Eh. Story started out pretty good, interesting set up and setting. Started getting a little less interesting once the “creepy corpo conspiracy” elements were introduced. Ending was… not great. It tried to introduce wayyy too much at the last minute and just ended abruptly after simultaneously revealing too much but not giving any satisfying resolution. I feel like this story was certainly trying to crib “Search and Rescue Woods” (probably the best creepypasta ever) at first but lost what made that story so good. It started getting a little too complex and with too many added elements, rather than staying to the format that made Search and Rescue so good, that is, people just sharing tales of weird shit in a believable manner in passing over drinks or around the campfire. No in depth investigation or grand conspiracies or sudden resolution to all of it. It’s just weird shit, and it happens. Anyway, 6/10 overall. That’s my review no one asked for. My fav night shift story: a man waddled in, obviously uncomfortable and possibly in outright pain. Writes vague scribble for "reason for visit" on intake. OK.... In exam room, doctor asks the usual, why are you hear and where does it hurt etc. Guys says, I had an accident, and got a cucumber stuck inside of me. Well... being the ER, that's nothing new. People get everything stuck up inside them: light bulbs (hope it doesn't pop!), gerbils, Lemmiwinks, etc. But there's a line on the form that the doctor has to fill in. He knows the answer, I mean, it's kinda obvious. But he asks anyways: "So how did this happen?" The guy says, with a straight face: "I slipped while I was gardening." The mental image of the logistics of that act have made me laugh for years. Oh, that and the one where a massive dude, like 6'6" and 400 lbs minimum, had a similar, um, accident. You know those "novelty" toys? The toys that are basically a horse dong, but made of silicone? Like the size of a large man's arm? He had one of THOSE stuck. They manage to get the speculums and retractor set up, can finally get a grip on this behemoth phallus, snd removing it... It was like the world's worst magic trick. It just kept going and going.... So after the procedure, they call his emergency contact. His wife. Awkwardly, the nurse tells her she needs to pick up her husband, that he's stable but at the hospital. He's gonna be OK, but needs a ride. The wife, concerned, asks what happened. The nurse relays the story, and as she tells the wife about the "foreign body removal", the wife cuts her off and shouts: "God DAMN IT! He did it AGAIN?!?!"
My mom was a nurse in the early 2010s, I asked her what the worst thing she's ever seen was. She told me nothing ever held a candle to a domestic violence emergency she was called into. A drunk man pulled out a 12 gauge shotgun loaded with 0-0 buckshot and blew straight through a woman's torso. She was alive, despite most of her stomach being ripped to shreds and sections of her spine were showing. I'm not a medical professional, so I have trouble understand how someone can survive that. My mom said the woman never walked again and lost one of her kidneys.
That’s horrific. Thank God she survived, but paralysis and the loss of a kidney seems mild compared to how things could’ve ended for her. Nurses are superhuman. No clue how they see things like this and keep going, but we should all be thankful they do. Your mom is a hero.
