Basically what you are witnessing are two of the greatest musicians of all time if not the greatest guitarist and bass player.
You correct...music is subjective on many levels, but if there is another bass player or guitarist that are better that Joe Pass and NHOP I have personally never seen heard or seen them...I also love when NHOP played with Oscar Peterson who for me stands alone as a piano player in his genre and is one of the greatest piano players ever from any genre and that is saying something...God blessed our ears when he gave us these men.
Beato brought me, amazing video!
Your not alone my friend! It’s hard to find words for this cat.👍
me too
Me three!
@@brianbiviano6356 Me IV
Me 5.
Joe Pass had such a great sense of rubato and had such a beautiful pianistic approach to the guitar.
If you know about Joe Pass’ childhood his father pushed him to practice guitar for hours upon hours on a daily basis. At some point, if you spend your life working at something as much as Joe Pass did on the guitar, you are going to internalize it. The ones that make it look the easiest are the ones that work the hardest.
funny, to me somebody like Pasquale Grasso has a "pianistic approach", and JP has a guitaristic one with the rest stroke picking and all
@@guidemeChrist joe is better
Believability
@@guidemeChrist I agree. I would rather say that good pianists that make their instrument sing are guitar-like.
I love his sound so much, Joe's guitar and Niels' standing bass. My dad used to work as road manager for Oscar Peterson so I have seen these cats play live a lot, they even came to dinner at our house when they played the famous North Sea Jazz festival in the Netherlands. Thanks for sharing !!
Marcus Goedvolk YOU LUCKY MAN!
Hello man, thanks for your anecdotes, could you tell me why they call them cats , it is something that I usually see, thanks
@@ganid1889 late nights with the gang, always slick and intricate just like a black cat 😎
@@ganid1889 That's a name Satchmo ( Louis Armstrong ) called all fellow musicians.
As a fellow Dutchman im very jealous haha! What an awesome story.
Man, NHOP was an unbelieavable beast. I am speechless, literally.
The best double bassist ever!
Samba petit ran invisible tears down my eye
yup,-
The most brilliant guitarist, the most brilliant bassist!
I like that Joe has taken of his left shoe, so not to make noice when tapping his foot.
I especially like the fact that you noticed that.
@EZ Z I made a screenshot, he wears both his shoes.
@EZ Z You guys are blind you can clearly see the shoe is off at 4:20 onward.
@@Roogbass Were you looking at the same RUclips video?
@@stuart8663 yes, I made a screenshot of his feet. Can you show me one without shoes? But it doesn’t matter, wonderful performance!
It’s a shame I can only ‘like’ this once, thank you for sharing
"He is not playing the bass; he IS the bass"....
30:20 didn't expect that portrait of tracy quote!
@@ross311 I doubt it, this is from the early 90s and portrait was recorded in the mid 70s. :)
@@ross311 No, much later (original was 1976, wow I feel old) but a lot of ppl say that Jaco got that technique from NHOP but idk. So cool to hear, amazing player!
@@ross311 No way my friend
Just shows you the depth a bass has. It can be a rhythm instrument or a lead. Makes no difference in the hands of the right user. Love how they don't step all over each other and compliment each other beautifully. Joe was the greatest!
You’re so spot on!
Been a massive fan of Niels since the Oscar Peterson days. Incredible performance with Joe.
PURE GENIOUS. I SOUND LIKE I PLAY WITH BOXING GLOVES ON NOW THAT I HEARD THIS. BUT I DO HAVE JOE'S FACIAL EXPRESSIONS DOWN PERFECT. .THANKYOU FOR THIS MUSICAL GIFT.
the stank face is all that matters
Starting at 27:47 is Niels-Henning Orsted Pedersen soloing for several minutes. Extraordinary, miraculous, breathtaking are a few of the superlative adjectives that are just adequate. I had heard him on CD's, but nothing like this solo - including part of a Bach solo cello composition. And at 38:12, his lead into the next number - he plays with his instrument. He is simply not replaceable. This entire concert is a revelation - sincere thanks for uploading it. RIP Neils-Henning and hope you are with Joe and all the other jazz greats in an eternal jam session.
THEY ARE TOGETHER NOW, I KNOW IT!!
Or at 30:21, where he quotes Portrait of Tracy - Unbelievable musician - Unique
Joe Pass turns Wish Upon a Star into a fingerstyle chord melody masterpiece. Then his walking bass lines on They Can’t Take That Away from Me! Needed NHOP to surpass those!!
nhop is beyond amazing he was briefly brought down to earth...from i know not where...to blow our minds...which amply he did....
NHOP, I will carry on your legacy of being a dynamic upright bass player. Thank you for being one of the greatest inspirations for our kind, and Joe Pass of course being the talent he was to lead this wonderful art we call jazz!
