  • In 2016, Lockheed Martin was awarded a contract to develop a new X-plane, with the goal of researching low-boom supersonic flight. The result - an aircraft now referred to as the X-59 - has now been completed, and will soon begin testing. But what is the X-59, and how will it impact the aerospace world?

Brilliant summary. I learnt more about the X-59 from this episode than NASA's own launch event coverage - which if you saw it, was a total yawnfest. Who wants to watch senior management making boring long speeches patting themselves on the back of work carried out by engineers and designers.

I wholeheartedly agree. The Lockheed Martin RUclips shorts were better than the official unveiling lol😂.

Not really. If we were writing for the algorithm it would be about some Luftwaffe Ace, or similar. We just think these topics are interesting so hope they are interesting to others.

So it's 500 times louder than it was originally specified? Sounds like the project is already a complete failure for commercial use because there's zero chance people will tolerate half a Concorde worth of car door slamming noises for every plane passing overhead.
Hopefully the military applications are worth the investment because a mere 50% sound reduction (rather than the promised 99.9%) is absolutely 100% DOA for civilian use.
