    Was it worth the wait? This was an extremely difficult video to make, but I'm proud of the outcome. FEAR 2 is the most controversial game in the series. It's time to find out why.

    I would argue that Alma cares about you in FEAR 2 and attempts to turn you to her side. She saves your life at least twice in the game - one being when you are locked in the arena and the Replicas are reactivated you hear her say "you should hide" before she clears a path for you and another is when she saves you from one of the abominations right before it is about to kill you. The flashbacks are just a way for the player/character to empathise with her and realise she isn't really the bad guy in all this. That and the whole ending where she puts your hand on her pregnant belly as opposed to killing you. I like the subtlety in the story.

      Hard to say. She also physically attacks you in various parts of the game and I'm pretty sure if you don't right mouse click and play those boring quicktime events she kills you. I get the impression she's a mentally unstable and twisted character though so she likely has mixed feelings towards the protagonist. I also think If Monolith had done the last game and they continued on with the same writers there might have been some kind of unconventional love story between Becket and Alma. I would have quite enjoyed that.

    The difficulty issues in FEAR 2 come from the health system. FEAR 2 was developed from day one using regen health. But, due to fan backlash, Monolith changed it. Bringing back healthpacks and health pickups.
    But, this came very late in development. At a point, when most of the game had already been balanced around the regen health system. This also includes how the enemy AI was changed, and how the level design was made.

      Hate to be the armchair historian but it would be interesting if they could introduce health packs while retaining the same mechanics of the regen system. That is, make health packs ubiquitous but the player has to take cover for 5-10 seconds in order to fully apply it a la Far Cry.
      This might change the perception of the whiny fanbase while also not conflicting with the game mechanics in a big way imo

      FEAR 3 is the worst game of the series and its all deserved. They completely flopped Fettel's character in the 3rd. Him being a crazy pyschopath cannibal in the first then he goes to just being an annoying jackass not scary at all in the third. The game is just plastered with arcade style bullshit that shouldnt be in a FEAR game. Seeing how you get points from doing everything from killing to picking up items completely destroys the great gloomy, dark aesthetic the previous FEARs gave the player. The level design in this game is absolutely abysmal, so abysmal that a couple maps in the game (the brazil maps) are just a complete copy paste of Call of Duty MW2's Favela singleplayer map. The people that made this game were so mediocre that they just copied maps from AAA studios to try and up their game. The game is absolute shit, and thats why we havent played a FEAR 4 yet.

    I was trying to put my finger on why I love yours and Raycevick's content and not other long-form critiques, like Joseph Anderson and such. And then it hit me. The better a game is, the more time you spend actually talking about why it's good. Like, 90% of the original F.E.A.R review is praising and explaining the combat and then about 10% is talking about where it fails and nit-picking, which is fine. I love that, a critique isn't nit-picking for a fucking hour and a half, it's looking at the great, the good, the bad and ugly and putting that all together to come to a conclusion. Keep it up.

    The biggest mistake of FEAR 2 was trying way too hard to be cool, instead of being fun. Its glowy sci-fi aesthetics and attempts at "cinematic" moments just makes it look like a HALO/COD wannabe. When it's not trying that and actually put the work in to be a solid shooter, that's when it truly shines.

    • @BillBilliamson
      @BillBilliamson 5 лет назад +24

      FEAR 2 isn't really trying to be cool though and even for what it was going for, it isn't trying too hard. I'd argue the problem is just that it didn't focus more on the fun where as the aesthetics and cinematic moments are pretty good, better than some moments in HALO and COD.

    Why does the HUD looks so bad compared to the original? Consoles. It has to be readable from a sofa so you need large text and icons. Overscan on TVs might also be an issue (edges might get cut off) so you have to shift everything towards the centre of the screen. The distracting lines which are the icing on the cake are the one thing you can't blame consoles for. For a similar example check out the original Deus Ex vs. Invisible War.

      It's exceptionally bad even for a console shooter. There are loads of console-only games that have extremely minimal hud and by careful design considerations it doesn't matter that the HUD is limited, other cues are used instead.

