Last fall I found a sterling silver St. Christopher pendant around the site of an 1800s homestead that burnt years ago. My uncle was a very successful “water witch”, he dowsed for water all the time. He said it was nothing magical. His preferred method was using to copper rods that were bent at right angles in unequal halves. One bent in was for the grip, the other were antennae. He held them very loosely. He said he’d just ask himself if there was water there and if so they’d cross. If not they wouldn’t. He then would ask is it 10ft? 20? And so on until he got the depth. He also said the answers were consistently off by a certain amount, so he’d know he’d have to dig a little further than the answer given. Seemed to work for him.
