They really captured how overwhelmed you feel, how your nerves feel shot.. you don't know what to do.. and how overbearing anyone's voices seem, or how strange it is for people around you to be so happy and it doesn't touch you at all. I love classic movies, so personal in every way.
One of my favorite movies beside this one, "Love With A Proper Stranger" where she was nominated for an Oscar for playing Angela in a wonderful role of a single girl Italian role concern about being pregnant and wanting to solve this problem back in the early 60s. She was amazing in every word or non-talking word not said - that showed her talent with her eyes like Barbara Stanwyck. She learned from the best.
I feel so much like Deanie. This scene is an excellent way to show the agony and feeling of hopelessness and depression. I understand this all too well😢
We just watched "Splendor in the Grass" last night. Natalie Wood's performance was amazing. This scene, in particular, to me was just incredible acting!
If the Oscars that year were "political," Natalie Wood (Hollywood's darling) would have won. Instead, the awards went to Sophia Loren for the more difficult and complex work in "Two Women." Stop being a fan-mag-celeb star gazer and grow up into great acting.
Politics had nothing to do with it. Sophia Loren KILLED it in Two Women. There was no competition. Honestly, compare the two characters, compare the films/stories, Natalie didn't stand a chance. Although I do think this was some of Natalie's best work.
How could you not love Natalie Wood after watching this? It just shows what a great actress she actually was. Her beautiful face sometimes over shadowers her acting ability. She is the cutest, yet fitest woman I've ever seen. An angel 😇 xxx
Wesh Portillo It's just the way it was worded back then. Things were often implied instead of just saying it outright. The dark times, well, hell yes. A woman was considered 'spoiled' or 'ruined' for another man as far as getting married if it became known she wasn't a virgin. Even in The Color Purple, when Ceily's stepfather was trying to get her married off, he tells "Mister" (Danny Glover) that she was 'spoiled though"..............who would ever think to say that about a man?
Wesh Portillo If it seems that dark to you it’s because it was dark. The abandoned young woman to a sullied reputation or worse, an unwed mothers home were the phobic fears of every mother and father then.
@@MegaBaddog I never really heard much about the father just that her mom was the one who pushed her to go through with acting no matter the cost. Even when she was sexually assaulted by a casting director
@@monsterascanbe5170 No, it was an older, married famous actor, who only died a couple of years ago aged 103. It occurred in the summer of 1955, when she was aged 15 and he was 38 years old. Wood's sister said during a podcast about her Wood's life that the attack had occurred inside the Chateau Marmont and went on "for hours". Apparently it was brutal and violent.
As a father of a 13 year old beauty and as an actor (she being one also), I'm actually tearing up on this performance by Natalie, so rich, so authentic.
This movie cemented my admiration and Natalie became my favorite actress, will always be...I love this scene. Remembering a legend. Forever Natalie xoxo. Thanks for the upload!
Ten out of ten in every single way. Fantastic actress and gorgeous as can be. Natalie Wood "Twiit Twoo" Gorgeous and way before your time xx 😍❤️xxxxxxx
I loved her acting and personaality so much , her very name was iconic to me Splender in the Grass was Natalies crowning glory indeed she deserved the Academy Award for the movie. This scene was a little close to home cause it was similiar to a situation in my growing up too, she put her heart and soul into this character ... her untimely death was terrible. RIP NATALIE
I've hated WEST SIDE STORY for years. For one thing, none of the actors in the cast could sing the score; they even had to dub Rita Moreno and she was a singer! As for Natalie Wood, the skin darkening makeup was not only unnecessary, it was way too obvious and made it impossible to forget you were watching a performance.
Saw this in Film Study in High School and I loved it so much. Sad, but maybe that's why it had such an effect on me. The memory of this film has never really left me. It's possible that they left the bath tub scene out for school viewing because I don't remember it.
To me Natalie Wood was one of the best damn actors of her generation that came through the the Golden Age of Hollywood. She worked so hard to be one of the finest actors that never got the kind of respect she deserves. I was devastated when she died due to her drowning accident. It broke my heart. RIP Natalie - I miss you.
a wonderful scene by Natalie...brilliant acting at it's best....Natalie had a troubled relationship with her own mother, who was a very controlling person... wonder if she borrowed from that for this scene..
June Lynn I'm sure she did. That is why it comes across so real. Her mother forced her into acting at the age of 4! All because the family needed money and she saw that her daughter was a beauty and totally took advantage of a poor little 4 year old. Like being sold into slavery! When I see Natalie Wood in any of her movies, I just feel extreme sadness for this beautiful, talented but lost soul.
