What I remember back then was that the original D3s got popular in Southern California (specifically San Diego) after Osiris started liquidating their stock for sale. When they were at regular retail prices, nobody had them. Then they suddenly became ubiquitous in low-income communities, because they gave them away for near-free at skate and surf shops. And then everybody had/wanted them. The customary thing to do was once they were worn and battered, was to cut the tongue off your old pair, so that you could slide them behind the tongue of your next D3s to make them look even puffier.
@@Doctor_Yuri yeah we treated skate shoes like slides when not actually skating. and sometimes when skating, it didn't work out so well for some moves lmao
Rad! Man, I just bought a pair of rental bowling shoes for like 35 bucks. Leather sole, goodyear welted. Would love a deep dive into these strange shoes.
Dope shoes, I had like 5 pairs over the course of the years. Super comfy, like couches on your feet. Never had any issue skating in them, but I also never liked the more simple "vans" style, which gave great board feel, but also sent Shockwave through my feet anytime hitting a drop or stairset over 4 or 5 steps.
Interesting perspective. I never got too good at skating. I felt like it was just do to me being so big and scared. But i grew up around it. Whats your favorite trick!
Classic Vans suck for street skating. And their wet traction is down right dangerous. Nobody in the 90s skated in Vans. I can't recall seeing one person in the DC area, especially any pros (e.g. Freedom Plaza) skating in Vans. Vans were not very popular in the 80s/90s and didn't seem to start getting popular again until 2000s. With Vans Skateparks popping up, and all the contests they put on, they certainly gained back a little market share, especially after they were purchased by another large company in 2004. My favorite most comfy skate shoes ever were made by NICE (~1996?) that were like a Taupe colored suede. They kind of looked basic, almost cheap on the outside, but they held up for 2-3x longer than any other shoe I ever had skating. From Vision Street Wear suedes (nearly identical construction to Vans Full Cabs), bulky Airwalk hightops, to Etnies, eS, Emerica, DC, and others. I didn't really like when they started all looking like super bulky Basketball shoes. I know Dyrdek had some influence on that as he had dozens of shoe designs he created with DC.
@@hazepheno925 DC were the "poser" shoe in my town growing up. With their atrocious build quality no one who actually skated wore them. People either had the cheapest models they put out cause they were broke (no shade, I was broke too) or their $130 "fashion" oriented shoes that were trying to compete with the Circa, Osiris and Supra flashy hightops. No idea if DC finally upped their build quality but I'll certainly never skate them. Not even my love of Dyrdek growing up could keep me buying them after I shredded two pairs in two weeks.

Love this. I did own a pair of these in White/navy. They were quite comfortable, a lot more like a running shoe with a skate style. If you want to continue with skate shoes, Etnies Lo-Cut II or Callicut would be cool. As they were incredibly popular early to mid 2000s and still made to this day.
I would love to see adidas samba cut in half. A comparison between the adidas originals and the generic on would be awesome as well. Great video, keep up
This would be amazing. Thank you! I have a pair of Samba ADV (skateboarding version) and I heard are more comfortable than the OG one. Such a timeless shoe
It seems silly now, but as a skater, the D3's were seen as the poser shoes that non-skaters wore for fashion. Never owned a pair for that reason. In retrospect, all of the shoes I wore were basically the same thing with a slightly different design and logo. I'm looking at you Globe Chet 4's and Es' Schemes.
I mean, in reality they were more casual or fashion shoes, over what a person should want in a responsive skate shoe. In that sense, you have nothing to feel off about. Plenty of non skaters did wear them and other puffy skate shoes. However, I've always laughed at how ridiculous skateboarding is as a culture. So elitist for something that is supposed to be a counter culture. Don't hold the board this way, Don't wear this band's T-shirt, he's pushing mongo, ect. My absolute favorite is how nitpicky people will get on a game of SKATE "But I said only flat ground fakie flip tricks"! That argument really never happens in other sports. Still a fun sport, but just can't get over some of the culture stuff.
