I love my Ultraventure 3's. Such a great road to trail shoe. Also a great winter shoe for me here in Canada. I'm planning on either the mtn racer or terraventure for a bit more agressive trail shoe come spring. Also, my main road shoe are the Phantom 3's. Not gonna lie, a wide toebox is a game changer for me.
I have both and personally love the terraventure. There isn't a rock plate in the mtn racer. So for me, terraventure it is. But I do like the responsiveness on less sharp rocky trails of the mtn racer
Great effort getting out when you're not 100%, it's always nice to make a return to running after illness Great review and definitely a shoe I'm going to keep an eye out for. Especially in that colourway, it's stunning Cheers and here's to many more great reviews in 2025
Great review ! Everybody has had some respiratory plukus of some sort. Glad you are on the mend. Just bought a pair of these. Trying a roomier toe box. I have a narrowish foot, and the lockdown is great! Just a touch of arch support. A good trainer for road to trail.
I've been sick since Christmas, too. Running the last couple of weeks has been tough. I looking forward to giving this shoe a try. I have the Ultra venture 2. They were pretty good trail shoe.
Seeing you go out in whats gotta be winter temperatures in shorts makes my back ache just from watching xD Especially after you just had a cold, but I guess you have to know how to dress yourself under different conditions. Nice shoes and review also :)
@Run4Adventure Interesting, hadn't thought Cornwall had moderate temperatures during the winter, with all the ocean surrounding you. But I'm glad you do, it's below freezing here in central Europe in the meantime, so all tights weather for me at least :)
I’ve been sick the last few days. I managed to get on the stair stepper yesterday. These Topos look nice. The arch support always hits me wrong and forces me to supinate but for the right foot Topo is good
Great review. I also like bright trail shoes to run in. What do you use and routine to keep them clean and looking good? Keep up the good work. Love running on Towans and around Gwithian when we come down and stay.
I've been a long term fan of Topo Ultraventures. My UV 2s have over 1200kms on them and are still going although I have a second pair that are catching them up. Padding is great and I find them a great road to trail shoes. My only gripe is the insoles - it's a sponge that soaks up water, and if you're unfortunate to get mud in them (which you will, won't you?) it is almost impossible to wash it all out and the insoles gradually gets harder as more mud is absorbed. What are the UV4 insoles like? The new foot-shaped Inov8s (with boomerang insoles) don't suffer this issue.
The first pair of Boomerangs has lasted me over 6,000 km and it's still OK. Topo have recently launched their own TPU insoles, but no tester seems to care about taking the insoles out of UV4s.
There’s been a few comments about the insoles being terrible in the wet in previous version. I’ll make sure I run the 4’s in wet conditions before my full review to test them out 👍
@@weuek I’ve had lots of trail shoes with foam insoles that haven’t caused me any issues in the wet. I agree with you on Boomerang insole though, they’re really good! 👌
I have the previous version which are extremely comfortable. But i dont understand why Topo decided the tread depth is so shallow. Fine for dry terrain but when its muddy they dont get much bite.
I have the UV3 great shoe but this shoe is going to suffer from the same issue. The tread/grip layout is poor. The lugs are too big and too spaced out. They also do not have a defined edge to the lugs, this means on anything but gravel they are slippery. They could easily solve this by removing the tapered grip profile. Did a 30k on the weekend and on wet grass they were quite useless.
I totally agree on the lug pattern Matt, it could be a bit more aggressive when it comes to the lug design. Like I said in the video, they’d really struggle in muddy conditions 👍
@@daniel.konecny Yes it’s still Ortholite Daniel but Ortholite makes a lot of different insoles, is it the same insole that’s in the previous version? 🤔
@@Run4Adventure They must've bought several tons of these insoles and they've put them in all kinds of shoes (road/trail), eg. Specter, Cyclone 2, UV3, Phantom 2, 3, Pursuit. The non-Ortholite firmer foam insoles of the past were way better (e.g. in Magnifly 2).

Nice review. I'm also in a running break due to a health issue and it's driving me mad. Hope you're back to full speed soon.
Get well soon. Recovery takes time.
Great review and HNY. Yup, the lurgies have been all over the place … a couple of rest days have actually been quite restorative!

Get well soon Loyd, you need to be fit and well for the Running Show!!
Thanks Kim 🙏🙂

I live in Cornwall in the UK and it never gets that cold here! I can’t remember the last time I ran in tights, I just get to hot 🥵

I have to test the Ultraventure 4’s with the original insoles first before I switch anything out or it would be a fair test 🤔
@@Run4Adventure You don't really have to. Any sponge insole is terrible in wet conditions. Inov8 Boomerang is a remedy for that.

Hi. Interesting review. Like to Loyd. Now, I have the salomon Sense ride 5. Have a good day.
How is the insole? In the 3rd it was thin and collected water like a dishcloth
Nice socks!
Another here been on a running break Flu and chest infection, 4 weeks managed a Parkrun on Saturday
Sorry to hear that Alan, glad you’re back running and happy New Year 👍🙂

are the topo softer compared to the xodus ultra 3? looking to replace them I found them stiffer than the xodus 2
I’d say the Ultraventure 4’s midsole is a bit softer than the Xodus Ultra 3 👍
It's XS 'Trek', not 'Trail'. Is the insole still this useless Ortholite water-soaking sponge?
I haven’t run the shoes in wet conditions yet so it’s hard to say? 🤔
Yes, still Ortholite.
