- For the first time in the almost 13 years I owned my 2008 Dodge Ram 1500 I needed to do a repair on it. It had to happen sooner or later - LOL! it was tossing a OBD2 Trouble code and I needed a code reader to find out what it was.
Anyway, I went down to @HarborFreight and picked up a #Zurich #OBD2 Code #Reader. In this video I show my experience with it and tell the world whether or not I like it - ;o)
a scanner something you need but wish you never need !
There could not be a more true statement than yours. Makes the job of diagnosis much more easy than poking around in the dark.
Know this is an old video but just bought one of these...very easy to set up, understand the manual and run some diagnostics. This scanner was more descriptive than Auto Zone's - gave me more options to resolve the dreaded P0171 for Ford trucks. Got the problem fixed so its already paid for itself but wasn't quite as straightforward as the app suggested. Drive cycles were a bit confusing but after realizing I was overthinking it (and no, scanner is not left on / plugged in during the cycles), I went through just a couple of drives / idle situations as called for in the procedures and the red blinking lights cleared. Great value for the money. Would edit all the unwrapping stuff out of the video if done over but otherwise, very helpful.
I have one. Saved me a ton of money on the first go! Mechanic wanted $650 for a repair. I bought the part for $48 at O’ Reilly’s. Watched a RUclips video and made the fix right along with it. Took me maybe 20 minutes. What a dishonest prick!
I know! The average consumer can hook one of these things up and do a simple Internet search for the problem code. Thanks for the comment
Not a bad scanner.... I had the zr11 I liked and it served me well sold it to my buddy for $75 and got the zr13...and fixed my other buddy's 05 ram for the price these are pretty good for a DIY.
Yes, I've never had a code reader before. i was glad i was able to find the problem with this one. Do you find the more advanced functions of the #ZR13 to be useful? I went with the #ZR8 because I didn't think I needed the advanced functions and the price was more than I wanted to spend at the time. Maybe if this one breaks down I'll spend the extra bucks for a better unit. Thanks for watching!
@@PhillipCeriale Some of the features on the zr13 only work on the latest of cars 2017up... I do like that you can record data on four pids I'm waiting for a new update to come and see what they add to it.
@@moparnut6286 Cool! Post a video if they do a update. i subscribed to your channel today - you got some really neat things going there.
@@PhillipCeriale thanks for the sub....and will do.
I'm really surprised more products aren't destroyed getting them out of the package. Or, more lawsuits aren't levied as a result to emergency rooms form box cutter mishaps. 😅
LOL!🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I've had a ZR8 for a couple of years and have been pleased w/ it too. I gave you a like on your video. Now... to something more important... You really should give up smoking Phillip. We kinda like you.
Thanks for watching the video. Yes, smoking is the bane of my existence.for sure.Tried quitting a couple of times without success.:o(
@@PhillipCeriale It took me two fails and a third hard try get stopped... Pack and a half a day at the time I was 23... been 50 years since I made it. You can too! But you have to want to quit.
@@SKYGUY1 that's awesome - 50 Years! thanks for the encouragement...
Does this work with Japanese??
I just bought one, you helped me getting a read, i was using accessory. Instead of ignition.
Very cool! Did the ZR8 have any trouble codes to read on your car? Thanks for stopping in.
I realize Im kinda off topic but does anyone know of a good place to watch new movies online?
Thank u I'm going to buy one today!
You are welcome! You won't regret it. A great tool.
Thanks for watching.
Thank u I bought it today because my car didn't want to start it was something electrical and it came out being the engine control module and I literally had an idea of how to use it because of ur video thank u so much !
@@eduardogomez7681 Thanks again!
WELL DONE PHILLIP
HOPE THE ZR-8 I JUST BOUGHT YESTERDAY DOES THE SAME FOR MY GMC TERRAIN SLE.
Did everything work out good for you. I was holding off with the reply to find out what you found out about your GMC. Thanks for stopping in!
Are you kidden me dude...yeaaa you got the package open
You know the Dodge 1500 check's codes by itself
They all do and can be read with little difficulty and car make specific intricacies. However, this unit and those like it provide a seamless way of diagnosis and many, many other functions. Well worth the money if that is what you are insinuating.
I believe to reset the computer or new part replacement it's like 80 miles at 40 50 miles an hour from what I understand. I have an old cheap obd2 scanner and I believe I'm going to buy this one. Great video review btw..
Thanks for the tips and thanks for stopping by!
