  • I’ve had a number of requests to shoot a video series about the Yaesu FT-710 AESS (Acoustic Enhanced Speaker System), similar to my FTdx10 series. Ham Radio Outlet loaned me a Yaesu FT-710 AESS for just that purpose.
    In this video I show how I enter the TX audio parameters for operation with, and without, the Speech Processor, while using the stock SSM-75E microphone. I cover the thought process involved and how to interpret the controls available to achieve TX audio that compliments your voice.
    Note that the parameters for the SSM-75E usually work well for the Yaesu M-70 desk mic. I’ve worked with some VIP Patreon team members to set up their M-70. I recommended that they enable the low-cut switch on the bottom of the M-70 when they are working DX, but disable the low-cut while rag chewing. They reported great success with that approach. I listened to their audio and it is some of the best I’ve ever heard.
    Subscribe and click the notification bell to stay tuned for more information about the FT-710 AESS.

    The tutorial was perfect. Please consider and do not forget that the FT-710 is priced around a1000euros while the Ftdx10 costs 50% more. So any reference to the ftdx10 should not be used due to the enormous price difference. Thanks again for your excellent video. Today I ordered my FT-710 for 969euros and I am very happy with that.

      When this series was shot, there was a $100 difference in price. At the Hamfest, they were priced the same last year. This year, the FTdx10 was $1199.95 at the Huntsville Hamfest. Not changing my videos. Sorry.

      The parameters I cover in this video are for the stock hand mic or a Yaesu desk mic, such as the MD-100AX8 or M-70. These parameters aren’t ideal for a Heil microphone. The Heil will require very different parametric EQ parameters in order to sound ideal. But, I’m glad you found some settings that work for you.

But you should use the settings for the FTdx10 that I show in video #4 of the FTdx10 series. The FTdx10 uses the same DSP chip as the FTdx101D/MP. The FT-710 uses a chip from a different manufacturer. There is a noticeable difference in the AMC and the speech processor. So use the FTdx10 videos as a guide for setting up the FTdx101D/MP.

    Hi Doug, this video has left me a bit disappointed in regards to the ALC/COMP meter amongst a few other things. However I still decided to give the radio a try, it was too hard to pass on the Black Friday deals hi hi. By the way, after watching all of your videos on the dx10 last year I decided to purchase one, absolutely no regrets, love the dx10. I also purchased a FT891 to do portable work and like that radio very much as well. So in the coming days I’ll be playing with the 710. Perhaps you can do a part two/revisit to this video in the near future, that would be great. I’ve learned a lot by watching your videos not only on the radios I have but other videos as well. Yes, I was disappointed as well. And you saw when I did. In other words, I’m letting the viewers see what I see when I see it. But it’s still a good transceiver. I can live without a compression meter. In fact, that is the one meter I can definitely do without. But ALC is a must. And SWR. I leave mine set to SWR during normal operation.

      I go into great detail in video #4 of the FTdx10 series. The main difference is the AMC setting. The Automatic Mic Gain Control needs to be set higher, at around 95. The AMC acts as a type of limiter. It can work against the mic gain and the speech processor. After the EQ parameters are set and the Mic EQ is enabled, set the mic gain to 55, processor to 17, and AMC to 95. Adjust the mic gain until the ALC meter reaches the dividing line between the white and blue on voice peaks but it doesn’t go into the blue. Next, lower the AMC level to the point where the ALC meter starts to drop. Don’t lower the AMC beyond that point.

      M-70 is the mic I recommend for Yaesu radios. You can use the same EQ parameters as the ones for the hand mic. You might need to adjust the mic gain a bit, but it depends upon how close you speak to the desk mic. Enable the Low-cut switch on the bottom of the mic when working DX.
      If you want a boom mic, I recommend the Heil PR-781. For a headset, I recommend the Heil Pro Set Elite 6. Both the 781 and the headset can use the same EQ parameters. I tend to use the headset with my FTdx10.

      @@n4hnhradio Thanks for the quick reply, Doug. I set mine exactly like you did, with the exception of AMC being 85, and did a few tests with ears on. Mic EQ off sounded flat and unappealing (but like me), Mic EQ on sounded weird (and not like me), and Processor on 20 sounded great AND like me! The manual says processor can distort waveform, so not used in normal conversation, so I thought I'd experiment. I changed the Mic EQ settings to be exactly like P EQ settings, and it sounded a lot better and way more like me. Now, when I have processor on, it sounds like Mic EQ on steroids, or Mic EQ sounds like processor not on steroids, whichever way you want to think of it. After watching this vid for the 3rd time, I was thinking maybe that's what Billy meant by not sounding like "you," before you turned the processor on. Just thought I'd throw this out there in case it helps anyone. Also not sure if it's really "bad" to run the processor all the time anyway, as the manual makes it sound. Thanks for putting out such helpful content! My enthusiasm for this rig went up considerably after watching this vid.

