Like your style Kris. Good to see people like you getting the TI message out there. Im 53 yrs old and only began learning swimming Oct last yr. I am learning the "TI" way and am very grateful for the development of this method. Still early in my TI journey but now enjoy swimming for the 1st time in my life !
Save energy and very efficient method, I have reborn my swimming efficiency . Never tired I can swim long distance almost fast without tiring.. I have lost twenty years swimming in wrong system. Thank you very much. Luca
I am 46 years old and just begun swimming a few months ago. This is the only style that works well for me in regards to energy expenditure. It's the only way I can go across the pool without panting; it's all in the gliding.
These critics have absolutely no idea what they are talking about Kris, this is a wonderful display of TI. BTW he may look like he is turning too much but the hips stay in a nice position meaning that the cause of the shift is his natural thoracic mobility being controlled by the nervous system to adjust and respond as needed. TI is a revolutionary approach to the water and if executed correctly yields remarkable results in little to no time. Everyone always says this but relaxation is the key. The more muscles you turn turn off the easier you move and glide through the water. This video rocks man, nice job!
thanks a million Chandler, I honestly don't mind crytcisim, as long as it is backed by any form of reasoning ;) TI certainly works, there are some arguments against how fast it can be but the truth is that it can be fast it's just that most ti swimmers are happy enough with the efficency of it so they don't progress to rigorous temp training, but TI certainly can be fast too. Technique itself isn't that much different from any other form any freestyle technique based on front quadrant but the teaching process and TI methodology is just superb. specialy where compared to standard old school fs teaching methods that usually overlook fundamentals. And I couldn't agree more the more you relax the better experience you'll have in a water. thanks for your comment Chandler it really made my day
Nice to see a 'normal' person adopting the TI technique and the problems we may discover and which need to be given special attention. Thanks for posting.
Hey Kris, you are quite right about how TI has evolved with the rotation thing. I learnt the basics last year and kept watching lots of that Shinji video, which was made around the over-rotation period. So I picked that habit up. Now I am trying to modify it. I am learning that it is best to study videos of TI swimmers with physiques similar to mine. You are the closest I have found. To prove it I made some adjustment s to my hand-entry point, by bringing it closer to my head. I come here and see that's exactly what you are doing. Now I need to widen my tracks. Cheers!
Hi Lloyd, breaking habits is hard so I'm delighted to hear you're doing good with your TI, keep it going and I'm sure you'll be delighted with end results! best of luck
If you had asked me any time in the last 60 or so years if I could swim I would say yes. I grew up near water and had a mother who liked to swim. But it was not lap swimming. It was shore to a float, or after falling off back to a boat. My school growing up did not have a swim team (way too cold.) I did SCUBA dive some and snorkeled for many years. I decided a few months ago to take full advantage of my gym membership and started “swimming” in the pool. I quickly realized I really couldn’t swim swim. When deciding how to get better I was attracted to graceful freestyle. That lead me to Total Immersion. That is where I have landed. I am a TI-er…or is it TIER? (I swam my first 3150 feet this week and 1500 today. Getting close to a mile.) Anyway, what I want to emphasize is even though I am new at this it is easy to see how other swimmers doing laps are swimming in styles that increase drag and was energy. Flat chested, lots of splashing, arms like oars… thanks for the video. It gives me a concept of style to work on.
Try everything and make a choice that suits you best, that's my only advice in this situation. If TI works best for you then just explain them that you feel better when you do it this way, I work with large groups sometimes when I coach adults and not all of them are big fans of new. I always ask them to try and see how it works for them ;) it usually works :D
This is simply beautiful freestyle - well done! As a new triathlete I've just begun to learn TI and I'm really enjoying it. Would highly recommend this swim technique for anyone.
@acinprov Good point, I'd sorted my low head position but I'm still reinforcing it. Haven't noticed my elbows dropping until you pointed this out thx, I'm currently working on catch so it isn't that bad now but still need some work anyway. Over gliding is gone after sr increase practice. Bilateral breathing... well I just hate to breath to my left side I can force myself to do it over short distance but over 400m I just forget about it and go back to my strong side. Have to work on it. Thanks
Hi Kris i am from India Tamilnadu, 52 just beginner learning free style swimming,ur swim is mesmerizing lesson ,I watch Ur swimming video more than 100 times head position, strokes, torso, kick ,the centre torso body line like X , swims horizontal glide lam learning from you Kris thank you 🙏💦🏊👍
beautiful video. I just started TI freestyle from the video, very useful, and the book, not so. I've cut my 25 meter strokes down from 22 to 14 and am swimming faster with much less energy. I'm still finding the breathing a challenge though and need to stop and catch my breath after 200 m.