The 2001 model (this one) looks so incredibly different from the OG ('99) that has tons of mesh on it and a ring for the laces in the centre of the tongue. Had both versions at one point, still think the OG is a nicer shoe, and puffier overall (which let's be honest was the reason we all wanted them lol). 2001 revision is real nice feeling on the feet though and is much more comfortable than the original release imo.
“Controversy!” sounded more like a tempest in a teacup. I came for the shoe cut. Still chuckle at cut-centred score, especially when it’s followed by the bandsaw going “I’m coming through HERE now!!!” 🤣
I fell in love with the D3 1st time I saw them, I tried to get them in every colorway, I got most. Sk8'n them kinda sucked though. Couldn't feel the board and I found out the hard way, you can't fly a plane in them either. I was learning to fly in a Cessna 172 and the shoes were way too wide for the pedals, I had to take them off and fly in my socks that day. I wore my D3's more casually. I sk8 best in Etnies Callicut and Adidas Superstar.
I had the grey and yellow 2001’s in 2001 and they were insanely comfortable. I used to hit my ankle a lot skating if I missed a flip trick and these remedied that. For me that was worth the money (that my parents paid) just to not limp around campus. Also, I made the choice to wear these for the year vs getting 5 pairs of Vans. Still worth it in my mind and it’s cool to see how the center cut looks. Thanks for this! Checking online they’re around $100 these days. Might have to buy a pair and download some Limp Bizkit to relive what I consider to be the golden era of street skating.
I just bought a pair of these today since I got wide leg jeans again. I’m 39. I liked skate shoes in my youth but never had these. I love that style circle back around and I get to relive my youth with things I never had 😂
I miss my D3's, they were the white and acid green. And you are right about the convincing of parents, not an easy task especially when they were so expensive (for the time), my 12yr old self had to spend an entire summer washing cars and mowing the good old neighborhood lawns to save up the $$$ to own a pair. Still my favorite skate shoes to this day!
I had these in just Grey back in the day, moved onto wearing Osiris Bronx which were also super puffy. Both super sweaty tbh but I think Bronx have D3's beat for the amount of foam in them... at least the early Bronx(of which there are many), the last few models became super slim with no foam at all.

Loved these shoes, I had em in like 3 diff colors. A few weeks ago I found the old osiris promo book from when these came out. It was really cool looking through all the shoes and clothing from the time, half of it I'd still rock today.
I remember wanting these so bad. I had a friend who was an amazing skate boarder and got sponsored by Osiris. I remember he got every color way and he would sell them to kids as an extra source of income. Pretty smart for a middle school student haha
I remember I went to a skate tour in ‘96 or so and all the pro skaters were selling their extra shoes. I wanted a pair of Sal 23’s or Eric Koston’s and they were close to 100 at the skate shop and these dudes were selling them for $20-30. But all the pro skaters were little dudes and nobody had my size.
Could never afford shoes like these as a kid but one day I was blading at local park and a kid asked for a trade for while on his deck and I can still remember that experience like it was yesterday 🥰 felt like I just slipped my feet into some clouds with all that foam and I didn't want to take them off at the end of the session. Was legit the only time putting on someone else's shoe and it didn't feel foriegn AF but now looking at that mid I can see why 👌
My man is SOOO thorough wit his information, I've NEVER seen another channel likes ur bro, aint NO ONE doin the same things ur doin! (Atleast to my knowledge). Keep up the GREAT work fr. 👊
What made these so popular was the fact they were made of tough rubber compared to your standard vans and Etnies that would wear out after weeks of skating. These shoes where the holy grail on the inside skating circle when they dropped. Nobody had to replace they’re old vans after they came out with these. Forever a change in the skate scene for the shoes we wore. I got a pair of these from my older cousin as some hand me downs. Wish I still had them.
You've been killing it bro can't wait to see you at a million btw I never heard of Nick's or thorogoods and others before I found this channel or even how to take care of boot also I found the channel Trenton and Heath through you thanks so much Weston.
