  • PhD student Emily Warren talks about the myth of "finding oneself" and how a dedication to grit & tolerance will lead to true happiness in our work and lives.
    About TEDx:
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized

Self discovery changed my life. Through discovering myself I found out that I had ADHD at 27 years old after suffering every single day. I got medication that changed my life. In these last few weeks I found out that I have many mild autistic traits and that I probably am autistic and now I feel for the first time that I truly know myself.

@Dawson Davis I take an SNRI, not a stimulant. Yet, I think it's incorrect to say it is like speed. It's a small prescribed dose for people who need it. It's usually those who don't have to live with ADHD who say such things.

She's talking about what everyone talks about when they talk about finding themselves. Live in the moment etc. Go find yourself etc. It seems her confusion is semantic. She assumes that everyone 'looks out there', that our true selves are 'out there'. Basically she is saying that finding yourself is a myth, but here's how to really find yourself.....!

I felt as if she wrote her speech to target middle schoolers. My gosh, I could have wrote an essay in the time it took her to get a sentence out. She needs a class on public speaking. Were not 8 years old, however, I felt like I was sitting in a gym at a high school graduation ceremony.

Finding yourself is never a myth. And I personally believe that 'you' only actualize when you find your true self. There could be on self-discovery but it has never ever been a myth nor it would be. Life comes with all those twist and turns. And you only achieve greatness when you actually find who you are and what's your 'why.'

It pays to be "spiritual-centered"... "The more we search for ourselves, the less likely we are to find ourselves; and the more we search for God, and to serve our fellow-men, the more profoundly will we become acquainted with ourselves, and the more inwardly assured. This is one of the great spiritual laws of life." ~ Shoghi Effendi, Baha'i Faith

Yes we should 100% live in the moment, but as many of us know from going deep within, we have finally found the freedom to be ourselves again. Life is not just about grit, we have an amazing & infinite amount of love & compassion within us, so much so that once you truly feel it's all encompassing presence there is no going back to this way of thinking. The materialistic view of self winning in this world through grit and dominating presence suddenly becomes very clear to those who are finally becoming more and more enlightened. Our inner being is constantly evolving, once we connect with it our lives have the potential to literally change before our very eyes. Love and peace to all x.

Good message overall but I feel Emily has her philosophies mixed up. Being yourself in the present moment and taking full control of our bodies physiology is part of the notion of "finding yourself". Finding yourself is about finding that desire that drives you, you have passion for, something you believe in wholeheartedly thus our work becomes enjoyable every step of the way. Momentum builds and the energy to do your work becomes more readily available. Basically all Emily shared was her life experience on how she found herself.

I understand what shes saying. There's a group of people that are perpetual " I need to find myself" women usually suffer the most from this but what shes saying if you guys would start from openness you'd see. that finding yourself isnt a thing its about being conscious of who you are and becoming more self aware the more you acquire about yourself the more self aware because knowing yourself requires research and ive watch these same ppl say this i need to find myself not inquire about them selves at all and act like one day it will strike them over the head.

Agree, she has said that we look out and not inward enough. So meaning we should look for who we are. The concept of finding ourselves is to look inward. There is no correct definition of what we should be, other than what we feel. So yes she has basically found herself.

I too expect everything I do to be perfect and unless I change my way of thinking to doing the best I can, I will surely be caught in that endless cycle of putting an extraordinary amount of pressure where it doesn't need to be. Interesting.

crikeymos22 Same, she sounds so full of herself, "Im so atypical", "I got my shit together". No such thing as finding yourself means she found someone else to be, someone who gets attention and praise that she covets more so than being yourself and hated for it. I feel both finding oneself and self improvement are both on going. As for dedication and tolerance leading to "true happiness " in our work and lives I disagree. You should never dedicate yourself to bein something you're not but there's nothing wrong with further educating yourself in all ways. For example: Someone loves computers and landscaping but their dedicated to their job as a sales rep. I don't think their dedication is really what makes them happy but the experience they receive from that job do benefit to the self improvement and finding oneself part

So according to this young lady, finding oneself isnt knowing who you want to be but who you already are? We all have different traits that builds our personality but listen, I did not stop my developement at the time i learned how to walk, Why? Because i wanted to learn how to RUN, its called seeking something greater. I dont know how or whom gave you a phD but this only strengthened my disbelief of fake authority, she may be educated but she sure as hell lack som vital information about certain aspects of reality. Exactly, yet so many people strive to become something theyre not meant to be, or do. I wouldnt say these people have "found themselves" in a sense, in that case theyd be doing something else. Illusions of true happiness from fame, wealth and power often disrupt whats actually importaint in life, so it disrupts ones path on to what some may call "finiding yourself"

These fractures are deep sores they truly send signals that add to how we percieve ourselves, others and the world at large. through psycho-therapeutic, entheogenic or any other technology of change these can be tools of self discovery that change? What about finding yourself in the sense of grounding and learning how to respond according to your true sensory impressions? I have done regressive works and know.

Ummm this is 'finding oneself'. It's only in the present moment that we can unplug from the rhetoric and accept ourselves outside the opinions of everything outward. so, ya, this is Finding oneself so I guess it's not a myth. It should be titled Letting go of everything else is where we find ourself here and now. Good luck.

There are so many mixed messages here. I think you need to decide on which one you really want to make, or go back to English class and relearn the definitions of words. Everybody is born knowing nothing. We all have to learn about both ourselves and the environment/culture we live in. You have to look both inward and outward to learn/decide what kind of relationship needs to be developed for both you and the world to be in harmony with each other. Otherwise, both you and the world will be disappointed.

  • @pancakesamich

The Myth of "Resilience": Humans are so complex that we make up crazy complicated stuff to satisfy our minds. We're born resilient-that's not a special quality. Everybody that's had a childhood is resilient. The truth is, everybody has a crazy life, and the one's who are successful have learned a magical thing called "acceptance". They've accepted that they can carry on because of their crazy life, not in spite of it, and have accepted their life story. If you don't know yourself, you can't deal with anyone. That is the meaning to life: To live. Discover yourself, and you'll be able to live. That's why we love successful/famous people, because they have a strong sense of themselves. Don't just figure out your passion though, also figure out what you naturally do for people. We all have natural magnetism to what we are. A squirrel doesn't get up and ask "I wonder who I am?" it just is, and does.

Finding your purpose in life is a myth? Ouch. This is Emily's opinion, some aspects of which are insightful and some contradicting. Creating a sense of meaning by how you live and what you do is tantamount to a sense of contentedness. You can do this while still remaining grounded in the present, without missing or not appreciating any of it.

Higher purpose is not the same thing as finding yourself. and neither of those are the same thing as quote unquote "metaphysics, divinity etc", which reasonable adults can debate. and not all people who "seek" truer self rely on scripture, mental wandering, cults. grit is valuable, I think hardly anyone doubts that. life is harder for some than others, privilege in various arenas of life are not equal. you seem to misunderstand what is "self discovery", which is as a term vague enough as it is... a ramble

Strif Tsal Correct. Now we're getting into shades of gray from person to person, which means we can talk until the cows come home and never really land on anything concrete. I liked everything up until she started talking about grit, tolerance, and letting go. I don't find them to compliment each other.
