He went from by frame putting in the best possible input in each frame. He also cobbled together an RNG checker to manipulate and predict what items he'd get, what would spawn where, and AI behavior. It's so precise that I'd say each room took an average of an hour at the very least. Many took longer. He has archives of all of his streams on his channel if you're interested

Great Maze starts at 48:45 and ends at 1:03:23. Even at TAS speed, a quarter of the run is just the Great Maze. If that isn't a testament to how fucking long the Great Maze is, nothing is.
Not to mention Peach is used for most of the Great Maze, which is much faster than the other characters. If Peach could be used for the entire game, Great Maze would be more than a quarter of the run.
The fact that it takes a TAS 1 hour to beat the main game, excluding all the extra stuff, show how much care and time was put into Brawl's Subspace Emissary
I agree subspace was really cool, but the time it takes TAS to beat it really means nothing. Its just how much story is locked behind conditional flags.
glad i'm not the only one who thought this, it's rare to get any long levels like that in the smash engine so it becomes like an almost entirely different game
Smash Run needs to make a comeback, it was fun. Edit: If Smash Run does return, I hope it includes more third-party enemies like Slimes, Creepers, and Sniper Joes. 3DS was sorta lacking on those (only Mets and Eggrobos for Mega Man and Sonic, really?)

A lot of its mechanics were very fun and in retrospect probably had a lot to do with Subspace Emissary (like gliding), but were just terrible mechanics to have for a competitive scene. Smash was and is, primarily, a competitive fighting game (whatever else Nintendo says they intended, that's what it is in reality) Coming off the heels of Melee, the most beloved fighting game in the franchise (and some would say of any franchise), anything anti-competitive was a bad look.

There are a myriad of reasons to play a game like Rust or an MMO like RuneScape - competitiveness is just one factor, but so is community building, reaching personal goals, experiencing the story. Those things are built into the game and influences how they're played. Fighting games are inherently competitive. Whether you play for fun or at tournaments, you're primarily playing to beat your opponent.
I will never understand why Sakurai didn't make a sequel to subspace emissary. The story is so so good despite having literally no spoken dialogue and character interactions are so good. My favorite part probably is that Pokemon Trainer straight up only starts with Squirtle and as you progress through the game with him you get Ivysaur and Charizard in literal pokemon battles. Among a LOT of other things.

He said he couldn't redo that ever again and went for world of light instead because the game is too big now, with too many characters and a lot of priorities like balance that are harder. Creating a subspace emissary is basically creating a whole new game with completely new enemies and such, which is no longer realistic.

Also, what sucks now is most games are focusing on PvP anymore, which really sucks for people who cannot play competitively and have fun, like myself. Even if it has a story mode, the focus is still on the PvP aspect since that's "most popular" and most lucrative. Stockholders have more say than the devs do anymore, and stockholders say PvP is more lucrative. That and people can bet on the eSports, therefore even more money surrounding it.

I am quite surprised you gave this much dedication to a game like this. It makes me smile knowing that a game that was a huge part of my childhood is still getting attention from speedrunners to this day.
The sheer amount of RNG manipulation in this TAS is absolutely ludicrous To have peach draw a bomb every time from down special is nuts but also manipulating the AI to sd on command 9:02 is just the icing on the cake This TAS maker is a MadLad for sure.
Oh man the nostalgia on this. This is what it felt like I did while playing - mashing a on text, accidentally getting blasted in the right direction, but in reality it looked more like how you'd expect a 12 year old who never knew how to block, dodge or grab would play.
@Alexander LeBlanc it was more just resilience. I just kept trying over and over until I finally won, but I did have to get my friend and do 2 player to beat tabuu. He did know how to dodge.
This is my first time ever watching a Subspace Emissary speed run, and a TAS run of Subspace Emissary no less. I haven’t gotten very far, but these first few levels have absolutely floored me already. Fantastic work to all who worked on this TAS and I’m excited to watch the rest of it :)
I always look forward to improvements on TAS despite the insane amount of effort needed. For example, Gecko and FFIX. That makes my heart sing with joy.
I like how much this proves just how much content is in this one singular game mode in a fighting game, that literally flying through every level so fast the camera can not keep up, it still takes a literal hour to complete. That is insane. Also I really wish we could get an explanation for every trick in here in a video form from someone, cuz i am EXTREMELY curious.

World of Light is cool and all, but I never get tired of Subspace Emissary. It's the best and amazing adventure mode we ever had in Smash bros. Gosh, I miss the brawl era.. Wish we can go back to those times.
sub space was so much fun after u had completed it once & had the access to play all of the stages as any character u liked. this was basically the bootleg wario land game of my childhood. also speaking of brawl, the second time i ever launched the game i suddenly unlocked every unlockable character after pressing start at the title screen. must have been a bug, but a welcome one for sure.