He probably doesn't get or lik TI. Kris, your swimming is great and getting even better. Comments like this come with the territory. Even Shinji gets them! He has a right to his opinion. I like the rythm you capture in your swimming.
thanks Lloyd, yeah sure he has right to have an opinion, and I have the right to remove any comment below my video, I don't do it beacose I'm really a big fan of feedback and I strongly believe in freedom of speech, but I also don't like online trolls. I believe they're just a waste of space and tiny bit of bandwidth as well. So if anyone would like to tell me how much my swimming sucks they are more than welcome to do but I'd appreciate if they'd told me why otherwise why bother?
Thanks, you are right about this one, it's caused by breathing to the same side, I've been working on it for a while and I feel it's fixed now but haven't seen myself swimming for a while now so I might be wrong ;)
Hi Kris, wrote you last year..finally learned the method...love it problem is ..what do I do when I am supposed to be training to compete in speed events....I try to keep my form...i can now do some distance in training.(with a .snorkel) ..but still use the same arm and leg on the 2BK..cant seem to do the opposite arm..is that ok.?..I am very smooth..have only been doing TI for 2 months in a 25 m. pool.
@VeufClicquot Thanks for your observations, yeah single side breathing messes up my streamlining and general ability to swim straight so it is a big one for me
It is a full stroke technique, aiming low helps with balance, but yes I'd rather keep it higher so i spend some time working on it and it is higher now at least I hope it is ;) on the other hand I have to say I couldn't feel the increased drag if you set up a catch quickly with a descent sr you are simply holding on the water and move your forearm and later whole arm with it so it does not increase drag then, the reason I decided to go higher was to get some extra space for the catch.
thanks for some constructive feedback this is one of the main reasons why i post my videos on-line, I know what you mean and it is a valid point that you are making, but for me lowering my arm allowed me to stay more horizontal all together reducing overall so maybe this is a reason why I didn't felt it as an increase but reduction in drag

I just saw your video, I'm a older swim instructor trying to learn TI swim technique. I been at for a few years but don't seem to be getting any where. BTW nice video.
thank you, to be honest there was a ton of corrections that had to be applied to my fs after I made this clip, it was created from materials that I've made before my TI course for instructors. If you want I might be able to give you some feedback and recommend some drills, but I would need to see your fs (ideally from underwater angles) to identify what could be fixed. Feel free to pm me with a link to your video. BTW. might be worth mentioning: TI was a great generic for most people I've been working with, but there is no technique to fit all body shapes and types. TI forms great fundaments for long distance swimming, mainly by mastering balance, but I recommend trying wide range of techniques to mix and match the end product ;)
@poolrattie Thanks. Trick is to enjoy those little improvements, if you will get a bit better every week - thats the progress that will bring you one step closer to master swimming. Just stay focused and keep it simple. If you have any questions visit totalimmersion board or my website where you will find my email. Good luck
How are you going with your swimming lessons ? Do they teach the TI method that Kris is using ? My coach teaches TI but funnily enough when he can't make class, the other teachers try to change our technique to more conventional methods. I prefer TI though. Keep on swimming !
kris, i can't seem to do the opposite leg to opp. arm for the 2 bk...it seems more natural to do it on the same side.I am still trying to do this whilst racing...and, I have to see this method has really helped me on back stroke and breast stroke. Sometimes I do a 2BK on back stroke too!
Did you manage to master the opposite leg to arm? I tried this yesterday and kept doing it on the same side. If I did it opposite sides, I couldn't turn to breathe. Interested to hear if you have managed to do it?
@vdsadr Its my massive head that weights so much that makes it sink ;) just in case if anyone else manage to develop this sort of a habit, concentrate on lengthening up and moving your head forward, did the trick for me, although I still catch myself on it from time to time, it never really bothered me too much except the fact that people were constantly poining it out and it actually is a bit better to keep it a bit higher in the water then you can see on this video ;)
sometimes it was, mainly in shallow water shots as I had to keep my legs really high so I leaned forward a bit too much ;) tak mowie po polsku smialo pisz po polsku jesli chcesz ;)
Looks good to me; I'm a self-taught, TI practitioner. Always tweaking and modifying. Have to work on leg kick. Thanks for this video; it helps me form some mental imagery of what I must implement.
