In 1968, the world was living on the edge of nuclear war between the US and Russia. "Mutually Assured Destruction" was supposed to be the deterrent to either country using nuclear bombs first because both countries would not survive it. In this movie, that war did happen and nuclear radiation mutated apes to become intelligent and man to become primitive. In 1968, the US was in the middle of the Vietnam War which was not going well and the anti-war movement was going strong with demonstrations all over the country and the Civil Rights movement was also still ongoing at that time. The country was on the brink. This movie seemed to be a tale of what might happen if we went over the brink and destroyed ourselves through nuclear annihilation in a global apocalypse.

Not to mention that the Cuban Missile Crisis had taken place not all that long before this time (1962), and the memory of that was still pretty fresh in everyone's minds - if the Soviet Union hadn't ultimately agreed to stop sending nuclear weapons to Cuba and remove the ones they'd already sent there, things would have gone very badly. It wasn't publicly known just how close to the brink of an actual nuclear war we had come until many years later....

For the, Japanese, World War II, is a nuclear war. For now, they remain the only country, in which "Atomic Bombs", were used in anger. Ironically enough, we used them on ourselves, as a part of nuclear testing. In Las Vegas, they had bleachers for tourists to "safely" view the tests from, as if at a fireworks show. The bleachers still exist.
In the, Pacific Ocean, we evacuated the natives of many island nations, to other places, before testing bombs on those islands. The Frenchman that invented, not a mere two-piece swimsuit, but the, "Bikini", was named for one such test site, Bikini Atoll. It was so sexy, that he had to hire a prostitute to model it for him, because regular models were too modest, and refused to model it for him! (See her in the, "Wikipedia", article.) His design is one triangle per breast, one for the vulva, and one for the anal cleft.
His goal was to, 🤯, onlookers. He achieved that goal! Hence the name source. When not seen on a girl's torso, the triangles resemble the, ☢️, by the way! 👙
I used to view live war news coverage, while sitting next to my father, and it didn't scare me then, because as a toddler, I couldn't distinguish between commercials and programs yet, let alone fiction and non-fiction. For example, to me, "Doctor Who", and, "Ye' Olde Curiosity Shoppe", were the same show. Eventually, going to school helped, because of library access. But anyway, I look forward to viewing this DVR of yours! 😎👍

MAD is reality - now with Russia and China - not history. But it works as well as any alternative and why the last World War was 80 yr ago.

Yeah! I agree. The other sequels could have been better films too.? It's just that because Hollywood didn't reap a lot of profits for example Dr. Dolittle was one. They decided to cut the budgets on all films in the late sixties and seventies? That's what caused the problems with Richard Donner and the Superman films? They thought he was overspending so they fired him and didn't let him complete Superman 2.

  • @SuperDave1426

Fun facts, which may have been mentioned by others below: Rod Sterling wrote the screenplay for this movie; that ending was a twist added by him. The book that this was based on didn't end that way. Also, in the book the apes were a lot more advanced, with flying cars and so on. It would have been way too expensive at the time they made this to do that, so they made the city and vehicles more primitive since that was cheaper.
And the film won an honorary Academy Award for the make-up effects! :)

    • @firebird7479
      @firebird7479 2 года назад

Each subsequent sequel had a progressively lower budget than the previous and it shows in the make up and costume designs, especially "Escape From The Planet of The Apes" and "Battle for the Planet of the Apes".

    • @RyanPeterson23

I get frustrated when people say that Tim Burton was trying too hard to one-up the ending of the original film, when his ending was, in fact, more in line with the actual ending in the book. In the book (if I remember correctly) it's clear it couldn't be Earth as it's a planet around a red giant so even the planet's sun looks different. But I understand that once Pierre Boulle saw this movie, he lamented that he hadn't thought of that ending himself.
The main problem with this movie today (as much as it's one of my favorites) is that so many other movies and stories were significantly influenced by this one to the point where it's much easier to guess the ending of this one which lessens the impact.

    • @spencerbookman2523
      @spencerbookman2523 2 года назад

@@RyanPeterson23 Yeah, if I remember correctly, the ape society in the book is portrayed as better than human society. I think they even help the main human character to return home. Humans are portrayed as having a tendency to degeneracy. I think the Tim Burton movie creates a hybrid ending between the book and the 1968 movie.

To answer you question at 20:10 , In the first movie of the new trilogy (Rise of the Planet of the Apes), there is a background news report mentioning the launch of the space craft Icarus to Mars. Later in the movie it is reported the ship is lost in space. The name of Taylor's ship in this movie has also been established to be named the Icarus. So yes, the new movies attempted to setup a related time-line (very subtly).

