Very pleased you mentioned The Expanse! The CGI may have been a bit lacking in the early seasons, but it actually got crazy good later on. Combine that with very creative tactics, great characters, and incredible realism, and you've got a winning formula. The Roci vs the Pella from season 6 is hands down the best space battle of all time, and I will die on this hill.
Roci v Pella is awesome. I think that the spin station battle gave a better sense of the battlespace, with the station to move around and hide behind. I also think the fight at the end of season 5, against Drummer's fleet (sorta) and some of Marco's ships is the best fight overall, due to the complexity and how it pays off the plot elements.
Rogue One is a good pick. For the space dogfights, gotta give an extra shoutout to the Battlestar Galactica reboot. The Expanse is also probably the best thought out space combat that I can recall.

Oh, the end of Rogue One, the fight on the ground, in the air and in space.....yeah, that was freaking epic. Which, was also a bonus just to watch Darth Vader, being Darth Vader at the end.
Sopwith Camel You guys forgot to mention the iconic epic dogfight between French Flying Ace Charles Nungesser (flying his personal British Sopwith Camel fighter plane) and German Flying Ace Manfred von Richthofen (flying his bright red German Albatros D.III fighter plane) in a epic duel battle in the skies over the castle at St. Quentin scene from the 1995 TV Film "Young Indiana Jones and the Attack of the Hawkmen", which is absolutely..... SPECTACULAR!!!
They somewhat touched on it in the Battle of Britain segment before switching to compliment the music of that, but the way Macross and specifically an Itano Circus within them handles framing the relative motion of the planes/spaceships against a fixed, rotating, or floating viewpoint for the audience keeps them unparalleled at framing a dogfight for audiences. The animated pick they went with has many of the same aspects, so I'm happy with what they chose anyway.
If your saying the flare dispense button on F-18/F-14’s isn’t a on the side of the cockpit, you are only partially correct. The main dispense switch is lower in the cockpit. However, there is absolutely a secondary button on the side of the cockpit(in F-14 and 2 seat F-18 it’s in the back seat) meant for use during hard maneuvering where the pilot can’t move their hands from the controls. It’s meant to be tapped with an elbow. (20 years as an armament systems maintainer on both platforms)
Great list as always, though the Expanse subpar CGI commentary seemed more than unfair. They've had fantastic dogfight scenes, specially in the last two seasons.
Congratulations, finally a top ten that not only explains why its selection was mafe, but actually makes the most sense EVER! Thank you for including all forms of flying and all forms of air combat!
Their approach to in-space combat HAD to have been heavily influenced by BSG 2004. Elimination of the aerodynamic banking turn in space being one of the more obvious (good) things in common. I like that they both rely mostly on kinetic weapons, too.
Actually the red button they push in TopGun Maverick does deploy countermeasures. But it is the emergency dispense button, if you want to release all of your countermeasures in a hurry.
Battle of Britain is still my favorite aerial combat film. While I agree the final furball is the best in the movie, shout out to the earlier appearance of the polish fighter squadron who basically serve as a stand-in for all the foreign Squadrons that served in the battle, something that especially at the time Britain wasn't always good about acknowledging.
Outside RAF Northolt, where 303 Squadron was based, is the Polish War Memorial. As it's on the major road into London from the West, it is seen by millions every year, gets a name-check on the radio every time the traffic stops, has a duplicate on the side of the Thames in central London, and was the logo for a British comic called The Eagle for over twenty years. Everyone in the South of Britain remembers the poles. That Norwegians, Danes, Belgians, Czechs, French, Canadians, South Africans and many more also volunteered and fought in the Battle of Britain and some for longer than that is a little less well known.