    When I think FEAR 2, I remember turning Replicas into paste with the mech. I didn't even remember the whole thing about Alma wanting to rape Beckett until a friend mentioned it a few years later. I also only remember using the pump shotgun and the sniper rifle, because they had a good enough feedback. Can't for the life of me remember any scary points in it, though. It's probably because of the lighting. The first FEAR could get literally dark because of the flashlight I was discouraged to use for multiple reasons, like the Replicas spotting me because of it. FEAR 2 didn't really try to do that with the exception of a few areas. It's not a bad game, but also not something I'd yearn for. Really, the only reason I bought the game again was because the entire trilogy was on sale and the first FEAR was the spearhead.

  • @abloodraven3856
    @abloodraven3856 6 лет назад +23

    Nice video.
    On the Replica Soldiers, though, here's what I feel is a good explanation.
    The Psychic Commander's aren't micromanaging every little detail of the army; that'd be maddening, incredibly taxing on the mind of the Commander. A more efficient system, however, would be providing overall objectives and goals to the army, as well as on-the-fly mission updates, and letting them use their initiative to carry out that objective.
    We do see in FEAR 2: Reborn that there are Replica Soldiers serving in a command function, ordering squads to specific locations, giving them smaller sub-objectives that would help in completing the primary objectives.
    So when Alma took control of them in FEAR 2, she likely broadcast two vague objectives: find Beckett, and kill Armacham. However, due to their vagueness, the Replica Soldiers could very easily misinterpret the 'Find Beckett' order as a terminate order, considering how these guys are soldiers bred for tasks like that.

    FEAR 2 is yet another case of a game that, on its own, isn't too bad but fails as a sequel. When I played FEAR 2, I didn't have many hours into FEAR 1 (let alone finished expansions) so I didn't quite know what I was missing (In particular the final lines in the second expansion of FEAR 1 suggests much bigger events to come, which FEAR 2 does not seem to portray).
    Although, as you say, the second half was pretty good. I enjoyed the mech a lot too, I also remember the street levels in general vividly.
    The expansion was pretty neat too in my opinion.
    Also Alma was just a little bit too appealing when she presented herself to Beckett, in particular at the end. Maybe if the other female character was more of an obvious love interest and the game hints at a growing relationship, a future for the two of them, only to have it taken away by Alma, the final events in the game would've been a lot more dark. Not taking into account FEAR3's Beckett but I don't tend to see it as a real continuation, much like FEAR 2 wasn't to FEAR 1.

Back in the olden days, an "automatic pistol" didn't mean that it was fully automatic, just that the operation was automatic as opposed to having more input to operate. The nomenclature of "automatic shotgun" is a hold-over from this previous understanding of an "automated" action.

      I feel like the extreme realism is something that was not appreciated and wasn't up until we found out just how much it immerses us in the experience. Compared to now, where lack of passion in AAA releases are immediately recognizable.

    • @Userius1
      @Userius1 4 года назад +2

      @@DisDatK9 The only problems with Far Cry 2 for me were
      1. The constantly respawning enemies. I would often find myself just speeding through an area in a vehicle not giving a damn because I couldn't be bothered to kill the guys I already killed literally 1 minute of driving ago before realizing I needed to go the other way.
      2. On console, the lack of a quicksave and those stupid save boxes that become irrelevant on the PC version.
      3. Stealth is somewhat broken or just very particular. Never bother trying to stealth kill with the machete.
      That said, it was nice to have an FPS that didn't hold your hand and that could be played for over 20 hours instead of the common short under 8 hour trend that was starting to take place.

    Ayy that's my video at 7:40. (It's the F.E.A.R. 2 All Guns shown video for those curious)
    Also automatic just means self loading with guns. It doesn't mean fully automatic. So a semi auto is automatic.
    I just have to say. fuck that sniping part near the tram sequence. Enemies constantly pour out, it's glitchy, can randomly one shot you, and is extremely defensive. It's just camping with a sniper before you can move on. The one thing you neglected to mention about the combat is that the enemy no longer come out in squads. They just pour out at you like you're playing cod or something. So the enemies talking to each other doesn't mean any thing and you don't know how many enemies exist in an area any more.
    I, again, really disagree with the horror. I thought it was done very well in F.E.A.R. 1. The problem was it was scripted so it doesn't work in numerous play throughs, only once. As for F.E.A.R. 2. The horror was awful with only that one school section being well done. Nothing else.

