My killer instinct story. This is absolutely a true story. I was only working part time at Aladdin's Castle in greenfield Wisconsin in 1994 because I had a real career. I kept the arcade gig primarily so I could play for free and the Manager was my best friend plus I could do the bare minimum and keep my timecard. I came in over the weekend that this was released, it was already set up on the floor right by the office door. The arcade was jammed packed, not one of the close to 100 games were available to be played, this was the true golden age of the arcade. There was at least 10 people surrounding Killer Instinct, I remember operation wolf, mrs mac man, star wars or galaga were next to KI because you didn't want to stick AAA games or multiple 2 player games next to each other due to crowding. I could barely see the game but you sure could hear it. WOW! What sound, to me the sound blew away anything and that included the Capcom Q-sound cabs. Anyway I don't know what I ate that day, maybe a gyro but I squeezed my cheeks extra tight because I knew it was going to be bad and dropped the worst silent but deadly fart in my 24 years on this planet. It was so bad that everyone playing the game and standing around watching smelled it. One customer said Jesus Christ! Someone seriously farted! I'm dying inside laughing trying not to tip my hand it was me but no one, not a single person stopped playing or left that death cloud I dropped. Now that is a true testament to the amazement of that game when it was released.
Awesome story! I used to frequent that exact Aladdin's Castle back in the 90s by the "Spring Mall" and yes, 100% accurate about KI! This game drew a crowd everywhere when it came out. I used to work at Toys R Us on 27th Street in the 90s and next door was Olympic Lanes and they had KI there as well. When I would go to lunch, I would go next door and play arcade games. KI had a massive crowd by it, and I just remember watching it over everyone's shoulders. By the time I was actually able to play it I fell in love with it❤! I used Sabrewulf cause he's a "dog". LOL! One time I was playing it and a kid joined in and knew the Eyedol code and bet the tar out of me! Such awesome memories! The 90s was the Golden Age of arcades!!!
At about 13yrs old I used to literally fall asleep with the EGM magazine trying to memorize and study the glacius moves.. This was for the next time I visited Aladdin's castle with my 5$ bill if I was lucky. Your machines are amazing bro.👍🏻👍🏻
I remember seeing Killer Instinct for the first time at the Outer Limits arcade in the Washington, DC area and being totally blown away. Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat were cool but KI took it to a whole nother level with amazing graphics and bombastic sound. I've never been the same since that experience and I'm sure it's part of reason why I still play fighting games today. Thanks for the trip down memory lane KAG!
Awesome video as always brother! Thanks so much for the walk down memory lane! I truly enjoyed your all of your videos so much. I can relate with memories growing up as well. And I first saw Killer Instinct around '94 on SNES. And when I played as Glacius it was so hard to beat Eyedol. Lol but when I tried so many times I was finally able to beat Eyedol. Happy Birthday KAG!!!! 🥳🎉🎂🎊🎈🎉🎁
When I got burned out by SF & MK...KI was my go to. I was a combo fighter already and when this stepped onto the scene, it felt it was made just for me. I was pretty damn good as Fulgore, Sabrewolf, Glacius and Thunder...was beating kids older than me at the arcades. Thank you for highlighting this game!
I love to see old retro games get all the love they deserve to this day I don't see that many people in my daily life even talk about these types of games and I get it they are not that known nowadays but seeing alot of people online talking about their love for the game and how it still holds up to this day even 30 years later makes me smile I was born in the late 2000's and I still love these retro games I am pretty new to this community but I really like it full of fun people and I love seeing the fun stuff you put out for us I hope to own a arcade cabinet one day but till then I will watch you till my day is a good one
Welcome to the community! You’ll get there. Just keep looking for one. The time never feels right but if you find a good deal just get it and you’ll make room!
I remember right before ki came out, i was talking with the video rental store owner , he had a small arcade area in back, next to the adult film entrance lol. One day Steve says " I have a new game coming called killer instinct, its going to be a big hit" well he was right. My first accidental ultra combo was with cinder, i remember that game being soo loud it was awesome!!
great video!! unfortunately, i was a toddler when KI hit arcades, so my first experience with it was with the SNES version. (shout out Killer Cuts, also the first CD I ever owned, still on the daily playlist, and is now framed on my wall lmao) it wasn't til i was old enough to go to the local Family Fun Center when I found the cabinet in the back where they kept all the 90's fighting games. it blew my mind to see a version of the game I grew up playing with better graphics/better sound, etc... i ended up going back every weekend to play it. then in high school, my friends and I would ditch school to go to the closing arcade to play KI and CarnEvil. now I have both of those machines in my home and hearing the bass still fills me with joy. thanks for making this video! also finding out you made that KI website blew my mind because i vividly remember geeking out on that site after school haha
It must have been so weird to only see the SNES version first and then see the arcade. CarnEvil and KI instead of sounds like the right move haha. I mention the site occasionally, hoping to find some of the old users. It’s cool you saw it back then! I hated to close it but people just stopped using websites and moved to facebook groups.
