I told my AOT friends that if they don't have some epic sad music for Armin's sacrifice, I'll be pissed. This scene, even though I already know what happens, was still very emotional and the music was perfect
As a manga reader, i found a little bit of problems with the animation at the start of the episode.
Anyway, they executed everything else perfectly, and the sacrifice scene was astonishingly emotional and well re-created.
Not even talking about how fucking deep Armin character design is, and well balanced in both fear and bravery. The fact that rationality is this character's centre made both the episode and the chapter perfect, heart-breaking and kept filling me with pride towards one of the best if not the best character in the last decade of japanese production

The best part about Armin's sacrfice is that he did it without hesitation. Both Armin and Erwin reached the same conclusion, they weren't going to fulfill their dreams, but, unlike Erwin who had to ask Levi to make the choice for him, Armin made his choice immediately and stuck to it. That's what really shows just how brave Armin was, braver than even Erwin.

But they’re both brave and strong, you gotta be honest, armin probably wouldn’t be able to persuade anyone to run towards their death for Levi to kill the beast Titan.

THANK YOU SO MUCH! i've just finished the latest episode... and oh my god.... the manga readers were right.. too much shock and twist at once.. This cover was perfect (i thought this was the actual original soundtrack). It definitely cements the emotional 'part' in this episode and keeps reminding me of the real 'hero'.. T^T instantly fav character.
AOT truly deserves its popularity. In the time between seasons I think to myself "yeah it was good but was it great?" Then I rewatch it, and remember that yes it is.

I'm a manga reader, so I know the outcome regardless, but without spoiling anything and just as a personal belief? Armin.
Erwin has always been playing a short-sighted long game. His end goal was the basement in Shiganshina; to check his father's answers and prove him right. That's not to say he was ignorant of what needed to be done for the sake of humanity, but his ultimate goal still landed him within the Walls.
Armin, on the other hand, just wanted desperately to see the world _beyond_ those Walls. His goal is the ocean; to see the vastness of the world, and he inspired others to consider what might be outside what any of them could see in front of them and want it. That extends to his comparatively unorthodox thinking. If humanity's going to continue forward, _that's_ what they need.
Both Erwin and Armin knew what needed to be done, but when it came down to it, Erwin hesitated. He didn't know whether he could give up on his dream or not, and so Levi made the choice for him. Which I am not saying is a bad thing at all -- it's still one of my favorite moments of the series, and Erwin is by far and away one of the best, and my favorite, characters. Armin, however, had the utmost faith that there were people who would see his dream through in his stead. He made the choice himself, and suffered through it without wavering until the end.
Sorry if this is a bit rambly, but to sum it up; neither of them made a "greater sacrifice" than the other, but their ability to make the sacrifices they did was different. They both gave up on their dreams, but Armin has one that can be carried forth by and inspire others. In my view, that's what's needed.

Armin is my favorite, but honestly it was definitely not the only reason I thought he should get the serum while I was reading the manga (I was more or less okay with his death if he died like this, as a hero). But I didn't see much future in Erwin's way of thinking while there's still a lot of potential in Armin. Plus, while Erwin often comes up with plans that require a lot of sacrifice, Armin usually does not. This time he sacrificed a life, but only one, his own.

The episode "Hero" was such a whiplash of emotions.
Anxiety of whether or not they would get Bertholdt and Reiner out of their titans. The unsureness of Erwin's fate. The hype and raised excitement as Levi literally obliterated the Beast Titan only to have Zeke got away. Suspicion on what Armin was planning. The literal shock and sadness to see him going out in literal flames. The whoop of victory when Mikasa blasted Reiner out. The relieved of Hanji coming back. Then ended up with the flashback of Armin and Eren first meeting.
Then silence.
Armin, you have not lost, because you did not run away