Anita Zenobia I'm sad too when I think of her as a little girl being used by her mother like that...but I'm still grateful to have all of her wonderful movies...so tragic how her life ended at 43....and eerie considering her lifelong fear of water...Natalie was so special and I miss her : (
Actors during this period of films, used the "Method". A technique of using your own life to animate the character. So, yes, she probably used her own mother for the emotion needed for this scene.
This is one of the most intense scenes in Film History I've ever seen. Miss Wood, the Academy Award for Best Actress in 1961 belongs to you! Thanks for so much talent. Also thanks Mr. Kazan, Mr. Inge and Mr. Beatty. You all built a real masterpiece.
She's not acting.....it's how she felt in real life, she had an experience in real life where her Mom made her break up with her boyfriend, he tried to commit suicide, she wanted to tell her mom she hated her & the Director made her take off a bracelet hiding her bump on her wrist she had a phobia of showing the wrist to anyone & a phobia of water so bad she couldn't put her head under water, so she was totally freaking out & Kazan knew all of that & used it for the film.
You cannot "use" your personal stuff like that without being an actor/actress and act upon how you feel. She as you can see is saying lines and living moment to moment truthfully, and that's called acting
the bump on her wrist was a scar from breaking her wrist on set. she was supposed to be on a bridge over water that was rigged to collapse and she was scared so her mother told her it wasn’t going to... the bridge collapsed and she fell and broke her wrist; it didn’t heal right. she was only 10 years old 😔
The expectation for looks in 40+ year old actors has just changed over time, a lot. You always see 45 year old women in films who look to be in their early 30s because they've gotten a lot of work done.
I have watched this wonderful film quite a few times and each time I get a new perspective on the characters. For example, the 'easy' Juanita: At first she seems like a real bitch, but if you look at her face in the classroom scene when Deanie (Natalie Wood) breaks down and sobs as she attempts to explain the meaning of Wordsworth's poem, you can see that Juanita feels guilty and ashamed of herself. Then there is Deanie's Mum who insists that Deanie does not give Bud her virginity until Bud has put a wedding ring on her finger. The Mum comes across as strict and almost cruel.....BUT.......how often is it the case that rich guys use poor class girls for sex and then dump them to marry some girl from a wealthy family? You see, Deanie's Mum knows this and she was simply trying to protect her daughter. Also the sad and haunting scene at the end when Deanie goes to see Bud one last time and she meets Bud's wife and baby son. The wife sees the way that Bud and Deanie are looking at each other and she KNOWS that her husband is still deeply in love with Deanie and that she, his wife, will ALWAYS be second best. Imagine how heartbreaking that must be for a wife to know.......and as for Deanie and Bud........well, they will ALWAYS have regrets and they will always love each other, but as the words of the beautiful poem say: "Nothing can bring back the hour of splendour in the grass or glory in the flower." In other words, Deanie and Bud can never recapture what they once had...........it is gone forever and they must now both 'find strength in what remains behind.' Beautiful and tragic film.
Actually the real bitch in this movie is the mother. "Did he spoil you?" in-DEED. Americans of this era were the biggest hypocrites where sex was concerned.
I can see what you mean Scott......that mother was scary! But remember that this was a time when a young girl's virginity was very important. Deanie's mum knew that a rich boy like Bud could easily have sex with her daughter and then dump her....not to mention leaving her possibly pregnant, which would in fact make Deanie 'Damaged Goods'. Today this kind of attitude seems prehistoric and hard to understand......but in 1920s Kansas, Deanie's mum BELIEVED that she was protecting her daughter. Thankfully times have changed.
@@lorrainesmith4279 hmm. How can you say thankfully times have changed? Do you think it’s right and morally responsible for so many girls to be unwed and have babies?
Her messy relation with her real mum must have helped her in this for sure... Her left wrist... i hurt for her. Her mother is responsible for this. God i love her !
C Jeanne-Marie Also her tragic young love with James Dean, an equally memorable actor, her co star, who died in a car accident, preceding her role in Splendour, I think added poignancy and nuance to her performance.
Many of us nice girls get dumped and don't deserve it. He wanted her back at the dance but she wasn't listening. She was confused and didn't know what Bud wanted. She tried to seduce him but he said no, not like this. You're a nice girl Deanie. That is how she lost Bud in the first place is by being a nice girl. She needed help but here was no help. Bud needed to grow some balls which is something he never grew. First chick that would listen to his problems and not try to get into bed with him, he married.
