  • Terence Alan Milligan KBE, 83 (16th April 1918 - 27th February 2002) was a British-Irish comedian, writer, musician, poet, playwright and actor. The son of an Irish father and an English mother, his early life was spent in India where he was born. The majority of his working life was spent in the United Kingdom. He disliked his first name, and began to call himself "Spike" after hearing a band on Radio Luxembourg called Spike Jones and his City Slickers.

Thank God for Spike. Where would comedy be without him? Where would WE be on this earth without him? He was and still is the "sharpest tool in the drawer". One of my fave lines of his is, "I walked into the room. The curtains were drawn but the furniture was real". Absolute genius mind

Thank you for this fine video, I have to thank Spike for saving my nine year old self. I had just lost my father at a mere nine years old when I discovered Sunday rebroadcasts of this thing called The Goon Show on the BEEb BEEb See........The gang took me to a places that I could forget my sorrow for thirty minutes. As I continued to listen to these fantastic tales it grew into a lifelong enjoyment of Spike's work. Especially his written works which are in my library. So thank you Spike wherever you are.

This is a very loving and respectful documentary. Glad to see that Spikes children who where born out of wedlock being both acknowledged and accepted.
Spike was a big part of my life growing up and his humor always struck me as very Irish.
Spike may be gone, but he is not forgotten.

Yes, if you've read his war memoirs, you would know that his father was also very eccentric and humorous. An example was him saying that his mother was a good little woman, and getting smaller every day while he, his brother and father watched her digging an air-raid shelter. About children being born out of wedlock. That's a bloody good thing, as more and more people in the Western World are. That is something that has changed over my lifetime. My father was a stickler for that, but a good thing that I'm not, and my brother wasn't, because our daughters (one each) would be forever be referred to in unkind terms.

A fractured personality who was actually perfect inside but just didn't know it. Wonderful man, human being, perfect father but not so perfect husband with massive regrets.

So pleased to have discovered this insight into Spike's life. I was raised on the Goons as a young lad, in the 60's, on the other side of the world. I feel very privileged to have had the opportunity to spend time with him in the recording and TV studios in the 70's on some his musically memorable work (as a member of the band/orchestra) Bad Jelly, Q series and "Ning Nang Nong" Dear Spike, just unique, miss you heaps.

There are near death experiences, very near death experiences and actual death experiences and you are never truly the same person afterwards, if you are lucky / unlucky enough to come back and survive them. Left in a type of suspended no mans land, not feeling fully anything such as most others do. It is beyond PTSD. It will always be with you. Sometimes just under the surface waiting to strike you down and sometimes actually very debilitating indeed. Not just a struggle to survive anymore but actually exist. Regarding Spikes injuries and what followed.