I collect the D3 2001 and now the Original (since their return in 2022) and this was such a neat video. I've always wondered what was inside but never had the heart to cut them in half, haha. Anyway, awesome video, maybe you can do another skate icon by Globe called the CT-IV? They were huge during the same time as the D3 in the early 2000's and in my school the cool kids either had the D3 or the CT-IV. Forgot to mention, the CT-IV has a built in tongue that is fused with the rest of the shoe! It's so unique and I'd love to see what it looks like.
The CT-IV was THE shoe that everyone who didn't skate but wanted to look like they skate wore when I was growing up. Admittedly comfy but god damn were they ugly 😂
These were THE shoe to have when I was in 6th grade. It’s crazy seeing the amount of foam in the tongue. It’s like a Tempur-Pedic mattress on your foot 😆
In 2001 the Osiris shoes were great for stairs and drops for me. They absorbed a lot of impact compared to the vans, emerica and globe shoes I wore for more tech tricks. The Josh Kaspers were one of my favorites. I remember a lot of “Posers” wore them, that never even stepped foot on a skateboard. I still find it weird at an older age when I talk to someone that wears skate or surf brands but don’t do either. The pro skater Dave Mayhew, who designed that shoe killed it in the Osiris video with those shoes. His interview in the Nine Club is worth watching or listening.
I remember wanting these so bad until I went to buy them tried them on and they were so uncomfortable for my wider feed. So I bought the ct-4 globe shoes with the attached tongue and by far were the most comfortable shoes I ever wore, I still buy globes to this day over 20 years later and they still make a couple models almost the same with the attached tongue.
Bought a pair about a year and a half ago(Blk/blk of course, regret not getting the blk/glow ones...). Love them, so comfortable! Was never a skater back, I typically wore combat boot, 20 holes, etc. Back in that day, borrowed my friends D3's one day to go to 7/11, fell in love with them "I need one pair of these!". Only took about 20 years... Better late than never!
pLease cut apart a pair of DC Kalis Vulcs. I have the low-top ones and in under a year (I barely skate anymore and then no ollies really) the outsoles are holding up well enough, but the glue holding the right one to the upper melted in i suspect... moisture ... anyhow, they were on sale for under 40 and the right tongue had a problem, it would drift to the right and wind up way skewed out. . I laced thru the tongue eyelet to where it held it in the middle, and there's a new trick, for a pair of seconds that were just plain cobbled together crooked. There's another facet to shoes indeed.. are they "TRUE" or not?
If you could review more skate shoes it would be tight, the durability of skate shoes is super important and I would love to see detailed videos not just skating them but showing everything that goes into the shoe
I just got two new pairs, all black and the tan/copper pair, they are just as big and ridiculous as i remember them, and dumb comfy. Ive been rocking NYC 83's for 20 years now, i fell off the D3 train about 10 years ago but now that they are making a come back and Osiris seems to be releasing them in a steady stream I was sure to grab a few pairs. You can all thank me for keeping Osiris in business because for the last 20 years because every time my friends would comment on my NYC 83's they'd say "You have got to be the only guy keeping Osiris in business man, you gotta give it up already"
Check out the Dada Spreewells!! They came out early 2000’s! They had a air unit in them and when you would step down it would rotate a spinning rim on the side of the shoe!! I loved them!! Very unique!
I loved this. I wonder what the original D3 2001 looked like on the inside/how similar they are to this re-release. I was lucky enough to buy two pairs of these shoes back in the day, the black and red and the black and blue. My nonna HATED them. They were super stiff and gave me blisters but I wore them to death both to skateboard and just as a leisure shoe anyway. I remember them being super hot, and with all that padding, yeah, makes sense.
I had the original release of these shoes. There was a limited edition later on with the S.N.G. Pants and I had those too. My mom kept me fresh as a kid. Thanks ma!
