what i love about these kinds of videos is that in a way they're like mini documentaries that show really cool aspects of different communities and cultures
I introduced the 10 step Korean skin routine to my skin care regimen about 6 months ago...and I won't ever look back.. My skin looks so much better and I get compliments all the time!
EclecticFlavor. I have been wanting to incorporate such a regime in my life but when I mention it to family or friends they think it's crazy. I don't think so at all. I think it's awesome to take care of your skin and appearance to make you feel hood and healthy :)
+Olivia Douglas I too get the comments like "omg thats too much just way too much" or "why" but I realized I had to do what was best for myself...and now people are starting to understand...my skin looks healthier and just better overall. I hope you get a good regimen in! Good luck
As a Korean living in korea, it seems to me that those girls don’t really know real Korean culture. Most young Korean women don’t dress like that; they have a style that is not as overdone as the ones shown in kpop videos. 15 skin care products is waaay to overestimated, most use 3-4, maybe 5 at most. The way this video portrays Korean women is totally exaggerated and distorted.
If this was a video on american culture, white people in another country would be dressing like kylie jenner and getting butt and lip implants but that would be an exaggeration
And I agree. Though I have been to Seoul only once, based on what I saw, young women didn't dress the way the Korean-Americans dressed in this video. As for skincare and cosmetics, I think there is some truth in the "obsession". I've watched videos of Korean girls as young as 10 years old having (and bringing to school) their cosmetics bags. I guess it's hugely influenced by the entertainment industry.
This video’s sunny take on Korean beauty obfuscates the real issue - this ideal they’re trying to achieve is unrealistic for the vast majority, otherwise it would not require so many people to undergo plastic surgery procedures (highest per capita in the world) and whitening treatments (which is an ingredient in many Korean beauty products). There’s less acceptance and tolerance of different forms of beauty when this one type is so intrinsically tied to status and success. Also, I love how their look is described as so K-pop when they’re all dressed like extras in a Mary J. Blidge video from the 90s.
Korea is extremely hierarchical. Alot of the socio-norms present in Korea are a direct consequence of the rapid economic (unparalleled by any country in modern history). Beauty is often a supplement to career opportunities and is often seen as a necessity. Even then, the West in no different, while most procedures in Korea consist of monolid procedures, botox, and non-evasive laser skin/hair treatments the West (the US only has a capita a little lower than Korea's) much of the procedures are drastic reconstructive surgeries such as implants on ass, breasts, lips, and nose reconstructions. Plus whitening treatments are a traditional beauty standard in most Eastern cultures. In Japan, women paste their faces with white powder. In Korea the lighter the skin, the higher your social status as peasants were exposed to the sun and unlike white people, Asians have the ability to produce melanin pretty quickly. Despite this, Korea will liberalize eventually. Just 30-40 years ago the military was shooting hundreds of peacefully protesting citizens in the streets. Now Korea has managed to liberalize into a democracy. Still much progress has to be made in terms of social norms but that too is bound to change. Many students in Korea are becoming vocal about how much pressure they face in modern society. Btw K-pop is heavily influenced by Hip Hop. The very first K-pop song from Korea was a hip hop song. So not surprising that they are dressed in 90s streetwear.
Kelly Van 50s in what sense? The 1950s of the United States? I don't really agree with the "beauty" part but I think South Korean society can be metaphorically compared to the 1950s US. That is, a seemingly prosperous economy and wealthy middle class overlaying the many systemic and suppressed societal issues. A little different however, the west cannot be compared to the east. While the west has had problems regarding hedonism, Koreans struggle with letting themselves live for once. Their entire life has been centered around work and education: as you can imagine this is pretty impactful upon many young Koreans. So much so that the suicide rate is extremely high in Korea.
Wow what a beautiful video!!! Such a beautiful and inspiring ending ❤️ I would love to see one of these for each culture living in North America! Especially Italian or Indian
Super excited for this series! But the episode could be even longer and explain the topics more - at least I've never heard of the eye line surgery and the like.
I love these videos so much learning all about different cultures it’s really interesting to see how they do things outside of my country I find myself using things from all different cultures in my every day life (but I’m not appropriating someone’s culture ) I just think when you pull things together from other cultures create your own distinct image it’s really cool but something I find really important is that whenever you pull something from a different culture to apply it to your life you always need to know the origins and meaning and what is OK to wear and do and what is not OK to wear and do
it's not about being 'western', it's just wanting bigger eyes, and double eyelids can help achieve that effect. 'western' women also want bigger eyes and do their makeup to look like their eyes are bigger.
About half of east Asians are born with double eyelids. She's not trying to look white, but just the Asians that are already born that way. White people have different eyelids than Asian people with double eyelids.
I'm from Koreatown, its always been home and a community to both Korean and Salvadoran immigrant communities. the recent hotspot tag is a gentrification byline...should do research on places you discuss.
i wouldn't necessarily say that they are doing the "v" aka "peace sign" because they want to have the v line shape. however, yes majority of the koreans prefer to have the v line face shape.
The internet Many korean celebrities have a big skincare routine, so it creates the stereotype that all korean people have a complicated skincare regimen
I naturally have the type of eyelids that she had to contour to get. And before watching this i didn't like my eyelid much but..Koreans actually like that kind of eyelids?!? Beauty does lie in the eyes of the beholder. Pun unintended
While things are trending now in the western world with double eye lid, in less than 10 years time, Asian inspired eyes will make a comeback. Trends get recycled all the time girl.
Isn’t that Emily Mei or Ghoul -whatever she’s going by these days. She’s not even of Korean decent, she’s of Chinese decent. Seriously Mei, a bold face lie, just to get some publicity. FYI, two different ethnic groups of Asian. Really Refinery29, make sure you do your research. Not to mention the lack of actual details/examples of Korean beauty care. Disappointed.
Would it be cultural appropriation if someone not Korean followed Korean beauty? I think it’s only cultural appropriation if they are making fun of it or not respecting it
I'm disappointed. I thought you would explore traditional beauty routines and uses for traditional plants and herbs but you went the kbeauty and double eyelid way.