On every vehicle that I've owned that had the check-engine light come on, the problem was either a faulty sensor or the wiring going to it... It has NEVER been an actual problem with the engine or whatever was being monitored, only the useless add-on circuitry that tries to monitor those systems. On the Ram 1500 that I owned, I had a check-engine light come on because the sensor that checks the brake fluid level had gone bad. Unfortunately, no way to replace that sensor without having to replace the entire brake fluid reservoir. I grew up in a time when a car owner was expected to periodically check his brake, oil, and other fluid levels, so that sensor is completely useless to me, but my locale will not allow a vehicle to pass its yearly inspection with the check-engine light lit, even if it is lit because of a problem something that is not even required to be checked. As such, my solution was to determine the correct resistance that the sensor should be returning as a "good" signal and put that across the connectors in the plug after disconnecting it from the sensor.
Where do you find the instructions on line?
There is a link on the product page.
Can it be used in a diesel pickup truck?
On the live data setting it says im getting 6 psi and it bounces to 7psi. Is that 60 psi to 70 psi or is it actually 6 psi?
i used it and like it abs code for 72.00 love it
Yes Sir! Best bang for the buck for sure. Thanks for stopping in and taking a look.
Does it keep needing updates after all this time you had it? Can it AutoBleed the ABS modulator valve and other parts of that system (can you show those screens)?
No auto bleed
Does this work on a BMW Z3 , 2001? Or I need a different version?
I don't think the Z3 was produced in 2017. Anyway, this code reader will work with most imports. LOL! EDIT TO ADD: That is a question mark and not a 7 - ROTFLMAO!
Hello will this scanner clear mercedes transmission codes?
Any standard OBD2 code can be read and cleared with this unit.
Watching to see if I ships buy this but that music makes me wanna play Mario lol
"Mario" - LOL! I never noticed that until you mentioned it. Maybe a latent memory on my part coming through on video - ;o)
😉😉😉
Are you able to check the voltage of a sensor thru the live data ?
Depends on which sensor.. Also, since a sensor doesn't produce voltage but instead does a pass through output depending on what is being measured it will more than likely be able to tell you if the overall system is healthy and not throwing any codes Thanks for watching.
does this show transmission codes?
It shows all DTC's stored in the computer. It also has a cool manufacture specific error code section that is cool as heck!
Can this erase the vsa and the awd light?
Does this one clear engine codes on foreign vehicles too? Not SRS and ABS, just standard codes
From what I understand, anything with a OBD2 connection it will work on. Including all foreign and domestic (USA). Says so on the box - LOL! Thanks for watching and leaving a comment.
Says on box not Asian or European......but I think it does Asian?? Just got
One debating getting the zr11
Is there a list of the makes it covers?
Most all OBD2 equipped cars. Get the downloadable update... Thanks for watching.
Do you need to use the app to work it?
No app needed. It is a stand alone capture device. Just plug it into the OBD2 port and go. Thanks for watching!
are you able to program a key fob with this?
No. Thanks for stopping by and taking a look!!
can this read abs sensors ?? to let you know which one is bad ?
yes domestic abs only
Does it read tranmision temp and if not anyone know a cheap scanner that will live data
That is what I would like to know as well.
No
Hi, will this tool diagnose abs system as well?
It will let you know what codes are being thrown out. Then you can take that information and repair the car. Thanks for watching!
yes abs reading on this i have it
You can’t check live misfire counts ?
it has live data, I just got one but I would think you can as I watched my O2 sensors live with a graph
Thanks again Tom! nailed it!
@@tomr3422 Does it give you 02 sensor voltage
@@kckrol85its voltsge, for both the up and down stream sensors. Not sure what the update interval is but its pretty fast.
@@tomr3422 Thanks
Bought a more expensive one and it didnt do what it claimed. Harbor freight did not stand behind this product
Sorry to hear that....
Mine keeps saying read pc for directions....🤔
it says that when you connect to a pc to update it? Thats when mine says that, you down load and install the obd updater from the HF website and then it will tell you if there is a update available.
Exactly! Thanks for answering Tom.
tom nailed it on the head.
I just put it on my other car and it worked fine. Then returned and hooked it up to car I was repairing and it worked fine. Thank you though. Now I know how to update it.🙂
@Nº Gimmicks No... Thanks for watching!
Does it give you real time info while driving too?
Yes, there is a section for getting some data shown - Thanks for watching.
Can this reset a throttle body?
There is no "Reset" of any Throttle Body made since it isn't a programmable part. You will be able to reset DTD codes contained in the ECU however. Thanks for watching.
Who cares about unpacking ?
You do and you know you do. That's what you do and that is what you want. Admit it!. Come clean and rejoice with the truthful inner self you released. Thanks for watching and thank you very much for leaving a comment. Stop by again when you like and don't forget to subscribe if you haven't already. - ;o)
Very very basic. You won't get the codes you get on an expensive one.
What codes do you not get returned? I'll wait...
It seems it doesn’t take a genius to open anpckage
It seems it is better to be quiet and be thought of as a jerk than open up ones mouth and relieve all doubt...