"Dad, PLEASE let me get a pair of D3s !!!🥺" Dad: "No way man, you're just gonna cut them in half.." Just playing man, cool video. Being almost 32 and looking back brings a smile to my face. I remember i had a pair of Osiris that had a "stash pocket" in the tongue. The old style DC, Adio, the excitement of getting an Eastbay catalog in the mail. The good ol days..It almost brings a tear to my eye..
I was in highschool when these came out and I wanted some too but I never got a pair. I do remember rockin the Koston 1 and 2s and the Mike V's in the late 90s.
2:33 I had the gray and yellow, from horton plaza suncoast in san diego... they popped within a month and got a whole new pair... that alos popped a month later... they didnt give me a new pair... wasnt even skating... just walking around and i lived 2 blocks from work.
Okay I’ve been thinking about this for a week, Please do the etnies marana. The backstory is, they have a three times more durable formula that they just released however, in doing that, they got rid of their old formula and I am under the belief that nothing actually changed. They always offered the 3X durable in a Ryan Sheckler pro model, so a year ago, I bought that as well as their classic marinas and they seem to hold up equivalently After I made that realization they stopped selling their classics and said all of their shoes are now three times more durable Please get to the bottom of this🤩 Thanks🤙
These things have a special place in my heart and Ben though I think they are ridiculous, a kid at the park I used to skate who was always sort of picked on even though deep down everyone loved the guy, talked his unemployed single mom that used to pick up cans into buying him a pair and he was a small kid so everyone made endless jokes about his shoes that he was so proud of
I had a couple pairs of these back in the day.. I remember the stupid air pockets in the sole would pop after a session or two of skating and they would make a whistling noise with every step.
I loved this pair of shoes, I've had five pairs. I recently ordered an unopened original pack - it's now in my collection. Thank you for this great video and great channel.
Skate shoes stopped being made from real leather and such in the mid to late 90s. I get why but man I miss those days when a shoe was really beefy. Loved the first koston es and muskas. Great shoes.
I believe I had a pair of D3s in 2001, but it might have been another Osiris skate shoe. At the time, people thought there was some major performance benefit to wearing big chunky skate shoes. In retrospect, that seems a bit silly but the padding in the tongue and collar was helpful in reducing impact if a flip trick goes wrong. For a second, I thought this was going to be about the Muska shoe that had the stash pocket. Now that I've looked it up, that shoe was made by és tho.
I been rocking Osiris shoes since 7th grade. And 15+ years later I still love them over all other shoes. Not these ones but almost all others look amazing!
Would be cool to see Reebok pumps cut in half, those were the coolest kicks when I was a kid. Pretty sure the air unit is just in the tongue area but they also had a special cushion in the soles as well. 😎
@@mphilleo I remember them being out of my size but I was determined to be cool so I got a size up, tripped in the parking lot on my way to the car and still have a scar on my knee from it... I'm 38 now 🤣

Can you do DC next? That's the brand I've been sticking with and the bottoms always wear out before the top, they're Leather but I've never cut one quite like you do.
I had the original version of this shoe in high school (not the 2001s) in navy with yellow accents. loved the look but they ran pretty small so they were really uncomfortable, i couldnt return them because i ordered them from a catalog and i was like 15 and didnt know any better so i just wore them for a while anyway. also yeah, sole was so thick and hard that there was like no boardfeel at all, like skating in air maxes or whatever. i think i went back to wearing DC or Vans after these.
I had the Marc Johnson Emericas shoes instead. I wasn't into the whole puffy shoe thing because it seemed like it would be harder to feel my board. I did have a pair of Duffs that were kinda puffy with thick soles and I remember not liking them.
Mine are now 9 months old of skating, and I usually skate 1-4 hrs 3-5 days a week , and I'm barely making it through the front air chambers on my front foot, my back foot shoe is still looking good, the sides are still good and my toe side is barely getting worn because I've been practicing kickflip a lot
So interesting to see the Durameter here too....Im wondering what Rep dunks have in there...they cant be harder than 50 right? I wonder what SB Dunks have in the Heel Midsole
lol man i'm old .. i had the grey and yellow pair in high school... they weren't exactly the best for actually skateboarding but they were so flippin comfortable just to wear. i loved them

Wish I still had them.
exactly. was looking for this comment
Hey, how's your BMW?
