D810 the first week they were released and I'm glad you got your hands on it as well. I call mine my Baby Otus. lol

    Can't wait for other parts of that review. It's very interesting for me how Milvus compares to Otus, as I know how good Otus is.

      +Mateusz M The other pieces should follow pretty closely.

      +Dustin Abbott Yes, it will definitely pop up on my fed haha :) I saw Your photos with this lens and they look great. I have only once concern about Milvus. Otus is known from its premium image quality, and I saw on one of the Canon forums photograph taken with Milvus 85 at f/1.4 in to the sun, and purple fringing was quite visible. That really made me worry about Milvus.

      Hmm, that's odd, as CA is actually really, really low on this lens.

      +Dustin Abbott well Dustin, that is what I really want to find out, but there was not really much if any quality and reliable review on the net. So I am really glad You came up with this review. I have feeling that many photographers after Otus family was introduced, they are just not interested in Milvus line.

    A couple of things that is worth mentioning. With the Nikon mount 85mm Milvus has more of a gap between the lens and the hand grip due to the aperture ring. Also the Milvus (similar to the Otus) has an improved lens cap over older Zeiss lenses, which used to be awful.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  9 лет назад

      +Michael Laing I'm glad to hear that about the Nikon mount. I've definitely noted in previous reviews the difference in the new caps - you are absolutely right; they were terrible, particularly when compared to the craftsmanship of the rest of the lens.

    • @MichaelLaing71
      @MichaelLaing71 9 лет назад

      The downside with the aperture ring on the Nikon is that it is very close to the body and a nuisance to get at.
      I am still trying to work out why Zeiss placed the rubber grip, so far down the barrel, it looks like they did it to keep it similar to other lenses in the Milvus line. For me it would have been more to have 85mm and 100mm Milvus to have the rubber ring half way up hte barrel.
      Good review, looking forward to seeing the second half.

    When the Otus pricing was announced, the Euro- US Dollar exchange rate was much worse than it is now. For instance the last time I checked, the 55mm Otus should be more like $3,200 not $4k. I hope Zeiss releases some rebates to offset the exchange rate difference. I'd rather not spend $800+ more than the lens is worth just because our dollar was weak when they announced pricing.

      +Photo314159 I have found that lens prices are very volatile in a lot of regions right now. The price of the new Tamron SP primes, for example, are wildly different market to market.

    Yes! Finally, I read the title wrong (I thought it was a Sony proprietary lens) and imagine how happy I am right now!
    You do a hell of a job @dustinabbot and I always check your reviews even though I do not plan to buy most lenses. This is on my list though!

      Dustin Abbott There you go =) Remember we had a conversation on your channel about this line of lenses a while back?
      Will you review the other ones as well? Will you make more vids about this one?
      Anyway, this lens makes so much sense, it would be a mistake not to have it in ones bag!

      I would definitely like to review the 50mm f/1.4 Milvus as it is the other lens to have new optics. I plan to have two more vids on this one - a detailed image quality and bokeh breakdown along with a final review.

      Dustin Abbott Super! Milvus seems to be a real contender this year in multiple categories.
      Kinda like the Art-series.
      Looking forward to the other videos =)

    Great detailed video. I've handled a few milvus lenses myself and can attest that they look darn good and handle perfect.
    I suggest comparing this lens to the more modest Canon 85 1.8 usm on the way both lenses render snow, leaves and trees. Seems the milvus 85 is trying very hard to follow the same resolution centric philosophy as the more recent Sony G-Master lenses.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  9 лет назад

      +Yannick Khong I'm not sure I follow. I seriously doubt that too many people will be cross-shopping the Canon 85mm f/1.8 with the Milvus 85.

    • @YannickKhong
      @YannickKhong 9 лет назад +1

      Dustin Abbott what about cross-shopping the 85Lii and the Milvus then?

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  9 лет назад +1

      +Yannick Khong That's far more likely. I'm not going to have a chance to do a head to head, though, as the Milvus returns to Zeiss in another week and a half.