      I always run my speech processor, but at 15. The processor makes a 100W radio sound about 3dB stronger. It helps hold the voice peaks. The processor level depends upon mic EQ and mic Gain, but I never go above 20. These settings assume a Yaesu hand mic. Different EQ parameters are required for Heil, Electrovoice, etc.

      There is no need to use a PC. There are 5 message memories. You can record 5 messages to an optional SD card. You must not use an SD card that holds more than 32GB. But you will be hard-pressed to fill a 32GB card. There is a Function menu popup for recording and playing back the messages. But I use the Yaesu FH-2 remote control to transmit the messages. I covered that in my FH-2 video.

    Thanks for your helpful Video. Goes far beyond the manual. I get the Idea of parametric EQs. Buit I find the concept of the compressor readings and the AMC control and ALC readings very confusing. I did not manage to get an TX audio setting the puts me around the power level that I expected (=20W on the PO Meter). No problem with FT8 though. I am writing this in Dec 2023 and I believe there was a SW update in the meantime. (Which I installed)

    • @n4hnhradio

The only thing I can conceive of there being wrong is the operator's antenna. However, this radio was dropped off the 18th of May. This radio has been ready for pickup for months. The telephone number left is defunct. I may play with the radio for awhile. I can not transmit, because I have no license. However, I can receive. I am going to experiment with it. From what I have read, it receives 30khz to 30Mhz then 50Mhz to 75Mhz, in all analogue modes and some digital modes. It may prove interesting. I just wonder what happened to the operator.

    Hi.. does AMC work when proc level is off ?

    • @n4hnhradio
      @n4hnhradio  4 месяца назад +1

      AMC is Automatic Mic-gain Control. It functions as a type of limiter. It functions whether the speech processor is enabled or not. The AMC helps prevent the splatter that results from overdriving an amplifier. Set it to a level that just barely yields 100W of SSB PEP, measured on a PEP meter. To be on the safe side, set AMC to the point where it limits your PEP to 95W. The sweet spot for the AMC is different between the FTdx10, FTdx101, and FT-710. I cover that in my menu optimizations documents.

      AMC acts as a limiter, to prevent distortion. Set it to the point where it just begins to limit the power output when you speak louder into the microphone. When speaking in a normal voice, you shouldn’t see any clamping. I use the power meter to set this because the COMP meter cannot be relied upon. Ultimately, it’s the PEP that gets limited. Since the power output meter functions as expected, it can be used as an alternate method for setting the AMC. Perhaps a future update will fix the COMP meter. The December update did not.

    Yaesu's menus are insane. With ICOM on the IC-7300 just adjust Bass and Treble and you're done! This video helps some but it's still far too complex. I just got off the air with a new 710 owner and another guy who has an 891. We spent 2 hours and still can't get rid of his bass. P PRMTC? Who ever heard of such nonsense? Yaesu hired clowns to design this.

    • @n4hnhradio
      @n4hnhradio  Год назад +8

      The Yaesu transceivers borrow from the music and broadcast industry by including fully adjustable parametric equalizers. There are two sets of them, so you can set up two different audio emphasis schemes. You aren’t limited to only a bass and treble level adjustment with a fixed center frequency and non-adjustable Q factor.
      You have 3 separate parametric equalizer settings (aka filters) for when you are not using the speech processor (PRMTRC) and another 3 for when you are using the speech processor (P PRMTRC). Each of the 6 filters allows you to select the center, level (gain), and Q factor (Yaesu calls it Width) for the low frequency, the mid frequency, and the high frequency. There are three filters for PRMTRC and 3 for P PRMTRC, totaling 6 filters.
      You can use the PRMTRC to tailor your TX audio for casual rag-chew quality audio and configure the P PRMTRC for breaking a DX pileup or contesting. By simply enabling the speech processor you alter your TX audio for more pileup busting audio.
      Furthermore, the parametric type equalizers allow you to adjust for a wider variety of microphone choices, providing you with enough flexibility to make just about any microphone sound great with the radio.
      The ICOM IC-7300 is a great radio for someone who is new and still learning the technology. The Yaesu radios have been described as a “thinking man’s radio.” Yaesu radios will require a little more dedication to digging in and understanding their vast array of capabilities. Their receivers and transmitters are quite honestly more capable but there is a steeper learning curve. You can have fun with an ICOM right now. You can have more fun with a Yaesu, but not until you have spent some quality time learning its full capabilities.

      Maybe they were referring to wearing headphones and listening to your audio while you adjust the equalization. The audio you hear from the headphones is from the DSP stage, before it is sent to the transmitter. Listening to how you sound in the headphones can help you get close to optimum equalization. However, it still doesn’t represent how you will sound to a listener, after you modulate your transmitter and your signal is demodulated by the receiver of the listener. Nonetheless, listening to your transmit audio through headphones can help you get close enough to later tweak for perfection over the air.
      After you are finished using the headphones, you should set the MONI level back to zero, to avoid feedback when you transmit.
