    1st in your age category and tenth place overall. Incredible achievement! It's crazy the amount of blood, sweat and tears runners put into training and it so often comes down to how you feel on the day...or during the very short period of time in that day when the race actually takes place! I've really enjoyed watching the journey and look forward to the next one!

    Great to hear you being so positive about it. I looked at your 5k splits and kind of deduced that you had reset the game plan relatively early on. Still a great achievement and sounds as though you have learned a lot from the experience. Thanks for the series and look forward to seeing what's next. Aside: I bagged my first sub 40 min 10k yesterday (52yrs)

    That key adjustment after listening to your body and being honest with yourself was crucial. Not many runners have the mental ability to do this mid-race, well done! Sounds like that cold is still lingering, so unlucky but your training rescued the day since you knew exactly the effort to dial in. I’ve enjoyed watching this journey, thanks for sharing it. Definitely given me inspiration 👍👍

    It’s actually very inspirational to hear you say that you simply “didn’t feel it,” because I thought this only happens to those of us who don’t run as fast as you! We are only human and regardless of prep sometimes it just doesn’t happen on race day… Still, great run!

      "It," happens all the time, and probably just as often to us runners who are either faster/more experienced. A bad day just looks a bit different to an "outsider."
      The most important part is to take the lessons that are given to you and learn, hopefully, to also take these in stride and not allow them to grate on you too much.

That one 50m turn at 36k seems like just silly planning. I also did more than 42.2 and did all the tangets. At least the weather was nice. Finished 3rd in my age group. (40-49)

    Well done! I can relate very much to this. You definitely made the right decision to gon feel. My last marathon I made the mistake you avoided and continued on pace with HR to high. I had a PB, but the suffering it took after hitting the wall at KM28 made be feel depressive so I did not really enjoy it the way I hoped for. If I had ran the race on feel I would had a PB as well and enjoyed it much more. And less time needed for recovery! You will be happy up and running soon!

    I actually thought about you during my mountain run today. When you asked in a previous video if you’ll make the time. I was thinking that there’s no way that I would know because a lot of it depends on how you feel that particular day. Big goals like that coming down to a single day can be rough. While nine minutes is a lot to take off, if you “weren’t feeling it” that day that could definitely be worth nine minutes or more. The body is such a mystery. I wish you luck if you give it another go.

    Great meeting you Duncan! Sorry I didn't stick around to chat more but I knew the countdown was coming and I wanted to get my warmup in. I think three things got you. 1) The course. Montreal isn't a PB course. Too many hills. 2) You were sick. 3) Most likely too many marathons in too short a time. I think proper rest and a proper longer buildup will get you under 2h30. For sure you can do this. That isn't the issue. The issue is picking the right course, giving yourself enough time to rest and build up correctly. Either way, I'll be watching you. I hope you enjoyed your stay in Montreal. À bientôt!

    All you can ask for after a huge race is being satisfied with your effort. The same level of effort can have wildly different outcomes on different days due to course profile, personal health (physical and mental), temperature, humidity, wind, course congestion, etc. etc. etc. It's why I LOVE running with power (Stryd). I know if I execute certain power targets, regardless of the time, I had a GREAT day. On race day, I watch my realtime power, my average power per segment (1st 5k, 5-32k, 32-36, 36-42.2) and I will monitor my HR to make sure I don't tip into threshold until after 32k. If you keep stacking these blocks your goal happen organically. Enjoy the process!

    • @global-runner
      @global-runner  2 месяца назад

      This is really interesting. I think I’d like to get more data on power to see if that is a helpful stat. I subs like it is.
      It would be great if someone could tell us what our average heart rate needs to be those first 32k. That would be highly individual but would also have the same effect.

    • @timtrenholm3698
      @timtrenholm3698 2 месяца назад

      @@global-runner That's easy. Determine your LT2 and stay 5+BPM ( could be more or less depending on your own Max HR) below that till 32k or 36k, whatever feels comfortable to you. Everytime and anytime spent near or above that LT2 is burning matches and forcing your body to turn off most/all of your fat burning. While I run by power, if I see my heart rate hit 180BPM I immediately back off till it goes to 175 and stays there. Once I hit 32k....everything goes out the window, and I hold as much power as I know I safely can without blowing up, which is normally 10k power/effort till the finish. Power is a game changer and in a few years will probably be the primary metric people will be using.

    8th overall and 1st in your age group on a bad day? Super inspirational. What was the worst part of the course for you? The long shadeless trek down St Laurent and back after splitting from the half marathon runners or the hills after 35 k?

      @global-runner  2 месяца назад

      I had some bad moments early on for no apparent reason. I didn’t feel great at 10k but then 15-25 the downhill helped me settle in a bit. 28-35 were brutal. Long straight uphill section. But after 35k I felt much better and was able to hang on. So I would say the worst part was around 10k. Which is way too early to be struggling!

  • @Nyelands
    @Nyelands 2 месяца назад

    It's funny how a marathon can play tricks on you. But you also had some signs of illness days prior to the race, maybe that was an indicator for how you felt on race day. Maybe you pushed yourself just a little too hard in training and the body decided to go into recovery mode. Maybe a longer taper next time? It is hard to say. My first marathon (Copenhagen 2023) went terribly wrong. Already after 17K my quads gave on me and the rest of the race they just starting hurting more and more and it was a battle. But I didn't slow down and I didn't listen to my body so about 50 meters before the finish my body just stopped functioning and I had to stop and get help from samaritans. I still don't know what went wrong and why my quads gave up so early. But what I learned was to go by feel and let the race come to you, not the other way around. Only look at your watch for inspiration and to understand how you are doing don't use it to force a pace or anything else like that on race day. So I respect how you tackled the race on this particular day and swallowed your pride. I guess this is what is fascinating with marathon you never quite know how it is going to turn out. I think the half marathon is much more predictive. So that can be your next goal? But you should definitely also try this goal on the marathon again just give yourself time to recover mentally and physically.

My distance friends often get ill at the end. Maybe instead of a last week taper, cut 10% or add a rest day per week the last three weeks. A couple days of extra rest over several weeks , is worth a million. These sudden tapers never made sense to me…as it’s like a shock to the body (even though it’s less work). A week is nothing to the body for anyone over 30. I believe that it plays on your immune system in negative ways. Just like build ups should be gradual, so should tapers.