Alessandra Santamaría I totally agree!
SAME
Agreed

I'm south Asian...I'll stick to the natural 3 or 4 step regime
Agree

"3-4, maybe 5"? So what's with the 10-step skincare process that require more than 5 products? Just marketing strategy I suppose?
And I agree. Though I have been to Seoul only once, based on what I saw, young women didn't dress the way the Korean-Americans dressed in this video.

Curated Connection it is. It’s just kind of like a skin care fad. It works for some, obviously but not realistic to most people.
i agree
I really like the host's hair.
her talking about wanting to get rid of her monolids makes me sad :( i wish non-asian ppl would stop mocking asian ppl for their eyes
A B same ..... I think they are really pretty
I know. I thought that too. The shape of her eyes looked better the way that they are naturally verse all that makeup.

Beautiful ladies.
The second girl is so pretty, why would you want to change those beautiful eyes to look more western???
Thank you! Sometimes I feel that way! Hope you understand~

@@rattailcat Who mentioned White? He said western.
@@congratulashuns You know what I meant. Non-east asian. What's your point?
I'm from Koreatown, its always been home and a community to both Korean and Salvadoran immigrant communities. the recent hotspot tag is a gentrification byline...should do research on places you discuss.
Sadly these standards have gone too far here tbh especially on the teens
Who's the singer at the end? I really like his voice!

Audrey Natalia you mean oval?!

DID JUST WOUND EMILY GURL YOU POPPING
The mom looks like a Korean version of Faye Dunaway.

3:08 I'm Korean but don't use 10-15 products per day. That's not true. who said Korean women use that many products in a day?
The internet
Many korean celebrities have a big skincare routine, so it creates the stereotype that all korean people have a complicated skincare regimen
Some of those girls aren't even Korean, but I guess since they were talking about a "kpop look" it doesn't really matter???
Emily!
You guys couldn't get a Korean girl to represent Korean Beauty?
Justin Park is that you?
I naturally have the type of eyelids that she had to contour to get. And before watching this i didn't like my eyelid much but..Koreans actually like that kind of eyelids?!? Beauty does lie in the eyes of the beholder. Pun unintended
second!
nice of Lindsay Lohan to host this

not at all.
Korean Beauty is extremely popular in Asia and other places.
Koreatown for hard young working professionals? What the hell are you talking about!
I'm disappointed. I thought you would explore traditional beauty routines and uses for traditional plants and herbs but you went the kbeauty and double eyelid way.