@@pagegirl9147 it’s great lol
My sister had a bright pink pair of these! Big nostalgias. Good idea Weston!
Oh man how I LOVED the Osiris D3s. Seeing the thumbnail brought me back!
The classic Airwalk skate shoe were it back in my day. Would love to see those things torn apart!
pLease cut apart a pair of DC Kalis Vulcs. There's another facet to shoes indeed.. are they "TRUE" or not?
big toe side of the shoe.. sole let go. trsh-o-la Deerdek.
Awesome video! Can you cut some Globe skateboard shoes in half? Preferably the Sabre or Tilt styles
Great video! Do the DC Versatile next please
Love the videos weston! Keep pumpin' em out!
Love the video’s! But what about some videos of boot brands in Europe for your fans overseas? Love from Amsterdam!
Check out the Dada Spreewells!! They came out early 2000’s! They had a air unit in them and when you would step down it would rotate a spinning rim on the side of the shoe!! I loved them!! Very unique!
I’d love to see the inside of a pair of Etnies Vallely’s. Best BMX shoe ever made.
I remember them being super hot, and with all that padding, yeah, makes sense.
i was hoping for this video but never tought it would happen. great job.
I had the original release of these shoes. There was a limited edition later on with the S.N.G. Pants and I had those too. My mom kept me fresh as a kid. Thanks ma!
"Dad, PLEASE let me get a pair of D3s !!!🥺"
Dad: "No way man, you're just gonna cut them in half.."
Just playing man, cool video.
Great video as always
Okay I’ve been thinking about this for a week,
Please do the etnies marana.
The backstory is, they have a three times more durable formula that they just released however, in doing that, they got rid of their old formula and I am under the belief that nothing actually changed.
They always offered the 3X durable in a Ryan Sheckler pro model, so a year ago, I bought that as well as their classic marinas and they seem to hold up equivalently
After I made that realization they stopped selling their classics and said all of their shoes are now three times more durable
Please get to the bottom of this🤩
Thanks🤙
Never thought I’d see this shoe on your program but I’m 100% here for it.
I had the yellow and grey D3 2001 and they were great skate shoes. Good memories.
This was excellent!
Definitely would love to see you cut up a pair of Adidas Forum 84 hi.
That or any 80s converse basketball shoes.
You should do either the accel og or the es scheme, i think that would be epic and cool pls and thank you.
Cool video I would like to see you cut the Ariat Rebar Flex Patriot work boot that would be neat
These things have a special place in my heart and Ben though I think they are ridiculous, a kid at the park I used to skate who was always sort of picked on even though deep down everyone loved the guy, talked his unemployed single mom that used to pick up cans into buying him a pair and he was a small kid so everyone made endless jokes about his shoes that he was so proud of
Along the same lines, would you take apart ES accel. I am curious what you think of the quality of the shoe.
I had a couple pairs of these back in the day.. I remember the stupid air pockets in the sole would pop after a session or two of skating and they would make a whistling noise with every step.
never had them but im planning to buy some tomorrow witch is why i came to see ur video, thanks so much!
I loved this pair of shoes, I've had five pairs. I recently ordered an unopened original pack - it's now in my collection. Thank you for this great video and great channel.
I have the brown Osiris Convoy Mid and I love them. I wish I could find another pair.
Skate shoes stopped being made from real leather and such in the mid to late 90s. I get why but man I miss those days when a shoe was really beefy. Loved the first koston es and muskas. Great shoes.
Old etnies as well
I believe I had a pair of D3s in 2001, but it might have been another Osiris skate shoe.
From Singapore. Had this in early 2000s. The red white and black version. One of the most comfortable skate shoes.
