I'm 44. I saw Hoffman ride the Florida State Fair in the late 80's early 90's & was inspired. I own a 2000 Mirra 540 Air to this day. I just built a Fiend Raekes frame up for a street/park bike. I ride the skatepark with my 10 year old 3-4 times a week. Keep the cell phone out of your kids hands & take them outside. Great conversation guys.

Back in the day, bmx was everywhere. McDonald's commercials. Stu Thompson's bike in commercials. Team Murray bikes had commercials. Bmx was featured in some TV shows. Then the movie "Rad" was an underground success. Even later, Mirra and Nyquist. That's why every kid wanted to ride, and that's why every kid wanted bikes. That's what brought the Big Sponsorships. These days, there's a huge push to take those things away from kids. The big push is video games and iPhones now. Shoes and "the fit" is what the kids are into

There will only be ONE MIRACLE BOY,,, DAVE MIRRA! Dave Mirra is the Micheal Jordan of BMX! I would say Eddie Fiola, RL Ozborn and their peers are more like the Wilt Chamberland a and Bill Russell. Mirra might have not won the most Xgames but has some of the biggest airs ever, hardest tricks landed, sold a but ton of Haro bikes, and had two Video Games named after him. Thats HUGE in BMX HISTORY! When I think of the greatest of all time in their own sports its, Micheal Jordan, Dave Mirra, and Tony Hawk! I still ride Haro and anything Mirra today. R.I.P. Dave!

GT should have followed the retro market like Air Jordan did. All the heritage and lineage 20” bikes for every brand, Haro, Skyway, Redline sold out every year. GT should have made more retro models and accessories to flood the market a bit to get the name back out there. This would have helped sales because the older generation has money now as adults and would buy retro bikes which carries to the younger generation, their kids. Instead GT just slapped a different model sticker on the same boring frame. GT should have stuck with their roots and not follow the newer brands model.

About talking to the old people, the issue is especially the last 20 years is that everything changes so fast that what was the right way to do it five years ago is now the wrong way to do it. So half of it is just flipping a coin and going for shit, I guess.

I saw ad for Eastern big bmx bike and it said bike is not meant for jumping or tricks I was shocked and seeing that means I will never be eastern bike customer but might buy there big letter tires
Eastern is trying to get that SE "bikelife" money but their bikes just aren't as aesthetically appealing. I always see them at a steep discount and am like yeah that's the only price those will move at
I grew up in the 90's-00's, BMX was THE thing. When scooters came out, I loved them, I even had a sticker on my scooter that said "your bike sucks" and I loved telling them I was actually a BMXer. The best part about scooters is I could learn tail whips off curbs and sewer lids, no skatepark required at all to have fun on them, just go manual the school sidewalks and do techy stuff. A 3-stair was HUGE to drop. They are an awesome stepping stone into BMX. Also, with our economy going to crap (still), they are way cheaper, less maintenance, and don't require a truck to carry around like we did back in the day with like 8 bikes. Although, the fun level isn't comparable to hitting a nice dirt jump line (but these require humans to maintain and work on, also what we are losing). I hope we can have another push into outdoor sports and away from media. I've seriously considered buying a skatepark or something as soon as I can, just to be part of something near to my heart.
Tik tok is the wave. There needs to be tik tok young people to start riding bikes and make the kids think its cool again. As crazy as that sounds. I know BMX likes to hold onto those old gnarly days and riders like to be gatekeepers to keep the lame out of BMX. But its a new time. Every kid gets a bike at some point for xmas or their birthday. WHy arent they getting a real BMX bike? Because their kid isnt begging mom and dad for one because they dont know about it. Out of 1000 kids who get a bike at age 11-12, how many of them are buying one because Dennis Enarson rides it? BMX has a marketing problem more than anything.
I think them shoes sold because people love jordans and colecting the limited editions,not because bmx guys are buying his shoes. So his shoes probably has more to do with jordans branching out than nigel selling shoes from his bike skills or fame in bmx🤔
You can sum it all by saying there is not enough money in BMX. Sponsors are not getting the returns they once were. There are a lot of different reasons for that, but there are no riders popular enough to generate income for their sponsors. Back in the day you could go to a contest or a show and see 10, 15 or 20 riders but only 5 or 6 were better than the rest of the field and the sponsors could set up booths there to sell their products. That generates money, the contest generated TV viewers which generated more money. The Internet has diluted the riders as well as the marketing.
Failing because certain crews rewarded drinking underage and a bunch of dumb stuff. Companies aside... there has been alot of sour apples in the industry from regular riders to pros. Shaming people because of what they ride, what they ride or how they ride has always been an issue.
@ it’s sad but true , not in every city but I know in mine that was the issue and there’s only a few of us. Another huge issue is that it’s very very hard to get kids stoked on anything besides a keyboard or controller
The brands focused on bmx seem to be doing better than the brands doing all bikes. The few kids riding don't want to ride the same brand as their dads bodysuit road bike
Shaun White started his own brand called Whitespace. exactly what we saw with Dave Mirra and MirraCo ... Jay Miron and Macneil. win a bunch of hardware and start a brand.
Also just a content idea but I didn’t know the hate u radiated for bmx came from an injury not being able to ride. I’m Sorry to hear about that from watching this. But definitely understand your bitter outlook on riding now, where it was kinda lame before, and have way more respect for you. I will say it’s not all about crazy riding a comeback with fun jib riding (safe) would probably double you fallowing or a honest “really I’m over bmx cause I’m pissed I can’t go as hard as I used too vid” We can all get behind that. BMX Rules ...can't get down with the energy drinks or any of that stuff never could just because it tasted like garbage. But I always thought it was sick and is sick when they would throw money at BMX and do cool shit. Even when Nike Had the 6.0 program they did sick stuff like The Tunnel Jam, The Pool ect. I broke my neck in 2021 As soon as I felt like I could ride my bike again I was back on it. I just turned 40 today.. and I'll ride until I legit die.