There are three original Planet of the Apes movies that I would recommend. This one, the third one (Escape from the Planet of the Apes) and the fourth (Conquest of the Planet of the Apes). The fourth film was actually the film that introduced the character of Caesar originally.
Unlike today, the rule of thumb was to reduce the budget of each subsequent sequel, since sequels were expected to make less money. Each of the Planet of the Apes movies following this one had its budget slashed in half each time. The fact that the third and fourth still managed to tell a compelling story, despite their diminutive budgets, always impressed me. I think the second film (Beneath the Planet of the Apes) just wasn't thought out well enough - rushed into production. By the time they got to Battle for the Planet of the Apes, the fifth entry, there was little money left to show the battle in anything like the scale we would have made it today.
It's always a shame to me, when I watch a reaction to this film, that the reactors have all seen the new trilogy - it's a bit like seeing the prequels before the original Star Wars trilogy. It spoils the biggest twists. You, at least, recognised how the last scene would have blown the mind of audiences in 1968. It's just a shame you weren't in the position to enjoy that reveal yourselves.

I grew up on these movies, and I grew up on the TV show. This was an all-star cast. Roddy McDowell was a child star who graduated into adult roles. He was known in the 1940s for his movies with a young Elizabeth Taylor. Charlton Heston was one of the most famous actors of his time. James Daly, was well known for his role in the TV Series, "Medical Center". Kim Hunter was an accomplished actress. Maurice Evans was known for his role as Samantha's father in the 1960s sitcom, "Bewitched". James Whitmore, was brilliant a actor. Whitmore's son, James Whitmore, Jr., went on to have a substantial career as an actor, and director of such TV Series as "The Good Wife", "Quantum Leap", "Cold Case" and "NCIS".
They say that while the movies was being made, during meal breaks, the actors who were portraying the apes, all sat according to which ape they were -- Chimps with Chimps, Gorillas with Gorillas and Orangutans with Orangutans.

Ignore the "horrible" ratings. @@MoMoMyPup10 I'd say to think of Escape, Conquest, and Battle as a set of cosmic alterations of the future. Caesar's messianic path from the 2010s trilogy did indeed happen and was the start of it, and "Beneath" was the end of it, but once the events in Escape happened, it created an alternate timeline, and Caesar still became the hope of ape-kind, but within different settings and pathways. Kinda like in Back to the Future, when Marty inadvertently altered his family's life when he went back in time. Great difference from what they were at the film's start, and what they were at the end of it... "Timey-wimey" stuff, lol.

The Original 5 are well worth talking about. They were groundbreaking and thought provoking.
If you only watch the new trilogy & the original 1968 - yes, you could speculate a link to the stories - it works but it is a false link. You MUST watch all 5 of the originals to get the real original story. All 5 original are connected. Watch all 5 or you are missing a much deeper story.
The original 5 had both a TV live action series and an animated series spin off due to popularity. Also the stand alone movie and the Trilogy.
    *NO SPOILER COMPARISON:*
*New Trilogy* - Yes, worth watching. Better special effects, more action. Great movie pacing. A different story but does draw much from the original 5 as a tribute to the greater original story.
Weaknesses - The story does not require much thinking. It's straight forward in concept and social commentary. Story holds the viewers hand. Not very deep. Much weaker modernized sci fi concepts derivatized from the original 5.
*2001 version* - A stand alone movie. Very disappointing. Great make up jobs on the apes. Garbage script. A poor attempt at capturing certain sci fi elements of the original 5 and flipping them to make its own story. Just a curiosity for those who have seen the original 5. Certain script elements are incorporated in attempt to be smart or wow the crowd with nostalgia. They fail on both counts and look stupid for trying.
*Original 5* - THOUGHT PROVOKING. Best overall story IMO. Low budget and weak on special effects. Expect an epilogue twist ending of major importance for each film.
Strengths - To understand the entire story it requires sci fi thinking coupled with some speculation from the viewer. This is a weakness if the viewer doesn't have that ability.
Far deeper in both social commentary and sci fi concepts than the later versions. The epilogue of each film introduces a twist of tragedy - with the possible exception of the epilogue of the 5th and final film. The 5th epilogue alone is reason enough to power through all 5 films. Brilliant & pioneering sci fi.
Weaknesses - Miss a key sentence and you could miss a crucial element to the story. You won't even know if it is crucial until a later callback is made in a later movie. Speculation becomes paramount in the enjoyment of these films. These movies expect a sharper audience and do not hold the viewers hand. Miss it and you lose part of the story.
Other weaknesses - The budget drops with every subsequent movie. Not always the best in story pacing. (depends on the movie in question).
"Beneath The Planet of the Apes" (the 2nd movie) - Bit of a cash grab. Some elements are added as attempts to wow the audience. Really poorly written plot movement but there is strength in some social commentary. Important to the overall story but the weakest film IMO.
"Escape from the Planet of the Apes" (3rd movie) - Fans of Rod Serling (Twilight Zone) will really appreciate the final 3 movies. Many sci fi concepts are introduced. Some are blatant, some are subtle. All are important.
"Conquest of the Planet of the Apes" (4th) - Very important sci fi elements are introduced. Requires viewer speculation as well as call back knowledge.