Like the other poster said that is the reason she got dumped. And also because she listened to her parents. She thought she was doing the right thing by being what you thought was a respectable young woman. That's the fine line that we have to learn to walk. And if you don't do what is expected of you you might just end up alone. Her desperation in the scene and her anger toward her parents for respressing her and then asking if she was spoiled. Infuriating frustrating and so heartbreaking
I heard in an interview about Natalie wood that this acting in the tub when she freaks out to be precise reflected her real personal life especially with her mother I wonder if it’s true
Her parents didn't understand but they did love her. They pulled their money out from what they were making in the stock market to pay for her to stay in a place sort of like a therapy rehab place. If they hadn't pulled their money out when they did they would have lost it in the crash of '29. So it sort of all worked out for them. Bud's dad lost it all in the crash and committed suicide. Great movie!
It's funny how when the character Bub, finds out that his dad was dead, he didn't show much grief, in that scene of the movie ( Splendor in the grass).
I actually think he felt a weight off his shoulders. I mean, he did literally everything his father told him to, he couldn't really live life his own way, he even lost Deanie because of it.
The last scene in the movie where she goes to visit Bud ( Warren Beatty) at his farm with his wife and kids is some of the best actting from both of them. Very understated. You've got to see the end of the movie.......She is very under rated, just like many great beauties. This includes Marlyn M.
Nope. She did the whole thing precisely because she knew the water plus mommy issues as well as having to show off her bad wrist were going to fuel her performance. You can feel it. She's totally in this moment- I don't think she ever quite hits something like this again.
jeremyud That’s right, Jeremy. She was terrified but did it anyway adding to the vulnerability, the wrist exposed, and anger and rage was the result- And, Kazan gave her permission to cry or not- just “as long as you know what you are feeling...it’s going to be moving.” And, she just felt the emotion, and spontaneously created that whole believable breakdown scene.
If that weird, pervert father of Bud’s had stayed out of it, he and Deenie would have been married; that was what they both wanted. I saw Splendor in the Grass as a young girl but didn’t understand it. Now, as an adult, I do. I Love it. Not many movies can pull off the brutal, raw, cavalier parental assassination of their children’s souls as this one did. It would not have been half what is was without Natalie and Warren. I also loved her in This Property Is Condemned and Love With The Proper Stranger.
Sara Wilkinson yes; sometimes it hurts to understand things. Sometimes you wonder what the point of finally getting it was if it’s too late. I agree with you about the final scene. Every time I watch it, I find myself hoping against all hope that they won’t have to do without each other. “Are You happy?” She asks him. Such a direct, heart question. “I don’t think about it” he replies. Dead honest. They both knew they would love each other always. As they said goodbye.
wish there was an uneditted directors ccut of this movie. That the lady speaking to natily in the tub deserves an oscar to be able to act that way while seeing the beauty like that & keep a perfectly uneffected straight face.
Her parents are controlling and won't let her be the free and passionate person she wants to be -- they won't let her grow up. It's about the double standard of society that won't let women be sexual beings. And the irony is she didn't even do anything with him.
That double standard doesn't exist anymore. And if anything that societal norm was there to protect women from unwanted pregnancies and being slighted by society that were promiscuous as it is known that women don't have the biological need for many sexual partners where men do.
@@Blood0cean it was there to control women and is still there in varying degrees depending in what social context you are. Also the idea that women naturally don't want or go for many different men is patriarchal propaganda to shame women for their sexuality and excuse men for cheating. Human beings are sexual in nature all these rules and regulations are not biologically based but based in politics, culture and religion
Elia Kazan was a fink, but American cinema has never known a greater director of actors. That includes not just male actors like Brando, Dean and Clift, but women: Natalie, Lee Remick and Jo Van Fleet, among others, gave the best performances of their careers for Kazan.
Maybe Kazan wasn't such a "fink" after all. Actors loved his direction. And he escaped from the totalitarian regimes of Europe and understood the twin evils of Fascism and Communism,
Cliff Trainor Are you dumb she did NOT lack in the size, she was perfect the way she was, for your information she was a woman, it’s perfectly normal for women to be petite
Performing theater in the Philippines is such a hunger game. I had to turn into business in order to support my artist life. And now I'm just focused on the business coz it takes so much time. Do you think I'm doing the correct thing?