Made my flippant comment before actually watching this excellent vid and was then reminded of upcoming Memorial Day. Salute to the fallen and their loved ones. One of the great things about Area 88 is that it portrays missiles more accurately than many "live action" movies do. Modern (since the 1950s) air-to-air missiles are *NOT* designed to impact the enemy aircraft. Sure, they often do against non-maneuvering targets, and are plenty destructive when they do. But they're designed specifically to simply get _close_ to the target then explode, showering the target in shrapnel. That can actually be *MORE* damaging than a direct hit. Area 88 shows this *MANY* times. The missiles just miss, yet they don't "fly right by", they explode, as they would in real life. And cause significant damage.
Lt. Fukai also does this in the beginning of Yukikaze, although in his case, he manually detonated the missile by hitting a secondary trigger on his joystick. The shrapnel rain eliminated the enemy aircraft but also damn near tore his own fighter to shreds too.
Problem is, the missiles they were using all had proximity fuses. Only the AIM-4 Falcon lacked A proxy fuse. However, this can be sort-of rectified by making those missiles defective, since they're mostly hand-me-downs from the USAF and USN
Wow, I never saw that movie, only played the computer game "Wings" when I was a teen. You get my like just for this great loveletter to the makers of the original movie "Wings."
I think the final battle from Macross Plus would be a pretty strong contender: A bitter 1v1 dogfight that starts off in the stratosphere and turns into a cat and mouse duel at street level, only to get turned upside-down when a third party enters the battle. Fighter jets, mecha combat, rogue AI, beams, missiles, bullets, and a good soundtrack on top. You had good picks, I just think it was worthy of special mention.
Great to see Area88 get some love. Pretty unrealistic most of the time, but I've always been impressed by the level of detail of the aircraft - even in the days before computer-assisted anime. The Great Waldo Pepper had a very good sequence, too (Waldo vs. Ernst Kessler). Sort of a "love letter" to aerial knighthood.
The scene with three biplanes from Wings at 02:08 knocked my socks off. It looks just as energetic and exciting as anything today. Amazing, considering it was a 1927 film. I can't imagine how they mounted their camera equipment to a chase plane for that.
I love Star Wars as much as anybody, but The space combat in Battlestar Galactica gives the best sense of momentum in a vacuum of anything. The brief clip they showed Focused on the big ships rather than the vipers where they should have
Not to mention that this video is named best dog fights in movies of all time and then iterally tell you how much dog fights sucked in Top Gun and and them they ranked it number 5. Because of thing that aren't related to dogfights...like...Tell me you're not getting paid without telling me you're getting paid.
The flying in Oblivion was particularly impressive IMO.. The planned shots took advantage of the (entirely theoretical of course) capabilities of that hybrid aircraft...
The fundamental problem with sci-fi dogfights is: you imagine far advanced technologies, surreal scales (let alone the true velocity of laser shots being the speed of light)... and than you basically cram it into the flight principles of WW1. But of course two space stations shooting at each other across the distance of planetary orbits, with shots travelling at the speed of light would not really make for a appealling show :)
Wish they would adapt 'Race of Aces' into a movie, just a great read couldn't put it down. It's about World War 2 U.S. Fifth Air Force fighter pilots Bong, McGuire, Kearby, Johnson and McDonald trying to break Rickenbacker's 26 kills of World War 1. Or a movie of Robin Olds or Ralph Hofer's life would be amazing
Great list, just a pity that Babylon 5 didn't get an honourable mention, especially since it was the first show to use realistic(ish) physics in space combat.
I'd say "The Last Starfighter" took the first real step, but B5 got the race running with how Starfuries were shown in combat. Then nuBSG picked up the baton.
The Wrath of Khan 'dogfight' is really a capital ship engagement, so I'd disqualify that from consideration. Otherwise, a great list. Nice to see The Great Waldo Pepper mentioned.
They didn't even mention the dogfight from the end of Wallace & Gromit: Curse of the Were-Rabbit. It's LITERALLY a fight between two dogs in planes. Disappointing.

@@WALTERBROADDUS That's exactly what he said. If I thought it worth my time, I'd go back and get the exact min and sec for you.
