Comp is fairly confusing, even for people who drag race. A the end of the day, it is just who gets to the finish line first... In the simplest way, there are like classes within Comp. Think of the NFL as Comp Eliminator. And the AFC East as one of the classes within the NFL, and NFC South as another, etc. Comp has around 90 different classes within it, and NHRA tells you what class you are in based off a bunch of different factors like weight and horsepower. NHRA also tells you what your car technically should run based off of these factors. Pretty much every car runs faster than what NHRA says they should run, but some run faster than others. All you really have to do in comp is get to the finish line first. If you run way much faster than what NHRA says you should run, they can penalize you. It’s usually somewhere around if you run 6 tenths faster or something close to that. If I race in a class where NHRA says I will run 8.00 and I go 7.00, NHRA will “penalize” you by lowering the time they think you can run. So for the next round of eliminations, NHRA might say you will run 7.90 instead of 8.00, which essentially gives you a tenth of a second less of a head start, making it harder for you to win. This is why when someone red lights in comp you see the cars shut off before the finish line. The drivers know the race is over so they don’t want to risk going too fast and NHRA lowers their index for the next round.

It’s bracket racing, but first to the line wins. No breakouts, which is awesome because they’re counter intuitive.
