My granddaddy’s niece didn’t have one blade a grass in her yard. Granddaddy said her husband was too lazy to mow. The chickens roamed around, pecking in the yard. We loved chasing them. In the summer she would put her wood burning stove on the back porch. She’d can out there. Kept the house cooler. We would get so dirty! We loved it. Mama not so much. The best cabbage you will ever eat is that fall crop, that frost will make it so good even if it gets snowed on them give them a kick of sweetness to it and it's just delicious..It makes it on into the winter too.
I live here in Virginia about 50 miles north of Eden NC..So I just planted this week us some cabbage slips broccoli, cauliflower, brussel sprouts, broccoli and collard greens and turnips, kale, mustard and winter radish.I've got to plant my garlic, and sow some spinach seeds for an early spring crop...I love the fall planting..I've got some late tomatoes blooming as well 😋 the late and last crop of the year..I sure do enjoy watching you and your husband and your precious girls..I'm going on 63 and my husband is 70 but I still love to grow my vegetables and harvest them and can, or freeze them.. Good eating in the winter months..

Here in north central Alabama fall is coming early - about 3 weeks early. Our farmers all say fruit came in a bit early this spring and summer and is ending early. Cool nights and days have brought the yellow fall butterflies out earlier than usual. Your cabbage may do well this fall and greens are always good to have as the weather cools down…- so many of our farmers say they expect a good harvest for fall produce. Apples from Crow Mountain in north Alabama are coming in sweet and juicy! Some of the best apples grown in the south. You have a lovely garden- peaceful and plenteous. Blessings on you and your family and a ripe and bounteous harvest this fall! Sure do enjoy what you share. Feels like home to me.

You are so right about the lawns not producing anything but work. I didn't think about that before. We have city restrictions, as silly as that sounds. My friend got a ticket for planting a few tomato plants on the side of her house. Apparently, it's against the ordinance to plant vegetables that are visible from the street. We met a lady at church who invited us to her home to apply aloe to my moms thumb. She went to pick up a shell & it sliced her thumb bad. When we got to her house, her yard front & back was covered in small pebbles instead of grass. Grass doesn’t grow well down in Florida. It looked very nice & they didn’t have to cut grass!
Also just wanted to say when I was 11, we went barefoot in summer too! City would use tar & gravel on our street & we’d run across it barefoot & never bothered us. However, I was in backyard & stepped on a honey bee. My foot swelled. Mom made sure the stinger was out. By that evening,I had red streaks running up my leg. Took my dad & a neighbor man to get me into the car. I spent so much being in hospital from kidney disease I was born with that I didn’t want to go to hospital! Emergency determined I was allergic to bee stings & gave me a shot! I’ve worn shoes or sandals ever since! I try hard not to get stung again! So far, I haven’t gotten stung! Either I might have gotten immune or could react worse! I’m nearly 68 now & still hope I never get on the wrong side of a bee to find out! I do miss walking barefoot in the grass!!

Oh the memories you bring up--lol Once after getting off a trail ride I tied my horse to a tree. Well the horse started stomping and I thought I had tied her up on an ant bed. I walked over to untie her and immediately knew I was in trouble.
I untied the horse and she ran off, so you know what happened. Yes I was covered in ground hornets. Burying bumblebees I called them. Man was that tough. We finally jumped in the car and a couple of them even followed us in. Well after everything settled down, the horse finished eating and went in the paddock and just kinda collapsed. Well we called the vet and luckily he was in on a Sunday evening and we loaded up and took the horse in. Made me kinda mad because the vet wouldn't give me a shot---hahahah I took Benadryl and was fine---no tobacco chewers around. Love listening to you and Matt on Sundays! Enjoyed the video!

Here in AZ we are "monsoon" planting. Our summer "monsoon" is the rainy season, but the temps are still over 100. Short season bush beans went in earlier in August and are showing signs of flowering. Fall tomatoes went in as transplants yesterday and have a 30% shade cover until temps get into the 90's. Also short season, but, I might be able to nurse them through the winter to get a head start on spring. Other fall crops are squash, radishes, carrots, and brassicas. Lettuces come later when it really has cooled down.

Rattlesnake beans are the best. We usually planted 2 or 3 long rows, on the end of the garden with slight drainage. At the end of the season, Pop would plow them under, and sometimes sow clover. We always planted beans on Good Friday, and were enjoying them by July. I actually liked the beans Mom canned a little better than fresh off the vine. We'd usually open up quart jar, add a little oil, onion, a couple of sliced potatoes, and carrots, and about 20 minutes later, good eatin'. Another thing I just remembered. Pop would plant corn first, and then the rattlesnake beans between the corn. As the corn matured, the beans would run up the stalks, so we didn't have to use stobs and wire to stake the beans. Pop said "The Lord told me to do that." :)

I don't know about other bees but honey bees are generally more aggressive during the month of August. This is because in this area there is a nectar dearth in August. The foraging bees which are your oldest and most aggressive bees don't have much to do because there is little in the way of nectar or pollen to gather. So they tend to hang around the hive and just become hateful to contend with.