      Dustin Abbott Hi dustin, I was talking more about comparing lens micro-contrast, but such a practice differs from your method of lens review (sharpness, aberration, vignetting and bokeh). It's all good man, just two ways of looking at things.
      On micro-contrast:

    Thank u for this review, I was excited to buy this lens but I've seen a review saying that the paint on this lens is average and it peels of leaving it in bad cosmetic shape, can I know your opinion plz!

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  9 лет назад

      +Walid Hoyek Call me skeptical. I saw no such evidence of that and have never heard of a Zeiss lens having poor construction.

      +Dustin Abbott I believe you but still I can send u the link of the video if u like, I was watching your other video just now about its abilities, I'm an independent film director and looking for a new set of lenses, what made me desire the Zeiss lenses is when I watched your review on the Zeiss otus 85mm and the outcome result, I was obsessed with it, unfortunately I'm in a short budget so would you encourage me to buy a set of Zeiss milvus or should I look towards another brand!

    • @DustinAbbottTWI

      I believe enough in the Milvus that I'm probably going to add it to my own kit.

      +Dustin Abbott my draw back is the vignetting that it does which is a real problem to remove in video, so sad with all this beauty to have this on the negative side, would u plz recomend me a 50mm and a 85mm lens, i use a canin 5d3 and waiting for my new red raven. hope im not taking much of your time and also thank u again, love your pictures, u have a very elegant classy eye.

      You might want to wait for the new Tamron 85mm f/1.8. The Tamron primes so far have done well with vignette. Perhaps this will do the same. It comes out in early April.

    Hi Master! Hi! Which adapter do you use on Nikon Milvus for Sony?

    it's there a Sony option?

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  9 лет назад

      +shadowravyn2011 Interestingly, no. Zeiss is basically promoting using it on Sony cameras via an adapter (which wouldn't make any difference in operation but the lens would obviously be a bit longer due to the adapter.

    Haha, this Zeiss or Tamron SP85?

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  8 лет назад

      Wow, I have to say that this is a tough one. Zeiss advantages: build, image quality (slight), f/1.4. Tamron advantages: AF, VC, price. I don't think there is a wrong choice...what do you need more?

    • @bitmastermac
      @bitmastermac 8 лет назад +1

      +Dustin Abbott Thanks; my view also. I have the 50 1.4 milvus (and 50 makro planar and tamron 45 sp/VC) and 100 makro planar, using either Zeiss for portraits. The 100MP is unforgiving to skin. I used an 85 milvus for a short time and I like it, but it's not my preferred focal length for much (either is 35mm). I got the 85 sp/VC (your influence!) and found no faults except it's 1.8 and the milvus is a silkier image by a hair. Since the 85 for me is used 90% on the street for a prime between a 50 and 200,, I'm diggin the AF and VC. If I shot more in the studio with this length, I might go for the Milvus, but so far I'm keeping the tamron. Same thing happened with a 35 Art I bought to evaluate, then didn't bother to return. Not my focal length anymore but I just can't quite sell it yet.
      What I was really looking for was a 90-105mm w/AF but nothing is better or a different FL than what I have. I'm remembering how to use a very short tele and have been liking the tamron more every day.

    No,no,no :(
    I'm crying...on the floor...in fetus position
    The Milvus are so incredibly UGLY!!
    The form, the cheap satin finish, the grey rubber, the neon blue ring, the blue logo. Vomit inducing.
    The only lenses I own are Zeiss. So I never get a new one again?
    Please I want to weak up from this nightmare :( :(

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  9 лет назад +1

      +F To That seems a little extreme. I too liked the look of the older Zeiss lines, but I think the Otus and Milvus lines are beautiful, too. Just bigger and a bit bolder.

    • @fto3367
      @fto3367 9 лет назад

      +Dustin Abbott
      Haha. I now that my reaction was extreme ;)
      But I think Zeiss deserved it. Hopefully they are reading it and offer the new optics in the old designs. I understand that taste is highly subjective...But my personal taste is offended.