"Battle for the Planet of the Apes" (5th) - Strong on social commentary. Some weak plot elements and pacing. Speculation crucial. Really hurt by the rock bottom budget.
Crucial speculation from the viewer and strong call back knowledge is required. The epilogue is absolutely brilliant in how it ties together all 5 movies in a way that leaves much speculation from the viewers.

This movie was way ahead of its time. Also, it is more than a Sci Fi Movie, it is a Social Commentary on the Human Species from the beginning of time. The tone is set in the first few minutes as Taylor ask the people 700 years advance "Does man still make war on his brother, while letting his neighbors starve to death.... Dr. Zeus knows what happened, that a Nuclear War, caused by humans destroyed the Planet and through evolution the Simion Race evolved. The "Forbidden Zone " is from Nuclear Fallout. And the reading by Cornelius of the scoll on The Human Race is VERY Important to the Context of the Final Ending....Also, you have to put this is the context it was made.. In the 1960s we were on the Brink of Nuclear War with the USSR, The Vietnam War was causing riots throughout the country, the Civil Rights Movements were too. People miss the Free Love part Taylor Talks About to Nova. " We made love, but there was No love"....Finally the first thing Taylor is able to say is a movie classic, ranked up in the top 10 of movie lines " Get your Stinking Hands off me you damn dirty Ape "...... Also, it is based off a French Novel Plannet of the Apes, but in the novel the Ape Civilian is far more advanced and the Story dies Not come close to following the novel....

Without giving spoilers, if you watch the remaining movies in this first series, you learn the true origin story of Cesar. I hope you will continue this series despite what any reviews say. This was a cultural phenomenon in the '70s leading to action figures, play sets, an animated series, a live action television series, and tons of cultural references for decades following.

This first movie is by far the best of the original series but the last trilogy was the best series overall. I think Dr Zaius let him go at the end because he knew what Taylor would find. He knew that it would destroy Taylor. I think his words "You may not like what you find" was Zaius relishing the thought of Taylor realizing Zaius was right about humans all along. The irony of course is that it shouldn't have surprised Taylor. At the start of the movie he already has a dim view of humanity. Zaius was just the ape version of Taylor.

@@RKnights At the end, I don't think he saw Taylor as a threat. Taylor was leaving. The cave would be sealed. Taylor had nowhere to go but a wasteland. Taylor was a symbol of the threat. The threat of course is intelligent humans. At the end I think Zaius realized Taylor wasn't a sign that intelligent humans were coming. He originally thought Taylor came from a previously undiscovered community of intelligent humans in the forbidden zone. But at the end Taylor was not talking and acting like he knew where he was or like he had people out there. He was talking and acting like he was the only one. So Zaius relaxed and was content to let him go.

I saw this when it first came out, as a senior in high school. Turbulent times - with the war, assassinations of Robert Kennedy & Martin Luther King, and turmoil in the streets. This was a welcome fantasy to leap out of that for a short time. The humans and the apes had switched places in the hierarchy, and it was fantastic in its' sets, costumes, etc. I enjoy seeing these older movies, and the Twilight Zone episodes and your appreciation of some of these older things. Good job! BTW, what happened to The Pacific episodes?

Mark 20:30. Yes! Your notion is essentially correct, because the trilogy is a prequel to this movie. 👍
Just like with, "Star Trek", the visual aesthetics are different, because of technological improvements.
However, there's the, Time Travel Debate. Has one timeline been altered many times over? Or were variants created? 🤔. The, "MCU", brought back the debate for this franchise. It is complicated by characters being recast, and some cast members playing more than one character. Especially actor, Roddy McDowall. 🦍

      The newer trilogy really isn’t a prequel, it’s a re-imagining of it.
The origins of talking apes and Caesar are explained in “Escape From the Planet of the Apes”, and “Conquest of the Planet of the Apes” from the original series.

@Parallax-3D ! Hmm. That isn't what I read or heard. 🤔🤷‍♂️. Back when we had a working method of viewing television, the reports that I saw and heard said that they were "prequels" but however, because of time-travel shenanigans , they may as well be a reimagined reboot.

Me personally I consider all planet of the apes movies apart of the same universe...
I like to view the reboots as a prequel to the original movie

These are a couple other classic sci-fi movies that have a similar feel to Planet of the Apes and same kind of engrossing story I highly recommend:
    The Time Machine (1960)
    Logan's Run

Let's face it...seeing this FINALLY puts part of the end of Spaceballs into perspective, doesn't it? 🙂

The modern ape trilogy is a prequel and also a reboot to the original movie