Low ground cover, for places you walk, that you never have to mow. Wood sorrel, for example. Dichondra. Be careful with white clover that Claims it's "mini" or dwarf. You have to mow it for it to grow that way. You wouldn't have to mow it as much as grass, though. Also good for the bees and soil. Easier and cleaner to deal with than mulch.

It goes way too fast, already county fairs and tractor show time, and harvest is almost upon us. Taking one of my tractors to a threshing show this weekend. When I was 8 me and my brother took a baseball bat to a hornets nest stung over 50 times and ended up in the er. Mother was so mad at us. After you get the gardens harvested in the fall do you let your chickens go through it, I even let my cows go through our veggie garden which is about an acre. I never harvest our laying chickens, theyre too much like pets, just as spoiled as the cats. Some of them and one of the roosters follow me around like dogs. You should grade an area out and make it bigger. As a farmer its always good to plan ahead, I even do it several years out in some cases.

It’s a work in progress and we have lots more to do. We do all mulch for our pathways between beds with weed fabric underneath. But honestly other than that I just let the weeds grow. The lizards love the cover and I’ve noticed I have more pollinators so it helps my garden!

From what I understand people originally had grass in their yards to prove that they were rich enough that they didn't need the land for growing food. Matt's right, it doesn't make any sense laboring so much over something that just sits there and accomplishes nothing. Mowed grass smells good, sure, but tomato plants smell a whole lot better. Taste better too!! 😉

Some did similarly in Europe with thatched roofs...much more prone to fire. Status symbol, like you could afford the risk.

" All my Lord's goodness" ! Just thinking about how much time people spend on mowing the grass last week . My dad had a long handle sickle for that job in the 1960's . Would it be wonderful to have neighborhood goats taking care of the weeds , and grass ? Neighbor number one would have the goats for a few days then neighbor number two for a few days ,and so on . Rotating ! Remember-Think of something new . People in Wales allow their animals to roam free . They seem to know where home is . Buy small one cup tea bags for bee stings . Takes the pain away , and keeps swelling down . Wet bag an apply too bite .
    Wrote too much .
    Always So Good !

Matt's looking forward to hunting season. When we kept honey bees years ago, I got some inside my boots one evening & my foot swelled up bad. Had to go to work the next day with my furry house shoes on because I couldn't get my shoes on because of the swelling. If you can put ammonia on an instant sting it will take away the pain almost immediately. If you don't have ammonia, anything with ammonia in it (like window cleaner, etc.) will help a lot. I would love to see you be able to afford a log splitter to help with all that wood you have to split each year. How about that apple bread recipe...can we have it from you? Hugs!

Lay cardboard over the lawn you want to convert to new beds. Cover it as deeply as you can with natural materials. I have done this with vegetable scraps and other things that would go into the compost pile, leaves, straw. This will smother the grass and give you a good foundation. If you do this now, you should be ready to plant in the spring. Just add some extra compost when planting. It takes a while for the soil critters to break down the grass roots. I have a bed I started two years ago, and it is doing beautifully.

If you don't like grass I think you should make a bigger garden or perhaps a grape arbor. I love the look of the beans growing up the cattle fencing. It's very peaceful looking in your garden. I grew up loving the ability to walk barefoot in the soft grass so I do enjoy my little patch of green. I don't have a vegetable garden because I travel summers.

Guy in Sequim ,Wa. Spread evergreen wood chips all over his grass to keep weeds down. Soil mulched and softer for planting. Check out Back to Eden gardening. Paul Gautchie. You might enjoy his gardening simplicity. Not bark dust. But fresh chipped wood about 1" and smaller. Acts as a mulch and moisture barrier.

When I was in 5th grade, I was walking home from the bus stop swinging my backpack over my head and hit a hornets nest. I screamed and ran and my Mom came out thinking I was being attacked by dogs. She grabbed the water hose and sprayed them to drive them away. My Dad walked up to get my backpack (I left it there when I ran) and he got stung on the eyelid. I was stung around 50 times plus the ones they couldn't count in my hair. I was fine, itchy, but fine. My Dad almost had to be admitted to the hospital. After he got home that night from the hospital, he and our neighbor burned the nest with a lit gasoline soaked rag on a LONG stick.
