So much about this show is molded and informed by the era. In the 90s, a full-time maid who was living rent-free in a shack for 8 years could save up enough to pay the down payment on a cute little one-bedroom house in a small town-notably, Rory's room was likely a dining room converted into a bedroom, which is why the doorway is different and it's right next to the kitchen. The interior design is very New England/East Coast, country style, with some funky lamps and knickknacks thrown in, quite popular in the late 90s and the set designers did a good job making everything look used and worn, like irl we have furniture and appliances from different eras. I love that Rory's little stereo could've come out that year, but her bed frame and a lot of the kitchen appliances are much older. It's giving thrift store, it's giving yard sale, and canonically Lorelai squirreled away a lot of stuff from the inn that was going to be thrown out. Likewise, a coffee at Luke's was only $0.75/£0.57 (until he raised the price by another quarter several seasons later). Eggs, toast, pancakes, and bacon would have cost about $11 in total, and you'll notice Lorelai and Rory never order full plates separately, they decide together what each person wants and then consistently throughout the series split a plate, so that's $5.50 for each. Gilmore Girls at this point is a period piece lmfao, hope you enjoy the show!
Inns (especially in New England) are somewhat prestigious in the US. Like artisan hospitality. Which is why Lorelei’s into it. I think she looks at people in her life for better or worse, as characters, so having an inn is like playing sims to her.
Yeah, I’d say the term “Inn” is pretty common in the US. Typically used for places that are smaller than a “hotel” and probably more often for those outside of a “big city” setting. And, for sure, places like her inn are more like small, boutique hotels… giving “charming” and maybe “quaint”. Hers seems to be the one nice place to stay in this small town. Stars Hollow is a not really big enough for a more regular type of nicer hotel. (And would probably hate any kind of franchised anything anyway.) People who want a Marriott or a Hilton or similar would drive 30 mins to Hartford, which is larger. (This is where Rory’s grandparents live and where her new school, Chilton, is located.)
If you see a place in the US to stay that has “Inn” in the title, it’s probably got a “classy/cozy” vibe… or it wants you to think it does, lol. Oh! And I said this in another comment, but just have to drop here too that there actually IS a backstory reason for why Lorelei works at an Inn. 😊
Rory is annoying: clocked Friday night dinner not being a large request: clocked Dean’s a trash person: immediately clocked Emily being her, an icon, the moment: clocked
Having a weekly dinner with someone not being a large request really depends on how toxic the person/relationship is… I’m not saying this is necessarily a comment on this instance (I think you’ll have to watch and decide for yourself). But just that there are good reasons to distance yourself from some people… and this could be the case here.
@@Danischmell ok so it’s for 50,000 dollars. One dinner a week for 2-3 hours with someone toxic is a deal any working class person would take as Sookie often alludes to. Also I’ve watched this show dozens of times. So given the context of the show, her parents are not that bad to her. Toxic, absolutely, but the show is predicated on exploring this dynamic. Which would not be possible if either Richard or Emily were entirely unforgivable
@@Meanie74 Oh, yes! To be clear, it is SO worth the “cost”… and a deal I’d definitely take! I was just meaning that I could understand how that “cost” could feel heavy. But not at all that the cost was too high! Lorelei’s amazingly lucky to have that option to go to!
@@Danischmell yes exactly! Like the termite plot line. Lorelei has the option to keep her house, only because Emily and she acts like this is an absolute tragedy. Gurl that’s an option that is entirely a privilege, no one else has. Even your kid knows this is a no brainer. Yea Emily is going to hold this over her head, but so what? She already does that, with the other loan. Lorelei’s pride is a literal privilege.
Lorelei in our folklore is a siren, sitting/singing upon a hillside at the Rhine river, causing sailors to crash their ships because they are attracted by and distracted by her beauty. Somehow, I've always found it a very fitting name for Lorelai Gilmore. Loved this show as a young teen in the early 00s and now just think it's unbearable 😂
Oh boy if you don't like Rory now....if doesn't bode well for what's to come😅. And yes you nailed it straight away: Rory and Lorelai are absolutely 'not like other girls' coded. Sadly quite inevitable for the early 2000s.

The New England area of the States (New Hampshire, Vermont, Connecticut, Massachusetts, etc.) probably has a lot of bed and breakfast "inns" and other type of cozy hotels like that, so they're establishing the setting. The inn fits the area in which they live. (Very autumnal as well, lol)
@@BridgetteAmofah Well, to be fair, they do have an episode involving some medieval / Renaissance-fair sort of stuff going on at the inn, lol. So you're not really wrong! 😄🤣 It fits!
I grew up in New England. And, good lord, there are SO MANY inns! Especially in the more rural areas. I lived for a few years in the Berkshires in Western Massachusetts and there must be at least 500 inns in that county alone. 😂
I hope you’re going to do more! As for your questions, there’s actually back story on why the inn… so keep watching! As for Dean, I think it’s her first real “someone my age who seems cute is noticing me” kind of thing.

I think I liked her at first because she was different from a lot of the other young female characters of the time -- she was a bit socially awkward, not particularly experienced, she liked reading, she was smart, and the show embraced those qualities in her. (Plus, she had a great relationship with her mom at a time when my relationship with my own mom involved a lot of fighting, so I think I yearned for a more harmonious relationship like theirs.)