How can BMX survive when kids aren’t allowed to build jumps anymore, Karen’s call the cops on everything these days, vacant land is fenced off , cities won’t let jumps or trails evolve on open areas, stuff continually gets torn down. A lot of bike parks can’t get past the city for approval they just want pickle ball courts. Grind blocks installed, security always watching, the list goes on. BMX is doomed. Don’t get me started on the price of parts and frames. That’s another issue.
now its the rider talent, its not the bike. the last riders i know who had a bike known just as much as the rider was dave mirra yellow and red blammo 97 and 98 and arron ross sunday signature color bikes
I'm a mid rider, from the midschool era. Same riding shoes for the last decade. I barely ride. Yet every single bmxer judges me at the park like I'm some asshole or something. They'll even say things like "we don't judge here" just to let you know you've been judged lol. I can't go to the skatepark without some young kid wanting to play a game of bike. When it's very clear I have a completely different riding style. I do abubacas so I'd win lol. I've barely been to a skatepark 20 times and it's usually uncomfortable if other riders are there. That's why I ride street, to stay away from other riders.
I also notice Phu has a lot of opinions on other people personally without having even met them. Like he said, people hate on others that are better than them… the shoe fits lol
Now see instead of asking me why I hated on him you’re assuming, i hated on him became he was a scooter rider and hated on all scooter riders because I felt like they were taking away sales and growth of bmx and also thought it looked super lame. But that was me just being ignorant and blind.

I think it would help if they went back to putting on live shows. For some reason they don’t want to invest in that.

How can BMX survive when kids aren’t allowed to build jumps anymore, Karen’s call the cops on everything these days, vacant land is fenced off , cities won’t let jumps or trails evolve on open areas, stuff continually gets torn down. A lot of bike parks can’t get past the city for approval they just want pickle ball courts. Grind blocks installed, security always watching, the list goes on. BMX is doomed. Don’t get me started on the price of parts and frames. That’s another issue.

I'm a mid rider, from the midschool era. Same riding shoes for the last decade. I barely ride. Yet every single bmxer judges me at the park like I'm some asshole or something. They'll even say things like "we don't judge here" just to let you know you've been judged lol. I can't go to the skatepark without some young kid wanting to play a game of bike. When it's very clear I have a completely different riding style. I do abubacas so I'd win lol.
I've barely been to a skatepark 20 times and it's usually uncomfortable if other riders are there. That's why I ride street, to stay away from other riders.

2 minutes in and i lost count how many times the dude said “cool” lol. A lot of the points talked about are similar to other sports industries say like…skateboarding, but those seem to be doing fine. Keep in mind Phu runs a brick and mortar shop so its biased in that perspective. Even the dude interviewing brings up contrary questions basically calling him out on some bs. Even Phu contradicts himself several time in this long format interview lol