I am seeing some rude comments. it's very rude and tacky to pit 2 women against each other! each woman is of course attractive in her own way. Also, overrated doesnt mean attractive. BEAUTY IS TIMELESS AND SO ARE BEAUTFUL FEATURES!! Certain faces are more beautiful than others in all cultures (irrespective of the race/ethnicity of the person being evaluated and the race/ethnicity of the evaluator). You can visit Bedouins in the Middle East, the Yanomamo in the Amazon, and Inuits in the Canadian north, and they will all agree as to who is or is not beautiful (based on facial features). Clear skin is a universal preference. Certain morphological features that connote masculinity (square jaw) or femininity (high-cheek bones) are universally preferred. The beauty of a woman's eyes are in the size and the shape. Even though brown eyes have depth(Natalie Woods,Jessica Simpson, etc) the size and the shape contribute to overall feminine beautiful eyes. Look at anime girls, Disney princesses, etc all have big beautiful eyes. Even babies can tell an attractive face...Natalie Woods is attractive! PERIOD! I hate when a woman is complimented there are inadequate ppl talking trash! Audrey Hepburn seems to be a cult fav amongst fashion obsessed wannabe models. Youw ill see Audrey's "Breakfast at Tiffany's" poster in many NYC studio apartments! she is a fashion icon! dont confuse that with automatic beauty, especially to say more attractive than Natalie?? BLASPHEMY!
It's not bad for a hysterical outburst scene. And it's probably Natalie Wood's best work, but that year Sophia Loren gave the best performance in a move. Not just because the stupid Oscar was awarded to her, either. You want to watch an acting lesson, watch "Two Women."
At the end of the day, Ms. Loren's well-earned Academy Award for a cast-against type dramatic role is not in jeopardy. It could be argued that actress Anna Magnani ('The Rose Tattoo', 1955) was at the time another great - recognized also for "her dynamic and forceful portrayals of earthy lower-class women". Not to polemicise, but most of us come here to appreciate Natalie Wood's performance (also nominated for a 1961 Oscar), which impacted those of us who recall it vividly still. Allow us to enjoy it without encouraging competitiveness unnecessarily.
The remarks about poor Natalie Wood being robbed of awards for this film is what some of us get kind of sick about. In this movie you might notice that Natalie Wood is outclassed by the likes of the great Barbara Loden and other really fine actors who simply were not movie stars.
I admire Ms. Loren; she was great in 'Two Women', which I saw when it came out. Her Academy Award WAS well-earned...she can do drama, romance and comedy, and, YES! Natalie Wood was not as good an actress as Ms. Loren. HOWEVER, again: it's safe to say that most of us did not come here looking for a competition between Ms. Wood and Ms. Loren; we should be allowed to appreciate Natalie Wood's performance in this sequence of 'Splendor in the Grass'... Let us to enjoy it without the distraction of obsessive discord.
unclealand How many times do you feel the need to say this? This is the 4th or 5th time by my count. And every time you manage to get a little dig in at Natalie. We get it, you have an underlying dislike of her for some reason. I've seen "Two Women." Sophia Loren was fantastic in it. I've seen "Splendor in the Grass." Natalie Wood was every bit as great.

Yeah, the irony is that Bud ends up poor. Deanie's parents are well-off, and Deanie's about to live the life of a doctor's wife in Cincinnati.
The last scene in the movie where she goes to visit Bud ( Warren Beatty) at his farm with his wife and kids is some of the best actting from both of them. Very understated. You've got to see the end of the movie.......She is very under rated, just like many great beauties. This includes Marlyn M.
I was her no1 fan. Natalies acting, and her personality was incomparable, her death was a tragedy ,RIP
Natalie
Natalie Wood could act the best freak outs of any actress I have ever seen.
The most beautiful classic Hollywood actress my hazel eyes have ever seen. Marilyn, eat your heart out.
wow this is so amazing...what an actress.
This movie is life. Reality is we are very complicated individuals. RIP
Deanie was so heartbroken and she has a nervous breakdown.. 💔💔💔💔
She has always been my favorite movie girl.
The parents would drive me nuts too.
Natalie Wood at her acting best in this scene this film has many iconic moments but the highlight is this scene and what it achieves.
Great performance!
A REAL Leading Lady! :)
I love this movie 🥰
great movie
A stand-in for the bathtub head-bobbing part, no doubt. She was terrified of going underwater.