thank you, bear in mind there are some mistakes in my form there. mainly head being too low. best of luck with your TI practice, I'm glad I could help a little ;)
I have experienced some success with plunging entire body beneath surface of water at the outset. Seems to lead into a more effortless series of strokes thereafter. I like what you are showing
+Stephanie Davis it gets a bit messy during breathing when head stays as low as in this video. if you'll keep it few inches higher you'll still benefit from improved balance but your breathing will be more efficient
Yes, I concur with you. I'm in the process of correcting and refining. Specifically, I've got to learn to exhale thru nose and inhale thru mouth. Currently, I'm a mouth-breather both ways. Also, must keep crown of head in water and roll when breathing on my right side. I learn a lot by watching videos.
Technically you don't necessarily have to breath out through your nose, it just works better this way as it helps with keeping the water out of your nose, some would argue that you'll hyperventilate more if you'll breath out through the nose but it never really bothered me
May I know if this is a drill that you are trying to do? Because what you are currently doing is basically holding ur arms in a drag creating position, u are putting a lot of efforts into holding ur arms in a non horizontal angle. Any thing that stick out of ur body is going to create drag. 1:38 you can probably tell that it is creating drag. a lot of swimmers slice their hands into the water real deep so that they could employ catch immediately, this is not suit for distance swim.
Nice swim. But one thing I would like to point out that from your catch it seems that you are pulling and pushing the water. You should allow your leading arm to come to a vertical position automatically as it is relaxed during recovery, It naturally comes under the elbow if your leading hand is relaxed and from that point (when your hand is under the elbow), you should pull the elbow to take the hand to your side.
His left arm goes out to his left when extending, see 3.27. Not that it will make a huge difference in time, he's got a nice stroke, just wish it was as easy as he makes it look.
@zdrastkakcii Thanks but I'm afraid that's not the only time when I can see myself dropping with the elbow now it is not as big as in the shallow pool but it is still present, all I can say in my defense is that this video is over 2 years old and I was just starting to be happy enough with my balance and streamline never mind the catch ;)
@smoochswimmer if you know my name I'm guessing you know me in real life so just ask me when you'll see me next time. If you can't email me at kris@swimming.ie and I will try to help you as much as I can this way. Tough question with 400m time as I don't do timed 400m swims last time I was checking I had just below 22min in ow on 1500, goal is to go sub 20 so I have to focus on speed a bit more now. It's hard to say what speed these shots were taken at as I was doing them for self video analyse
In a 2 bk your kick is helping you to roll rather then adding to a propulsion try this video (AeBYur3k6_0) it should help with understanding how it all works together
@hmkls : There's nothing natural about human being moving through the water, we're not aquatic creatures after all. It doesn't feel awkward so I'm happy enough since I don't really care about the way it looks but how well it works in long distance swims. I have absolutely nothing against crytcisim but I'd appreciate if you could be more constructive, if you can't than please keep your opinion to yourself. Why won't you simply show me how it's done and upload your own swimming video, than post a link her…
+Kris Szczurowski There are plenty of videos on youtube showing you how it's done. If you don't want to make an effort to search for them, that means you don't want to improve. You say there's nothing natural about human swimming in water yet you call this "fishlike"? Newflash, it's more "piglike" than anything else. If you are anywhere near as good as you THINK you are, you wouldn't be swimming as slow as the 80 year-olds who are dog paddling in my local pool.
+Hmkls oh I've seen loads of videos of how it's done, and I never said that I'm perfect either, quite the oposite so I'm not sure what's your problem with my video but I have to suggest that you seek professional help, trolling can be cured men there is still hope for you, it won't be easy but I'm sure you can do it!
+Kris Szczurowski I'm telling you the truth. It's an ugly truth, but it isn't trolling. Search for Michael Phelps easy 2 beat kick swim video. Now THAT is fishlike, and THAT looks natural. On a progress of 0 to 100, 0 being not able to swim and 100 being Phelps, you are a 40, there is a loooong way to go mate. Calling your swimming fishlike is arrogant and ignorant. No one likes this type of person, so don't expect to get polite comments.