Great story man! I was 13 when I discovered it. When I discovered mk1 at the local mall I was in absolute awe. There was nothing like it. I literally sat and watched the credits for prob 30 mins. That was a long time ago my friend

I have gotten bits and pieces over the past couple years, but I's so fun to share the nostalgia. I wish I had a cab of KI, I'd love to play. I wish I could have gotten the Pro version that just sold out not too long ago. I just don't have the space or cash for it right now. I'll try and catch some of the live on Saturday. It's hard because I'm on the west coast and it's happening when dinner and family time normally does. Anyway, I have been enjoying what you and Darryl Tsung have been putting out lately, it's taking me back to being 16 in 1994 again... such great times.
Chris amazing story my friend! Thank you for sharing, I really enjoyed the video. Your experience reminds me of the first time I saw MK one at my local high school arcade. The hoard of people, the sounds of an opponent being uppercuted, the digitized graphics and the fatalities which were mind blowing at the time. @@KillerArcadeGames I think it was well done. I love to hear peoples stories and experiences with these games. It also gives me serious nostalgia. @KillerArcadeGames Oh okay. You mentioned the graphics being futuristic. I was looking at the background of the stages and they are awesome. Chief Thunders background with the clouds zooming by looks so good.
I must be in the minority liking KI2 over the first KI? I thought the combat was actually more fluid and they added some new mechanics which really made the game deeper I feel. my story is that we went to the capital city and there was this very famous place mundo feliz (happy world) and we went in and we hear the noise and it was of a game new and it was amazing they had it in this big ass arcade cabinet the screen huge it was a special cabinet and wow my brother and i were there and to play it it cost 5 colones which was really expensive but we had to play it haha second char destroyed us but we returned to our city and months later i was walking the streets and i passed by this house downtown and i hear the noise and there it was in a normal cabinet and this time it was only 1 colon and then we i dunno managed to find gamepro magazines and the rest is history i still play it online on fightcade the snes version
I was born in June 29 1990 I honestly can’t remember what age I discovered killer instinct but if I had to guess I was 8. I went to my grandmas and my big brother was staying with her at the time because of school break she bought him a SNES I was so jealous. My parents didn’t have any money they were financially struggling I still had a Nintendo. So my brother had 3 games super mario world, uniracers and killer instinct and I told him why is this game black? He said I don’t know I just told my grandma to buy it for me because it looked cool lol. I didn’t know how to play I sucked but loved the game the characters looked cool and the music was amazing. My brother said choose cinder he’s easy to use just push forward forward Y forward forward Y. That’s all I did when I was a kid just use cinder and spam the hell out of that move. Fast forward maybe 1 or 2 years later I was at the arcade watching people play mortal kombat and seeing the fatalities and then from a distance I heard a very loud Ultra Combo!!!!!. What the hell? and there it was killer instinct on the arcade I did not know this existed I had goosebumps with the AC blowing through my hair when I seen it for the first time. Only one kid was playing that arcade cabinet I was still playing KI on SNES so this was a treat I played with him and I used cinder and I lost but I didn’t care I was to happy to be playing this. I’m still a fan of killer instinct I still play this game to this day from all the years of playing I learned a lot of moves from different characters I came a long way from playing cinder and spamming forward forward Y 😅.
I’ve wanted to build my own garage-arcade in back of my house and this makes that itch worse. I’m honestly surprised about your take on KI1 vs KI2. The controls are a lot better in the second game, so I’ve always preferred it. I will say the intro and original presentation of KI1 is better though.
Ooo, good question. I want to say The Instinct because I loved hearing it in high quality. It’s between that one or KI Feeling. I thought it was interesting to hear orchids song with a singer.
They’re the real machines from arcades back then. You can buy Arcade1Ups, they’re smaller but it’s an option. No one makes a replica of these as far as I know.
I made 1 by myself because the place where i live it is impossible to find a KI cab , was searching for it more then 3 years , 20 years ago i got a dedicated cabinet but sold it then, you can find a video of my self build cab in my profile still need work to do on the bezel and monitor glass

I will say the intro and original presentation of KI1 is better though.
what is your favorite Killer Cuts Song?
Mine is We are Controlling Transmission.
Ooo, good question. I want to say The Instinct because I loved hearing it in high quality. It’s between that one or KI Feeling. I thought it was interesting to hear orchids song with a singer.
We wanted the Ultra 64 but we got the N64 instead.
Did u build these or where can I buy?
They’re the real machines from arcades back then. You can buy Arcade1Ups, they’re smaller but it’s an option. No one makes a replica of these as far as I know.
I made 1 by myself because the place where i live it is impossible to find a KI cab , was searching for it more then 3 years , 20 years ago i got a dedicated cabinet but sold it then, you can find a video of my self build cab in my profile still need work to do on the bezel and monitor glass
is there a way to play it online on pc back in the day i used kaillera but i dnno if the servers are still working thanks
None that I know of currently. FightCade only supports the SNES version.