Instead of a co-op game with one character who can slow time, and one character who can possess others, a situation in which one character clearly has an advantage over the other, why not have a co-op game between two characters with reflex? A game where Fettel is trying to reach Alma's baby and once again he's an antagonist, while Point Man and Beckett are trying to stop him and take the baby. That way as a recurring boss fight you could have Fettel taking over Beckett's body and having him shoot Point Man, and while Fettel is possessing Beckett his health goes down and from Beckett's perspective Point Man looks like Fettel. Idk it's just a waste of a character in my opinion.

    I will say re the auto shotgun, "automatic" actually did used to mean what we would call semi automatic too, .45 Automatic Colt Pistol, which is fired out of the 1911, a semi automatic pistol, lot of revolvers were called automatics etc. Basically it meant that rather than you manually charging the gun after every shot the gun would do it itself(as opposed to a pump action, which isn't actually semi automatic as you have to manually charge it), then we started using automatic to mean "press down the trigger and it fires till it's out of ammo" once fully automatic firearms became more common place and semi-automatic became a neologism. Still weird choice game design wise considering most people assume when you say automatic you mean the modern definition but technically they aren't wrong/didn't just forget to make it fully automatic

    Finally... this is the first RUclips video to pull NO punches in savaging this crap. Part of the reason for the brain-dead AI in “Project Origin” is because of the change in map design - replacing the open combat arenas of the original “F.E.A.R.” with linear corridors, to accommodate weaker console hardware. Indeed, the franchise’s consolisation in “Project Origin” explains the faults in the second game. The immersive shadows and particle effects of the original were reduced, to accommodate consoles. The lovely physics and visual effects of slow motion were removed entirely, to avoid framerate drops. Even the art design and movement speed of enemies were altered to cater to console controllers, with cartoonish colours and slow enemies to simplify aiming. Ultimately the game became like every other generic shooter, something the original “F.E.A.R.” had explicitly tried to avoid.
    But for what it's worth, if anyone's wondering, you kill 795 enemies in “Project Origin”.

      To be fair, the plot and characters in “F.E.A.R. 3” are so bad that... they don't exist. (For Pete's sake, what happened to Aristide, Betters, Holiday, etc.?) But... where “F.E.A.R. 3” does excel in comparison to “Project Origin” is in gameplay and (arguably) graphics, which is where the developers clearly focused most of their effort. Enemies are faster and smarter now, open combat arenas have returned, particle physics and weapons are meatier, and the dynamic lights and shadows are arguably superior even to the first game - no small feat, given that “F.E.A.R. 3” was designed for the same console hardware as “Project Origin”.

If that was not enough they look like comic book bad guys in f.e.a.r 2. The entire somewhat realistic style of the first game thrown out the f**king window for neon. What a wasted sieries. You know your sequel is bad when fan fiction like "Perseus Mandate" -- which admittedly has its own issues -- still has better graphics and gameplay then the actual, official sequel. "F.E.A.R. 3" may have been too similar to "Call of Duty" for its own good -- but unlike "Project Origin", it didn't suffer from the same massive graphical downgrade that should NEVER happen in a videogame sequel. I did a complete playthrough of the "F.E.A.R." franchise on my channel, and "Project Origin" looks like a prequel with inferior graphics and bad audio. Hell, if you played the game without audio or dialogue, you wouldn't even know it was a "F.E.A.R." sequel.

    here's something I noticed about F.E.A.R. 2 that I haven't seen anyone give it credit for: every single cutscene is in first person, the camera *never* leaves the POV of the player. in the first game this happened occasionally, the third game switched to third person in every cutscene (which were also pre-rendered), but the second one was very consistent in its dedication to the first person perspective from start to finish. I think this greatly helps the immersion, and overall it's a positive aspect of this game. there was, however, one part where it worked to its detriment: the very beginning of the game, the intro sequence where you walk through a ruined street - it simply pales in comparison to the intro sequence of the first F.E.A.R..