+Hmkls you're right on that scale that's where I'd probably sit but I still don't get your point, what exactly is it that you're trying to say? that my swimming is poor? luckily for me my clients would disagree with you. I never claimed to be an Olympic swimmer, fishlike does not refer to my superior skills but to a paticular method of practicing long distance fs technique. If you want to continue this argument please do me a favour and upload your own swimming video, so we can have some base for discussion. P.s.: what you're doing is text book trolling dude, you make no valuable contribution to discussion wasting my time and bandwidth, that's a definition of spamming if you add your criticism not backed by any argumentation you get trolling, not cool men
I'm surprised that it didn't bother you because for me that'd make it harder to catch a breath plus more time consumed to lift the head up. Beside that, great video!
What 'original' video you are referring to? If you are talking about Shinji's video this could be simply because he is far better swimmer then I am. I have nothing against criticism as long as it is constructive, so if you have an opinion please share but make sure it make sense
@papadogo1 keep it short and focus on breathing there is no point to start building up distance until you are happy about your technique, go back to breathing exercises, if you have a chance video yourself to find the reason for this problem, otherwise ask someone to have a look at you and tell you if you are lifting your head up or pulling with leading arm while breathing, blowing out is vital as well, hard to say to many variables ;)
Good stuff! Your head is too low, align it with your spine...cus you head is too low you tend to over-rotate on your right side...just be relaxed no need tp push your head down...
Hey, I think that your head is to low, try to pull it a bit higher. Ej, ty jesteś z Polski, bo nie wiem czy mogę po polsku pisać, bo byłbym w stanie pewnie lepiej to opisać co wg mnie jest nie do końca poprawnie? :D
really bad swimming... why? please elaborate more, also if you can be so kind and upload your own 'form' I would be more then happy to learn, how to do it right from you
Excellent. Your switchover is just a little jerky though. It should be a little more smoother. Also you should be mentally calm and relaxed a little more. When the technique gets embedded in the mind, you stop paying attention to it and overtime it comes naturally with no efforts. Don't be pissed off man with these kinds of comments. Just pay attention honestly. You are doing great anyway.
Well as a ti certified instructor I'll have to disagree with you here (but I'm not up to date anymore so maybe you'r right). However I'll agree that amount of my body rotation in this video is way too much, it was made at the start of my adventure with ti back in the days when this is sort of how it looked, if you'll watch earlier ti dvds you'll notice a sagnificant shift from around 75 deg down to somewhere around 35. Also my head in this video is way to low, again as I said I was just starting with ti when this video was made. If you believe there are any other exaggerations please feel free to point them out to me, I'm always happy to see constructive criticism
Kris Szczurowski Hi Kris, looks like your left hand/arm goes much further out to one side than your right. And your hand 'skews' left a bit too. Do you find this problematic? Cheers, Matt 53yo Aussie, ex competition swimmer - avoided pools for 25 years because I was overweight and vain :-( now self teaching myself Total Immersion and loving it (getting enough air is my problem just now).
Clearly 90's are not much into your knowledge, So I just want to make clear that I feel very sorry that you have to be living the worst generation for music ever...

Thanks man, much appreciated

@riurijjir Thanks I can breath both sides but prefer right as you can see on video
It looks so easy the way he swims. He even doesn't have to kick
Moby is perfect for this TI video.
great video like it, beautiful freestyle, love the excellent music ,song what about it .
so smooth :O
@acinprov
i guess the elbow dropping form was due to shallow water and he was avoiding to hit the bottom
It sure is ;) works well for me to

+Stephanie Davis it gets a bit messy during breathing when head stays as low as in this video. if you'll keep it few inches higher you'll still benefit from improved balance but your breathing will be more efficient
Yes, I concur with you. I'm in the process of correcting and refining. Specifically, I've got to learn to exhale thru nose and inhale thru mouth. Currently, I'm a mouth-breather both ways. Also, must keep crown of head in water and roll when breathing on my right side. I learn a lot by watching videos.
Technically you don't necessarily have to breath out through your nose, it just works better this way as it helps with keeping the water out of your nose, some would argue that you'll hyperventilate more if you'll breath out through the nose but it never really bothered me
Porcelain is so relaxing just like swimming
Why the head is deeper in the water then other swimmer head I see hear?
cos I was a noob back then (no workshops or any time with someone to give me feedback, just the book and a dvd) my head should be higher
I'm a beginner at swimming and it seems so hard for me to take a breathe every once in a while while swimming. Any tips?
Your video is awesome btw :)
His left arm goes out to his left when extending, see 3.27. Not that it will make a huge difference in time, he's got a nice stroke, just wish it was as easy as he makes it look.
what about the arms?