@Rose Anvil You should take a look at the Milwaukee Boot Company’s Products. I would love to hear your thoughts on the Pfister Pain toe.
Would be cool to see Reebok pumps cut in half, those were the coolest kicks when I was a kid. Pretty sure the air unit is just in the tongue area but they also had a special cushion in the soles as well. 😎
My family wasn't rich enough to afford Reebok pumps for me when I was a kid, so I was stuck with the Spalding knock-offs. 😅
@@mphilleo I remember them being out of my size but I was determined to be cool so I got a size up, tripped in the parking lot on my way to the car and still have a scar on my knee from it... I'm 38 now 🤣
Bro how you gonna destroy these treasures. Great channel.
Fred Durst: fashion icon.
How about some Reebok pumps? Great video as usual.
Was that you on the mini ramp? That was a sweet little session you filmed for the interstitial footage. Just need a VX2000 for the true effect.
I remember I used to give my skate shoes the Osiris look by putting rolled socks under the shoe tongues.
These and the Reebok Answer 5s were the most popular shoes in my 2001-2002 5th grade elementary school, loved them both still to 5his day. It's funny because it was Reebok & Osiiris and Jordan's ofc.
Great pick ! Please do Original SWAT boots classic 9 !
You’d be surprised I still have a pair of D3 and they were my favorite skate shoe of all time.
I loved the d3 and the d3 2001. I bought a pair of d3 2001 a year or two ago, I wore the. For a bit and sold them. It was a nice memory.
Wow!! I had a par of Osiris Peter Smolik and were very cool... You should get somewhere a pair of Circa's Chad Muska... They were as extreme as the D3...
Please do a shoe review on Sperry and docksides shoes sir.
RoseAnvil! I never gave a crap about what my shoes were made of until 2 days and 20 of your uploads later. Now I'm staring at all of my shoes like I'm some detective and I love it!
I was wondering if you would do army standard issue boots. I would love to know what the source of blisters in basic training came from!
Please could you do a video on the Adidas Forum '84's blue thread? I'm curious to see your opinion on the quality of the meterials used on my favourite shoes. Huge respect from here in the UK, I love your videos!
I had a grey pair when they came out. Loved those things, skated pretty nice too. Wish I knew what ever happened to them.
I had that pair of black D3's with a yellow trim - They were actually great skate shoes!
Can you do DC next? That's the brand I've been sticking with and the bottoms always wear out before the top, they're Leather but I've never cut one quite like you do.
Gotta do the Globe Sabre now! 😂
I didn’t have this model but had an older pair with that same yellow/gray color scheme
Will you cut open mountaineering boots?
Curious to see the inside and what you think about the construction
I didn't skate myself but I grew up with so many skaters in Southern California, and these huge ass puffy shoes are such a nostalgia trip
I had the Marc Johnson Emericas shoes instead. I wasn't into the whole puffy shoe thing because it seemed like it would be harder to feel my board. I did have a pair of Duffs that were kinda puffy with thick soles and I remember not liking them.
You should do the Adidas Handball Spezial & the Gazelle Indoor's!
Wait what! 😲 Came back in style in 2018? I haven’t stopped wearing puffy skate shoes!!!
Can you please do a video on Globe’s CT-iv or Fusion?
So interesting to see the Durameter here too....Im wondering what Rep dunks have in there...they cant be harder than 50 right? I wonder what SB Dunks have in the Heel Midsole
lol man i'm old .. i had the grey and yellow pair in high school... they weren't exactly the best for actually skateboarding but they were so flippin comfortable just to wear. i loved them
I had a black grey and red pair that I skated in lasted forever and never hurt doing down stairs or when I got hit on the top of the foot. The double lace up what the thing to do if not skating in them
You should try globe ct-IV skate shoes. They look in the similar vein, but I think that you'd like the materials used in that pair more
Great video I owned a pair of these early 2001 my first skate shoe I called them the boats 🚢 what's the instrumental track IDS cheers dude