Matt073 cheers bro! as a guitar player I want to say the same for Joe Pass! Wish you good luck in your music career!
@@nevermindidontknow thank you I appreciate it very much. Finally came back to the video to see a nice response, I wish you the exact same my fellow musician. There are so many amazing players out there, unheard and my hope is for us all to emerge one day and bring our world a little bit closer together. Best of luck to you and may our paths cross :)
Arguably, the world's two greatest musicians on their instruments at that time.
Timeless. A piece a two genius of Jazz history.
On what planet was Niels born on? Jesus the man was gifted beyond equal.
Right?...You must be a bassist. Takes one to be awed by "The Great Dane" play on.
Niels did thing´s that Jaco did on the electric- but 15 year`s before , on the upright ! -
Kæreste goe goe Niels Henning , du er savnet ...... 😥💪🤸♂️🥰
Well, this concert was after Jaco, Niels obviously took some inspiration from jaco and vise versa. Check out NHOP playing autumn leaves. He opens up by playing Jaco’s chromatic fantasy on upright, which is insanely difficult
Jaco got a distinctive tone from his J Bass, at times reminiscent of an upright, and it is hard not to notice a similarity to the tone of NHOP.
I saw Joe at the Blackstone Grill in Chicago, simply the best jazz guitarist ever. Niels is just a great bassist. I'm 64 and have been playing piano for 59 years, these guys are amazing/
You are correct sir and you are probably a good piano player by now lol
If you got to see Joe in a nice little club and he was in a good mood you will never forget it if you're a truly dedicated musician
If I had shoes like Joe I'm sure I could play those smooth lines .
a wet dream for lofi beat producers right here
6 minutes in and I’m here to the finish. Wow!
That comment says it all! 👍🙂
IL N'EST JAMAIS ASSEZ, D'ENREGISTRER, LA 'QUALITÉ SUMMUMM', DE JOE PASS ET NIELS PEDERSEN...!!! LES 2 FONT UN SEUL ENSEMBLE 'BODY AND SOUL' !!! ILS NOUS MANQUENT ÈNORMÉMENT!!! CERTAINEMENT SONT EN TRAIN DE JOUER DANS L'UNIVERS COSMIQUE. Directement de Salvador-Bahia-Brasil. Un Fan, que Jamais les Oubliera!!!
Joe's my personal jazz guitar hero... together with Wes :-)
You're just going to have to share him
You sure it's not some eye tallion thing
My friend
I remember hearing their album ‘chops’ many moons ago and simply floored me.. still does. Magic
Joe has such a nice tone.
Ibanez not Gibson!
I met him, along with Ray Brown. They were both very nice.
I love those poets on guitar and bass; they are my favorite, and I often feel sad they have passed away so prematurely. I hope they have reborn as musical geniuses again...somewhere in a parallel galaxy or universe.
13:15 to 13:25 they both get LICCed. Thanks Neely for making me hear that everywhere.
Distinct LICC variation at 12:35
Wonderful!
Stella by Starlight!
The best duet forever . Two absolutly virtuoses make unforgeteble mood . Just great . 💥
You know... people study these two guys. And people who study music and don't know about them, or don't know much about jazz, they get astonished.
What an ear Neils has.
Music is one thing, NHOP is another
So, so good... I love the singing tone of NHØPs bass. Pass is pretty decent too 😀 Jazz in Peace, Per (DK)
Thanks, Gill. My dad's favorite instrument was the guitar. I always regretted being a violinist and my grandmother a concert pianist and conservatory professor. :^)
He can play bass, piano, and guitar all in one... he is truly a virtuoso
It's never too late to discover the great Joe Pass. I think he and Wes Montgomery are jamming this very moment in the Great Beyond. And this long-named bassist must be the G.O.A.T. of not-famous sidemen.
Beautifully done, two greats with such a deep rooted understanding of music evoking memories, emotions, stirring up an ocean of thoughts. Needless to say this is true music, instead i will depart asking that you share your own as they did. Whatever instrument it may be or skill as well, stay in tune with what is you
Joe was such an amazingly gifted talent.
Love Joe. One of the greatest to ever pick up the guitar.
James Ciccone I’m 66 and have been playing since the age of 9. I feel so small when I hear Pass play. That’s why we call all of these guys Masters. And as far as I know, Joe could fart better music than I could ever play, but I keep trying because he inspires me. The magic of the Master keeps pulling me along😎
Samba Petit - Immense Mr. Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen.
Beautiful music. Beautiful, wonderful, witty, conversational, welcoming.
Thank you for posting this.
That Bass sounds great
Joe Pass... what a man!!!
THAT OLEO!! People love talking about Jacó's funk. You can't tell that isn't the funkiest bass line! AND it's on a double!!
