Why to fix , if everybody has same problem, it means there is a mistake in these cables Apple produces, I am a big Apple fan but I bought more than 20 cables for my 2 iPhones in the last 5 years

    •  5 лет назад +16

I'm an Apple user since 2006 and I'm so disappointed in some areas of Apple quality. For instance, this cable issue... Buying a new one and throwing the old one in a trash bin is the simplest way. The 3-foot wire is not a big problem in a one trash bin, but if You multiply this X times... That's why repairing things if it's possible is so important. Less electro trash = better future for the next generations. Apple is so worried about the environment, so why are they selling such a garbage? It made me sad and angry!

LONG NEEDLE NOSE PLIERS work the BEST! Insert the head of the pliers into the tube and then open the pliers. The handles of the pliers give you the leverage and control you need to stretch the tube without breaking/tearing. I can stretch a tube in about 30 secs with the needle nose pliers versus other methods.

    •  5 лет назад +1

Long needle nose pliers do the job. This video is DIYish as possible ;)

Pick up some heat shrink tubing that has an ID of between 6 and 6.5mm. Look for a shrink ratio of at least 3:1. 4:1 if you can find it. That will eliminate the need to stretch smaller ID 2:1 tubing. It will make for a simpler, and better repair.

  • @AceDublB

Personally, I think a better repair would include shrinking the tubing over the molded plastic part of the plug to help reinforce the entire cable and limit flexing at the weak point. I just did this and it virtually eliminated the flexing. I used a small diameter heat shrink tube and used the scissors to expand the tube so that I could get it over plug.

This solution will only work for replacing the damaged insulation, if the wires are damaged it won’t do anything

I was going to say the same thing. Is there a solution for damaged wires?

    • @flightworks6874
      @flightworks6874 5 лет назад +2

Tasneem Mountaj if the break is further down the wire, you can solder the wires together but if it’s close to the plastic connector part you will need to cut into the plastic carefully and desolder the wires from the pcb then solder the wires back onto the pcb and insulate the whole thing with heat shrink and hot glue. A lot of work so if that’s the case you’re better off buying another cable and ensure that you only buy an apple or apple verified one because most offbrand ones will not work and a pop up will show on ur screen saying the cable is not apple verified, even if it works at first, after you update your iOS then the cable might not work anymore.

    •  5 лет назад +1

@@P2BS97 the time and cost of repairing fully damaged wire in most cases are unprofitable. If you need to repair broken connectivity you need to use a soldering iron.

Yesterday I discovered similar errors on the iPhone.
There are two different types of tubes, low and high quality. The high-quality heat shrinking tubes are easier to stretch. The low-quality ones are made with the kinda shiny material/plastic. The better quality tubes are matt (they look and feel similar to the new Apple cords). The high-quality tubes are more expensive, and hard to find, but worth it! Let me know how it goes!

    •  5 лет назад +2

Yes, good point. The self-fusing silicon rubber electrical tape is easier and faster and way much better than regular electrical tape but doesn't look good as a heat shrinking tube. At least in my opinion. In this video, it's all about the good-looking effect. It's a hard way but looks more esthetic.

if the cable no needs soldering just use heat shrinking tube as it is shown in this video. If the cable needs soldering, and if you don't have that kind of skill than you need to go to a local electrician service or buy a new one (if the cost of repair is higher than brand new charger unit).

On the one I fixed the wire braid had unraveled a bit. I twisted it gently until I found the right position for it to sit like it was supposed to. Then I would recommend using some electrical tape to hold in securely, then put the heat shrink on right over top. I actually didn't bother with the electrical tape as I couldn't find where mine was at the time! Seems to be fine so far =)

I bought it in a local hardware store (electrical department). Just google "heat shrinking tube 4.8 mm shrinking to 2.8 mm" or visit a hardware store in your neighborhood.

It's important to cut a little bit more white plastic cover from the cable in damaged place to prevent from further cracking. In 1:58 and 2:25 I'm showing why the cut is very important. In 3:06 I'm cutting a small amount of the white plastic cable to make some distance between both parts of the damaged cable. After over one year mine and my friends repaired cables, looks and works pretty fine.
