Absolutely love my e39. People had my head filled with the wrong information saying how they will break all the time and will cost a fortune to own. This is the only car that hasnt lwft me stranded and most parts are cheap and easy to work on. Best build car hands down too. Mine has 230k and drives like its new. Still does 150mph+ and burns no oil. Cant even heard anything if the windows are rolled up. That amazed me so much when i got it. Cant hear the engine or road noise❤
I’ve got a 1997 e39, 540i, I believe it’s the M sport or some other special edition because there were only 135 sent over from Germany that year, it’s got a factory lowered suspension, the 6-speed transmission, and the different seven spoke wheels. In 1997 the 540 did not see any the interior“m” badges the 2000-2001 saw. I’ve got 130,000 miles on it and the last owner drove the car mostly regularly so I’m not too sure if I’m worried about the timing chain guides or some of those other parts related to, but I still want to get in there and replace them using a trusted technician that worked on BMW’s 20+ years. Hopefully I can get the job done for $2 to $3k but I haven’t done it yet so we’ll see. Because if you don’t do the job and the timing skips while driving, you will grenade your M 60 or 62 engine. It’s my understanding that Vanos or non vanos, doesn’t matter, still happens especially if you leave the car sitting and don’t change the oil frequently enough. Other than those plastic timing guides, the car is super smooth to drive, so quiet when the windows are rolled up, the V-8 sounds great with a muffler delete, and it is a beautiful car. I found out in those years. BMW and Mercedes were not sparing money to build quality vehicles at that time, that’s one reason why they ride so quietly. It just shows you the importance of doing correct maintenance on schedule and not letting a car sit more than a month without driving it 10 miles or so. Anyway I do believe it’s a quality car People can certainly enjoyed them, and they do look better than so many other cars today. The E 39 five or seven series has held up well

I bet you don't own a bmw and when they looked like that people said they need to change them to a more updated style hour just repeating things you know nothing about I bet he didn't design the whole car or the mechanics
Me too, but not like new lol, it’s in good shape though. mine started as an m-sport auto, then swapped to 6 speed, so I believe it has the 3.15:1 , it’s stock & amazing, I’ve smoked s5’s, stangs, Camaros, chargers, 335i’s, e36 m3, some Porsches, golf r, gti’s , the list goes on. best race was against a newer m440i we were neck and neck for a while but I walked him down and eventually left him links behind, we had a long road to run so I redlined 5th and got into 6th hauling major booty it was fun but reckless, no other cars on the road it was early in the a.m , nonetheless dangerous. I don’t encourage racing but can’t help myself when someone wants the 540’s smoke , people seemed surprised by how quick it is for being a luxury sports sedan, most don’t understand it has a torquey v8 that loves 3rd gear pulls :) I don’t go lane splitting racing or ever cut anyone off to race, straight line 3rd gear pulls is where I get em, many of these cars would probably beat me in the 1/4 mile. 540i with 3.15 and 6S just really moves in the mid gears

It also is capable of adding password/code to the car which is the only one to have it (or is it?🤔)

the self charging key is great until they break and you cant just pop in a battery