He did stuff on the upright that make Jaco look like a nontanted bum -on electric .....(i dont mean that litterally - i LOVE Jaco.....but..😎)
Wow this is one of the most impressive upright bass playing i've ever seen
I like the guitar sound here. Always love his playing.
Why can't these gentlemen still be around to delight us?
A big thank you Joe Pass & NHOP. Great!
FANTASTIC♥FOREVER。joe
Whenever I see them, my first thought is always my accountant and math teacher sure are good.
O maior guitarrista que já ouvi. Exímio na execução de variados e dificílimos acordes, em consonância com uma rica harmonia. Som limpíssimo!!!
Absolutely bloody marvellous.
WOW Bravo !!!!!
First time I listen to electric guitar and base only together.Frigging fantastic! Am an drummer myself in my younger days. Never had the chance to listen to guitar and base alone together. Always in solos as part of bigger bands. Awesome ! Thanks for sharing!
thank you!
NØHP is a Beast! 🎻
seen several videos with them. it must have been terifying for them both to improvice together. not knowing what came next but what ever came it would be the best , and you would have to play your best ever to hang on. thanks for posting
Two of the greatest!!
So glad the quality is good, thanks for posting great video amazing tones, blending together.
Oh how seeing this video tape in the early 90's would have given me a whole new depth to my guitar studies. So much depth and dimension in this music. Close your eyes, listen only with your mind.
Master class
Tremendous! Once in a life time talents. Thanks.
"Sir, what do you do for a living?" "Me? I stand around a lot of the time fondling strings and people are amazed."
DOIS MONSTROS, DOIS DEUSES...
That's about as good as it gets... Honestly!!!
All is magic , but From (18:50) to (19:15) is over magic!
Im Living in Denmark and have seen NHØP 3 times . In his own league at this standing bass !
The only religion that delivers.
Don't ever remember hearing music played on a diuble bass before. Astonishing. Truly astonishing. Loved the cameo tributes to JSB too.
I was disoriented when the video started in Italian. I was just writing a note in Portuguese and was still thinking in Portuguese. I knew I could almost understand what was being said, but I just couldn't sync with it. Then it clicked...italiano! Now it made sense. Joe Pass, along with Joe Venuti, two of my favorite Italian jazz musicians! This is a great video. Thanks for uploading it.
Fantástico!!! 👏👏👏👏👏
joes solo is at the start is sublime
As someone who occasionally has dabbled with a double bass and has an appreciation for what a beast it is to play, I'm truly blown away by how awesome his playing is.
Dedication to mastery of his art on the double bass.
Eterno Joe Pass! Esteja com Deus!!!
Absolutely amazing. No words..to say as did ...
My Joe Pass Emperor II brought me here. :)
You're sure your Labrador didnt bring you here lol
Thanks for posting
Just two Giants doin their thing-love it.
Don't think I've ever heard music played on a double bass before. Astonishing. Loved the cameo tribute to JSB.
Some kind of great magic between Joe and Niels here. A magic that only astoundingly good musicians can conjure. Joes guitar is way too low in the mix for most of the performance but then towards the end at about 40:26 he turns his guitar up and finally the balance between the two instruments is much improved. Shame it came so late but it won’t stop this becoming a ‘must listen’ performance for all jazz students and wannabes for eternity. Many thanks to Gill & Jazz Transcriptions for uploading
Amazingly beautiful, playing, love his tone. What do i have to know to play like this. Everything.
Le doy gracias a la vida por la existencia de esta grabación.
Absolute fire from two geniuses at work. Thank you so much for posting!
Grandissimi, indimenticabili!
19:32 this part after the amazing db solo sticks out. Low reigster- warm chords from the bass while joe pass plays very linearly. What an amazing comob joe pass stays above the rest!
Yes, I saw Niels strum the beautiful chord progressions in duet with Mulgrew Miller on piano at Ronnie Scott's many years ago. My friend and I had the pleasure of spending an hour or so with NHOP in the downstairs bar during the interval break. I remember we were all drinking bloody marys ! Have a photo somewhere of us all sitting down together. Never got the chance to see Joe live but he remains my favourite jazz guitarist - and there are a great many to choose from....
Sublime.
He is still playing in haven. God bless you.
NHOP is the bass😳 mind blowing
just. beautiful.
Beato was right, again. NHOP is amazing, so is Pass
Unbelievably Wonderful!
Niels' best standing bass player there ever was!
His intonation was perfect!
@@MrMrh1958 was going to mention his superb intonation!
He was an upright citizen
Just awesome & amazing!
He just kind of melted into it!
So good. Time when Rai had excellent program.
Thank you so much! I'm so happy to hear Joe Pass play the guitar so skillgully.