@zdrastkakcii Thanks but I'm afraid that's not the only time when I can see myself dropping with the elbow now it is not as big as in the shallow pool but it is still present, all I can say in my defense is that this video is over 2 years old and I was just starting to be happy enough with my balance and streamline never mind the catch ;)
Nice technique Kris, seems really effortless. What pace/100m you are swimming in this vid, approximately?
Thanks Kasparas, that's almost recovery pace so I'm going to guess around 1:50
Nice!!!
if you do it right it actually empowers it
Can we survive with the TI technique in an Open Water competition?
Sure! It's geared towards long distance swimming. Low temperature in some areas might be a bit of a problem, but you can always up your revs a bit ;)
No veo el codo alto tan particular del estilo total inmersión, mas bien veo como que el brazo se quiebra al revés de como indica la técnica
Sweet
your gliding is very good
It's Porcelain by Moby
@smoochswimmer if you know my name I'm guessing you know me in real life so just ask me when you'll see me next time. If you can't email me at kris@swimming.ie and I will try to help you as much as I can this way. Tough question with 400m time as I don't do timed 400m swims last time I was checking I had just below 22min in ow on 1500, goal is to go sub 20 so I have to focus on speed a bit more now. It's hard to say what speed these shots were taken at as I was doing them for self video analyse
What is the name if this song please someone tell me
Ryan O Shea "Porcelain" by Moby ;)
P.s.: what you're doing is text book trolling dude, you make no valuable contribution to discussion wasting my time and bandwidth, that's a definition of spamming if you add your criticism not backed by any argumentation you get trolling, not cool men
This video kinda introduced me to gliding in swimming and swimming as a whole btw :D
@tuperi very constructive...
the beach song ;dddd
Haha yeah, don't forget to stick it to your swim suit ;) and add to your CV ;)
I'm surprised that it didn't bother you because for me that'd make it harder to catch a breath plus more time consumed to lift the head up. Beside that, great video!
well said, thank you
What 'original' video you are referring to? If you are talking about Shinji's video this could be simply because he is far better swimmer then I am. I have nothing against criticism as long as it is constructive, so if you have an opinion please share but make sure it make sense
@papadogo1 keep it short and focus on breathing there is no point to start building up distance until you are happy about your technique, go back to breathing exercises, if you have a chance video yourself to find the reason for this problem, otherwise ask someone to have a look at you and tell you if you are lifting your head up or pulling with leading arm while breathing, blowing out is vital as well, hard to say to many variables ;)
which is the song used?
+Kenny Tran Thanks a bunch ..been searching for it for four years now Lol.. had heard it before
+Kenny Tran thanx for comment I was looking for the name of song in comment section
Good stuff! Your head is too low, align it with your spine...cus you head is too low you tend to over-rotate on your right side...just be relaxed no need tp push your head down...
I agree.
If you are working on 2bk you might find my 'HipDrive' video helpful
Hey, I think that your head is to low, try to pull it a bit higher. Ej, ty jesteś z Polski, bo nie wiem czy mogę po polsku pisać, bo byłbym w stanie pewnie lepiej to opisać co wg mnie jest nie do końca poprawnie? :D
From underwater he looks like dancing....
really bad swimming... why? please elaborate more, also if you can be so kind and upload your own 'form' I would be more then happy to learn, how to do it right from you
hey, old vdo so you must have evolved a lot now. just wanted to say your spear is a bit too fast, you can slow down the snappy pull arm too
its pretty, but I wonder how fast is he actually swimming. I doubt he's holding 100's below 1:30
Violaguy02 2 beat kick swimming isn't used for racing, it's used for long distance.
Кажется у него голова сильно опущена.
you aren't nice either, must be a perfect video for you then
The way you swim is not as elegant as the Japanese does in the original TI clip
nadas malaso
It sucks.. just look at the arms.. EPIC FAIL
David Wehbb just look at what exactly? He's swimming very efficiently - you know TI is a very different technique don't you??
Looks so awkward and unnatural. Yikes...
I'm afraid, he seems not so good at TI. He seems to be exaggerating too much...sorry.
Cheers, Matt 53yo Aussie, ex competition swimmer - avoided pools for 25 years because I was overweight and vain :-( now self teaching myself Total Immersion and loving it (getting enough air is my problem just now).
dis is not a nice visdeo
wow.... this is like, really bad swimming...do you seriously think your form is good? Oh man..........
Clearly 90's are not much into your knowledge, So I just want to make clear that I feel very sorry that you have to be living the worst generation for music ever...
very bad technique