What a scatteredly prepared list
You get my like just for this great loveletter to the makers of the original movie "Wings."
super cool list...always love the cowboy bebop shout out, just a dance to jazz in space
You missed the dogfights in the Stargate series, check them out!
The scene with three biplanes from Wings at 02:08 knocked my socks off. It looks just as energetic and exciting as anything today. Amazing, considering it was a 1927 film. I can't imagine how they mounted their camera equipment to a chase plane for that.
Discoverer a ton of must watches from this one vid. Thanks!
Top Gun was a Navy recruitment tool, not the Air Force.
Yeah, they bloopered that comment.
@@gregoryhalpin3440 Yeah that stuck out to me like a sore thumb. But the list of movies is solid.
People likely applied to the Air Force anyway since well, audiences are dumb.
Understood..but somehow, he's right...the Air Force was the branch that saw the increase in recruitment after "Top Gun" came out.
@@leslauner5062 I can totally see that Americans couldn't grasp that the navy has airplanes
I'm glad Blue Thunder made it to this list. It was amazing then and it's still cool until now
Actually, it's still cool and will continue to be cool.
The music by William Walton for the final dogfight in " The battle Britain" is awesome .One of the best music and film combinations ever .
And yet it was the only part of his full score for the film that made the final cut.
@@chrismoule7242 ken goodwin did the rest .
I love Star Wars as much as anybody, but The space combat in Battlestar Galactica gives the best sense of momentum in a vacuum of anything. The brief clip they showed Focused on the big ships rather than the vipers where they should have
Also they called 'the Expanse' dated CGI ? It has the best space combat, especially some of the later seasons
Not to mention that this video is named best dog fights in movies of all time and then iterally tell you how much dog fights sucked in Top Gun and and them they ranked it number 5. Because of thing that aren't related to dogfights...like...Tell me you're not getting paid without telling me you're getting paid.
I always loved how the shuttles and star fighters actually used vents to change direction of the craft.
agreed. Starbuck takes on all eight! the battle at the end of the miniseries. just about everytime BSG did a dogfight it was great.
If you thought Top Gun was a recruitment ad for the Air Force, you didn't watch it hard enough 😅
You forgot to mention the Clint Eastwood 1982 film Firefox. It might not make your list, but at least deserves a mention.
The flying in Oblivion was particularly impressive IMO.. The planned shots took advantage of the (entirely theoretical of course) capabilities of that hybrid aircraft...
Same. And that's why I was very confident when I've learned Top Gun sequel will be shot by the same director.
The fundamental problem with sci-fi dogfights is:
you imagine far advanced technologies, surreal scales (let alone the true velocity of laser shots being the speed of light)...
and than you basically cram it into the flight principles of WW1.
- disses CGI dogfights
- proceeds to list a CGI dogfight as no 1
Glad you included Battle of Britain
Happy about the end o fthis list. Well deserved :D
“The best piece of recruitment propaganda… the Air Force never made.”
Got em!!
Great list, just a pity that Babylon 5 didn't get an honourable mention, especially since it was the first show to use realistic(ish) physics in space combat.
And the battle in "Into The Fire" is as epic as anything in a movie, even if the VFX were a bit primative.
I pointed this out in my comment before I read yours. They definitely should have considered B5.
@@glennblaylock5197
No worries.
The more the merrier
I'd say "The Last Starfighter" took the first real step, but B5 got the race running with how Starfuries were shown in combat. Then nuBSG picked up the baton.
Rogue one in big screen was breathtaking especially the look down scene towards the earth at low earth orbit
Fantastic list!
Personally I have a soft spot for the medical helicopter Vs jets dogfight from the opening of the A-Team movie
The Wrath of Khan 'dogfight' is really a capital ship engagement, so I'd disqualify that from consideration. Otherwise, a great list. Nice to see The Great Waldo Pepper mentioned.