Nope. She did the whole thing precisely because she knew the water plus mommy issues as well as having to show off her bad wrist were going to fuel her performance. You can feel it. She's totally in this moment- I don't think she ever quite hits something like this again.
jeremyud That’s right, Jeremy. She was terrified but did it anyway adding to the vulnerability, the wrist exposed, and anger and rage was the result- And, Kazan gave her permission to cry or not- just “as long as you know what you are feeling...it’s going to be moving.”
And, she just felt the emotion, and spontaneously created that whole believable breakdown scene.
@@jeremyud If you're so sure about that. Think I'll read up on it anyway if I can find a reliable source.
@@shodanart interesting. She was an excellent actor.
Natalie wood is a very good actress, I can understand what she's going threw.
wish there was an uneditted directors ccut of this movie. That the lady speaking to natily in the tub deserves an oscar to be able to act that way while seeing the beauty like that & keep a perfectly uneffected straight face.
This is an uncomfortable scene to watch even now; imagine how it was seen in 1961!
she looks pretty
Understatement of the decade.
Wood was nominated for a best actress Oscar for SITG. Elizabeth Taylor won for Butterfield 8. SITG won best screenplay.
Her parents are controlling and won't let her be the free and passionate person she wants to be -- they won't let her grow up. It's about the double standard of society that won't let women be sexual beings. And the irony is she didn't even do anything with him.
the mother acts like she's Crazy!!!
Rene AMEN
Elia Kazan was a fink, but American cinema has never known a greater director of actors. That includes not just male actors like Brando, Dean and Clift, but women: Natalie, Lee Remick and Jo Van Fleet, among others, gave the best performances of their careers for Kazan.
Maybe Kazan wasn't such a "fink" after all. Actors loved his direction. And he escaped from the totalitarian regimes of Europe and understood the twin evils of Fascism and Communism,
Splendor in the grass, grand film.
She's gorgeous
That dinner looks delicious! That gravy on the meat and potatoes just makes my mouth water. How could Deanie not chow that down?!
When you're dumped, you can't eat.
We miss you Natalia Nikolaevna. :(
Conosco tutto di questo
Film molto triste.
Veramente triste.
1961.
L'America.
This is what i mean!!! Natalie, in my view, made it true [for herself]a❤
Holy shit.
Me. Having a panic attack/discasociatting and freaking out my parents.
Poor Deanie she didn’t deserve to get hurt that way
Siempre he pensado q esta escena demuestra lo q es ser actriz
Natalie was gorgeous.
Morality of the story makes your choice ...don’t let anyone drive your life even your parents
She was small, but what she lacked in size she made up for with attitude.
Cliff Trainor Are you dumb she did NOT lack in the size, she was perfect the way she was, for your information she was a woman, it’s perfectly normal for women to be petite
A R - actually even for a woman she was extremely tiny. She was only 5 feet tall! But for such a little lady she had an immense presence.
Performing theater in the Philippines is such a hunger game. I had to turn into business in order to support my artist life. And now I'm just focused on the business coz it takes so much time. Do you think I'm doing the correct thing?
this the movie that convinced me Winona Ryder is the 90s Natalie Wood coz wow do they look similar and given similar roles (teens run amok)
What a beautiful women ..never seen her before .the film looks quite old .... Natalie wood...she's lovely ❤️ Melanie 32 🌈
Nice film
Rest In Power, Natalie.
Robert Wagner did it.
BLASPHEMY!
We certainly get Nats mood.
I thought this scene was a real laugh; great chuckles. Some people take it seriously! Spoiled? Spoiled? LOL. Natalie was hot stuff.
I watched the whole movie just now, and now I am depressed.
Lol many pretending actresses need to watch what acting is about with this golden scene
That mother. LOLOL!
2:46 *This scene is so intense in the movie*
Splendor in the Grass
I see why I never knew her I was a kid when she died
Omg
You missed the best part when Natalie ( or her stunt woman) runs down the hall!
@@mauricioduron3193 Natalie Wood was every bit the actress that Sophia Loren was. Other than that, everything you said was spot on.
unclealand How many times do you feel the need to say this? This is the 4th or 5th time by my count. And every time you manage to get a little dig in at Natalie. We get it, you have an underlying dislike of her for some reason. I've seen "Two Women." Sophia Loren was fantastic in it. I've seen "Splendor in the Grass." Natalie Wood was every bit as great.
My boyfriend and his mom were freaking out and had to show me his scene because I Look and sound just like her I guess
No tf you dont lol
Rj killed her
Looks like she took a lesson from James Dean in “ the rebel without a cause when he lost it was an argument with his dad .
