    The mentality of grit determination and putting 110% into every game has significantly declined as the number of players going to Europe has increased. In the past US players played with a massive chip on their shoulders because they were not respected by other teams and the view that soccer is not an American game. They made up the deficit of technical ability through extreme physical fitness, playing hard for every inch a strong tactical organization and will to win. The "softness" of recent displays under GGG was alarming. They did not fight for one another. Rather than exerting physical dominance, they were being bullied. Other team tactics of constantly fouling, clipping feet or throwing elbows after the play would get under their skin and result in loss of focus and terrible reactions leading to unnecessary yellow or red cards. Poch is right to re ignite mental toughness to complement increased skills.

      The players with that display the most grit on the team went to Europe early: Pulisic, Adams, McKennie. It takes grit to go to Europe when you're a teenager. In the previous generation, no one had more grit than Jermain Jones who was born and raised in Germany, only American through his father. If the grit of the American player is falling there's a different reason for it.
      I don't think this generation has less grit. I see the same optimism and determination I saw in previous generations. The difference is how the team is set up to play. It's a lot easier to hold your nerve when you park the bus. It's always easier to be reactive than to be proactive and leave your safe zone. It takes more than fight and grit, it also takes confidence and bravery to push forward when you're up against it. It's also a lot easier to push forward once you are behind, and it's hard to do when you're ahead and worried about giving up the lead. Today's team is built much more around possession and attacking acumen than previous American teams. Previous teams were so far away from being able to play attacking soccer against top teams that it wasn't even a concern. As they demonstrated under Klinsmann, even though they had the grit to not back down when they turtled in a shell they didn't have the bravery to push forward and attack. And Klinsmann was the first one to really request they even try.
      The current US team simply hasn't yet shown the confidence and bravery to turn their grit into full-on attacking football, yet they have too much ambition to revert to parking the bus.

      @@mattmexor2882 I don't agree. The US teams of the 2000s were head and shoulders above the current generation in their physicality and grit on the field. They had to rely on those characteristics because they could not compete straight up on technical ability. Too many times I've seen the current generation go down, put their hands up and stare at the ref looking for a call while play continues. Other times USMNT players would go down so easily, Aaronson was the worst example. Still other times players including Dest and Weah lost focus and did not have the mental discipline to ignore being COCACAFFED. And in other games players would be manhandled by the other teams and other members would not come in to defend their teammates. All of these behaviors on the field point to a lack of mentality that Poch is alluding.

    • @mattmexor2882
      @mattmexor2882 3 дня назад

      @@psu2dcu And so many times I've seen the teams from the 2000s go into a shell and be unable to get out of it. Is that grit? They had some good results. They also had some bad losses. They often won games from a puncher's chance. The other team missed their many chances and the US converted the few it created. Great results but not the sort of play that will win you tournaments.
      I think it has to do with expectation and play style. The expectation on this current team is so much greater. When they grind out a result against Mexico it's not called grit it's called a poor performance and they were lucky to come away with the win. And they are set up to play more offensively instead of to soak up pressure and score on the counter. It just tends to look "grittier" any time a team sets up to soak up pressure.
      I do agree that recently there has been a problem with effort and grit. But it wasn't there in the world cup. It wasn't there in the qualifications. It reared its head mostly since the 2022 world cup. That was because of the culture of the team under Berhalter. Things got stale, and he became like the cool uncle instead of the coach. It's not because the players lack grit. Do you watch these players in their club games? Did you see Pulisic in the Supercoppa? He ran more than any other player on either team on Friday and then again on Monday after having been injured for a month. In stoppage time of the second game he had the wherewithal to play in a delicate through ball while he was in motion. Musah runs all over the field and does whatever he's asked to do for Milan. Mckennie the same for Juventus. Adams has been injured a lot but when he plays he's been a dynamo that never stops, upending players with crunching tackles. These American players in Europe don't lack grit.

    Brazil lost its identity from "jogo bonito" to European style, where a lot of the players spent their childhoods in Europe. This is why Brazil is no longer feared as a footballing powerhouse nation like they used to. The US has lost its grit and maybe bringing in more talented MLS players might be the solution.

    • @bryseisme2
      @bryseisme2 3 дня назад +4

      Must we do this every Jan Camp? If you're looking for a strong mentality, players that chose to play it safe for their careers in MLS rather than pushing themselves in Europe is not the solution. We need future players to follow the path of Pulisic or McKennie, not Jordan Morris.

    • @rmmvw
      @rmmvw 3 дня назад +2

      @bryseisme2 anecdotally, look at how Brazilian players are more playing in the European style and now their entire identity as a national team is lost because those players don't have real ties to the country and its football culture. Higher skill doesn't always equal to success.

    • @bryseisme2
      @bryseisme2 3 дня назад +12

      @@rmmvw You're disingenuously implying that Brazil's success was from its domestic league.
      It's players Kaka, Ronaldinho, Cafu, etc. went to the best leagues in the world and played against the strongest competition consistently to push their game to its highest level and won the world cup.
      If the majority of their players had taken someone like Hulk's career path, and played it safe, they wouldn't have achieved the level of success they got.

    • @rmmvw
      @rmmvw 3 дня назад +1

      @bryseisme2 most of the players you speak of played in their domestic leagues at the professional level before getting poached, thus reinforcing my statement. They got their notoriety after playing in Europe but they brought their skills and flair from playing in Brazil first.
